Hey man, stats don't lie, just ask ESPN. A wise man once said that yardage allowed is far more important a gauge of defensive proficiency than points against.
But points following conceded yards late in the game are not as indicative of the quality of the d Jets gave up a TD off a short field following a turn-over; and the TD itself was propelled by a blatant hold (which I'm surprised we haven't heard more about), along with a late game TD ( which I'll admit I wasn't pleased about, but was off a relaxed D for sure).
I think its a positive. It means this game wasn't the ceiling of what the Jets are capable of doing. If they improve their discipline in the coming weeks then the Jets will be by far the most underrated team in the NFL.
I don't want to be overly negative but there's a flip side to that and we don't play the Raiders every week. Hopefully we can clean things up and continue to do well in areas we did well Sunday. I saw a lot of very positive things, especially on offense. Our running attack could keep opposing DC's up at night this year which bodes well for the passing attack.
True. We don't play the Raiders every week. But... Compare this opening day game to last season against Revis and the Bucs. We won that game like 18-17 on that personal foul penalty called on the Bucs on our last series. We won the game but we all knew we shouldn't have, and we had a very bad feeling heading into the rest of the regular season. Fast forward to 2014. Again we barely won the game, but this time we dominated every facet. We have things in OUR CONTROL we can fix and be a really dominant team. While both games gave us a win, 2014 gave us something 2013 didn't. Legitimate hope.
I don't think there's any question that this team is more talented and has more potential than the 2013 team.
I think the defense is about the same, the offense has more weapons, and we still have the Folk! the biggest things will be staying healthy, and Geno taking the next step. If those 2 things happen, we should see an overall higher quality of play out on the field.
I said take it as you will, I'm not proclaiming a SB appearance. It's just a good sign that we were able to put up some numbers like this vs a team like the Raiders.
By the way, I missed the first couple minutes of the game on Sunday, who was the WR listed as starting other than Decker? Was it Kerley like the preseason?
I agree, but the fact remains that, of the two, yards allowed is a far better indicator of defensive proficiency than points allowed is. The fact that they count special teams and defensive points in that statistic is the overriding problem. If your quarterback throws three pick 6s in a game, that is 21 points added to your points against statistic. A kickoff returned for a TD . . . another 7. etc. etc.
