So. You think Revis is worth 13 plus million a year? ( ESPN says 16) http://forums.theganggreen.com/showpost.php?p=2714010&postcount=976 Brains. And if you want to be a typing teacher, more power to you, but since you are utterly devoid of logic, (logiculack ???) I'd suggest you at least grasp relative facts rather than critique my typing. Douche.
I'm not arguing to keep revis. I'm saying that using a 2nd on Mathieu with the pick you gain would be a terrible idea
Revis is def worth 13 million a year. When it comes to 15-16 mil I think it might be a little high, but he is one of the best defensive players in the NFL and one of the best of all time to ever play CB. Shopping him might be a good move, but its tough to give up a player like that without guaranteeing you get a playmaker on offense at the very least, preferably a QB that can be a difference maker.
I like Wilson and all, but some of you guys are going you be calling for his and Cromartie's head when they allow a couple big plays. Especially with huge question marks at the safety positions.
You could be 100 pct correct there. I think we need to hear more. Ths interview and the willing to trade news, are far too coincidental.
My issue isn't with trading Revis. I think we have no real choice in the matter. Reading comprehension skills are not your strong suit either, obviously - ironic that you accuse me of it. I said that you make all sorts of excuses for Sanchez, but you're willing to trade our best player under the premise that we can replace him with a guy who projects to be out of the league within a year or two for violating the league's substance abuse policy. That's not quite the same thing as saying you simply want to trade our best player.
In what twisted world of logic is that point made? There are corners making $10M all over the league, so logic would dictate that the BEST of them would be worth more. If he's not worth $15M, he's certainly worth more than $10M and no question worth more than your ridiculous claim of $6M "tops". And watch your mouth with calling me a douche - I didn't insult you personally, I cracked a joke about your typing errors.
Even I can agree with you on this one, Broom. 6 million is ridiculous, although I do think corners in general are over paid. Think about it the best WRs in league make around 9-11 million a year. Why should the guy that guards them make more? The only time they should is if they are like Revis and completely shut down those 11 million dollar investments. Paying them 15-16 million for nullifying an 11 million at most guy still seems like too much. That's why I feel the 11-12 million dollar range is perfect. A sad realization that I just made, and now I think trading Revis might be inevitable. Cromartie makes around 8 a year which is perfect. He doesn't always shut down like Revis, but he plays solid.
Part of that pass defense ranking also had to do with how bad the run defense has been the last two years and the fact that teams often had leads on the Jets and ran the ball to kill clock. The Jets had the 3rd most rush/running attempts against their defense in the league. They were also one of the least thrown against defense, averaging 30.9 pass attempts against their defense, which was only higher than two teams - Philly and KC. Also, a team like New England gives up a lot of garbage yardage when they're up by 20+ points in some games by playing bend but don't break. ESPN NY Blog: Rich Cimini - A Top Five Defense? Not This Year The Jets were 19th in total defense and 7th in pass defense going into the Arizona game. Those horrific QB's they played down the stretched skewed the stats big time for total defense to jump up to 8th in the league, and definitely helped the pass defense jump up to 2nd. Lindley, Henne, Locker, Rivers, Fitzpatrick. Rivers is the only top 15 QB on that list, and he's had two down years in a row. I'm not saying the pass defense sucked this year - I thought it was pretty damn good all things considered (no Revis, no pass rush). But I just disagree with the standard line some fans are saying of "we finished 2nd in pass defense without Revis, we don't need him." That's asinine in my opinion. I think Revis is the most valuable defensive player in the league with the way he can single cover anyone and take them out of the game. It allows Rex to get more creative and aggressive on D. It allows you to play more exotic coverages. It allows you to blitz more often and more effectively. It's easier to double team other weapons when you know Revis can play without safety help most of the time. I'd personally rather pay Revis $12-15 million per year and trade Cromartie. I think Revis is twice the player Cromartie is, and I'm a Cro fan, but I don't think he will ever have a year like he did this year again. Plus he's not nearly as versatile as Revis. Revis is excellent on the outside, but if you needed him to, he could probably move inside and shadow Welker all game. Cromartie is great at running vertically down the field with guys, but he gets beat by quick guys who run crisp routes because of his long legs and tighter hips. Sell high on his great season and get some assets for him if you're that cap strapped. It's much easier to find a replacement for Cro than it is to find a replacement for Revis IMO. Either way, regardless of who goes between Revis and Cro, I don't want Kyle Wilson as my #2 CB. He absolutely must be upgraded if one of Revis/Cro is traded. I can't take another year of him being completely burned and the QB just over throwing his receiver and then seeing Kyle Wilson do the Dikembe Mutumbo finger wave like he made such a great play I'm not as sold on his tackling as you are. I think too often he just throws his shoulder at a guys legs and doesn't wrap up too well, shies away from contact too much for my liking. And hasn't shown really anything in the return game either. As I said above, if someone needs to be traded, I'd rather trade Cromartie. I've been a big fan of Cro since his Chargers days, but Revis is twice the player he is, and Cro's value is probably at an all time high after the season he had. And I can't see him having a season like this again to be quite honest. I just don't want to end up with Kyle Wilson as our #2 CB again. If one of Cro/Revis gets traded, I hope we upgrade the #2 spot and push Wilson to nickelback. After 3 years of seeing him, I just don't think he's a quality starter in this league. Mathieu at FS is an interesting thought. He definitely has the playmaking skills to play the position. You'd just have to worry about his size at 5'9, he'd probably struggle to tackle at the NFL level and when asked to cover a TE he'd be at a major disadvantage. But then again, Earl Thomas has come in as an undersize safety and been pretty damn good. For me, I'd start Mathieu out in the slot and go from there. Good nickelbacks are hard to find, and I think Mathieu has the ability to be a very good one. If he doesn't cut it there, then I'd trying kicking him over to safety like you said.
With the salary cap any player making over 10mil is ridiculous. Revis is worth 6mil. Sanchez is worth about $3.50. Damn Lochness Monster!!!
Apologies. However, 10 percent of the cap spent that far from the ball, when maybe 3 teams a year have a real threat on a 60 percent play.... Now...given that you need to beat Brady to welker two times a year Revis could grab a little extra coin, but at the end of the day the position just doesn't merit more than that. You build teams from the ball....out.
I hate when people try to falsely state that the weak run D is the reason for the strong pass D. Not even close. You still have to throw the ball. Look at the stats that matter like OVERALL D, pass % completed against, and opponent QB rating. On average opponent QBs had a 78.2 rating(7th) and 53.8 completion percentage(2nd). To put that in perspective Sanchez career numbers are 55.1 comp%, and 71.7 QB rating. So yeah, our defense makes opposing QBs play like Sanchez, basically bottom of the league QB #s, WITHOUT REVIS. If it were just the weak rushing defense, QBs would still have decent ratings but they do not. It definitely is because of Wilson and Cromartie both elevating their games. 2011 WITH REVIS: Comp% 54.2(5th), QB rating 69.6 (3rd). So we lose an all pro future hall of famer and our comp% against gets slightly better and QB rating against gets slightly worse. 2010 Revis out for about half the year: comp% 50.7 (1st), rating 77.1 (6th) 2009 No Cromartie: comp% 51.7 (1st), rating 58.8 (1st) Revis was amazing in 2009, but the way things are playing out, the more and more I look at these things, the more likely Revis is traded. Shame because I really like the guy, and think he's a good leader and great athlete. He's just not worth 12-15 million a year when his absence doesn't change our stats all that much in the big picture. I'm pretty sure Idzik will come to the same conclusion.
Revis is worth $6 mil? Why don't we just get rid of every single professional football player and sign CFL players to bare minimum contracts. You know, since no other position other than QB is important.
He touches the ball every offensive snap. When he plays well, he keeps our defense off the field. That is not an endorsement of his play, it's an observation. Now, the second level.... As I've said ad nauseum...there are two games this past season, that show what his upside is. Week-1' week 10, buffalo, St Louis.... His issues are coachable, and he hasn't had shit for a coach in four years, after having one year as a starter in college. My opinion is, given MMs proven track record the jury is out for one more season. That's not to excuse crappy play, but in addition to Sparano, this year....you have to factor in Gilyard, Gates, and Reuland, and no Keller,Holmes, and Hill....which is why the week one game matters. To answer your question, right now he's overpaid....
A CB is a WR that can't catch. It's a position that asks a player to defend a play that is already a 60 pct play. You build a team from the ball out.
I don't think the kid has a 'huge drug problem' off the field. He likes to puff a little refer. Whoopee. Too bad he can't get a medical wavier like the players who snort a few lines of Aderall just before kick off.
Every team in the History of the NFL that has won a SB has done so without a single player named Darrell Revis, Antonio Cromartie, or Kyle Wilson. And it's about to happen again. Yes, it can be done.
