I agree that 4 reps on the bench is terrible, but its not that important. The guy is a ball hawk and a football player and ran a good 40 time today (4.4) He will be gone in the 3rd round
His stock is not dropping. 4 reps, means zilch, for a CB once you see his production on the field. And he was pretty good on the field today. 3rd maybe 4th.
Maybe. Teams might be put off by the relapse and wait it put so there's less money involved. But third isn't out of the question. Remember Jason Ferguson slid way down, over the exact same issue. 7th round iircc
And in 1995 sapp slid down due to the fear of him having a farm of the joyous green plants down there in Florida. We want sapp!!
Bad Showing? What combine were you watching? The guy ran a 4.4 in the 40. Yes he had a bad bench press at 4 reps but Fred Smoot only pressed 1 rep and has been in the league 10 years. Bench press doesnt show heart. I the drills Mathieu and quick feet and smooth hips plus he was able to catch passes that seems pretty darn good for a guy out of football for a year.He can get stronger in the gym thats nothing. His stock hasnt dropped a bit
I agree with you 100%. It may be that posters are hoping that his stock drops so that we can pick him up as a UDFA
It would be nice if we could get him as low as possible but somebody will gamble on him and I hope its us that does so.... with the Revis situation looks like they might trade him
I agree. I wouldn't go at 39, unless we could trade Revis for a second or better. But.. Consider.. If we got Jordan at 9, who started out as a TE, and can cover the slot, than Mathieu, who will Eat Welkers lunch... What is that worth?
if you read what i wrote, before he ran, the concensus was that he wasnt in shape and the 40 time PROJECTED was gonna be mid 4.5 range. i wrote that before he ran. he proved me and all analysts wrong.
Yeah, one game against the best team in a long time in the brightest spotlight as a true sophomore in which he played 1 on 1 man coverage a lot on a defense that was struggling should determine that. Why don't you look at his other 25 or so games? The kid can play. He's not a shutdown corner and never will be, but he can play.
I grabbed him near the end of the third in the draft forums three round mock before the combine ... For the pats  I would do it all over again but expect him to be gone even earlier after that showing. He was always seen as quick and explosive more than track fast. The 40 helped ease some of those fears. He also showed great fluidity it the position drills. He is most likely a nickel corner/special teams play at the next level, but with the proliferation of the 3 wideout sets a good nickel can be valuable. Someone will jump on his talent despite the off-field issues.
That's the dilemma...he'll be there at 39. But someone at the bottom of the second or top of the third might get there first... The thing is, you need a guy like that, when you play NE twice a year. That's why a deal with San Fran for their first, chief second, would free up the 39 for a reach.
I really don't foresee San Fran giving up the much for Revis, who would likely be a rental for them. They are going to need a ton for cap space for thier own guys soon enough.
Mathieu's can be a star in this league at FS but anything else i see him as a backup/Package player. Too small to ever be left on the outsides and not big enough for SS but an excellent playmaker which is a god given talent that you cannot teach and has great instincts and is always around the ball trying to make plays. In essence he is a troy polamulu in terms of his playmaking and being around the ball alot and Bob Sanders in terms of how aggressive he is in the run game despite being undersized. Something about this kid is special, has that "it" factor that makes me feel he is destined for stardom. Low risk as a 4th-5th rounder but high reward if he is put into the right position(FS) and if he is allowed to develop and adapt to that position which he has familiarity with, he can be a star. But that is if everything falls into place with him and he stops puffing them cali trees. I wouldn't mind the Mathieu's project if we have patience on the coaching staff and let him get opportunities to play but if we just draft him for headlines and do what we did to Tebow, then hell naw.
