Teams can't use the TE on Defense like they do on O because these big guys who can run still can't turn their hips fast enough to compensate for the new rules that prohibit hand contact beyond 5 yards.

TE and WR are becoming bigger and taller, CB and safties will become quicker and shorter. The advantage is in the passing game and it will continue until they allow more hand checking by the defensive backfield.

I actually like this idea quite a bit. Upon reading it, it almost seems like a no-brainer. Defenses are going to have to adjust, personnel wise, to the new NFL. Look no further than the 2 teams in the Super Bowl, the Pats and the Giants. We have one team with one of the worst defenses in the NFL and the other with the worst rushing game. Who would've thought we'd see the day?

Don't get me wrong, a lot of this has to do with pass-friendly rule changes, but these hybrid TE's are definitely exacerbating the problem.

At first thought, having a hybrid safety / linebacker may hurt a team's ability to stop the rush, but maybe not. If you're playing an offense with one of these TE's, chances are, the TE isn't much of a run-blocker anyway, so theoretically, it shouldn't hurt the defense much.

The player that came to mind was Urlacher, when he was coming out of college. While at New Mexico St., Urlacher played linebacker and safety, and also returned punts from time to time. Obviously, he put on a considerable amount of weight when entered the NFL, but he could have been ideal for covering these hybrid TE's, had he been groomed to do so.

Ftr I don't think you can say across the board that this new type of TE is generally or in most cases bad at run blocking.

Two things. Fatcessa made this point on his show, and called it Urlacher, but 20 pounds lighter.

The player in question is Maybin, being taught to cover, and play the traditional SS position. Except on any given down he comes at the QB, like Rex already does with Dbs

He should have two tasks cover the TE but pass him off and become a free rusher

He could be a 20 sack guy in that role

Run blocking doesn't matter see above the prototype is already on the roster. N a running play he's used t taking n a guy much bigger than Gronkowski

Urlacher is to heavy. Maybin is the hysical prototype for the player.

It's a question of redefining th SS position to a tweener

Yeah, so long as the Jet CS has the right kind of pixie dust to sprinkle on him, this is already a done deal.
