Ravens top 5 recievers Boldin Smith Rice Dickson Pitta Jets top 5 Keller Holmes Plax Tomlinson Kerley (only had 300 yards) Maybe its me but I would take the 5 up top 100/100 times id take the guys on the Ravens. Mark Sanchez sacked the 5th MOST in the league Joe Flacco 15th Ravens YPC #12 Jets YPC tied for #29 Obviously theres many factors contributing to YPC and sacks allowed, but it makes me think theres a very good chance that our Olines arent about equal. And yes Flaccos #s were slightly slightly barely better, even though his #1 receiving target was... his halfback who had 50% more receptions than their 2nd leading receiver.
Compare Sanchez's first 13 games with all the other comparisons you are making and Im sure you'll feel a little different. Then factor in our OC who threw the ball when they could run, and who ran the ball when they could pass, not to mention he had no idea how to force the safeties to stay away from LoS. Then add the inconsistent play of our RT, and the injuries to our C and LG and he still had a good start to the season until week 15. Don't just look at a few stats and tell me he was terrible. You sound a lot like a Dolphin fan that are fascinated with stats and stats alone.
I'm actually using statistics that mean something, though. And I didn't say that Sanchez didn't have excuses. There were injuries, there were others playing poorly, and there was a shit scheme. I said he was below average. Sanchez defenders want to see how he performs in a HISTORIC once-a-decade scenario in which both the defense and running games perform at elite league-leading levels. The Steel Curtain in the '70s, '85 Bears, 2000 Ravens. We actually had something decently close to that in '09 and '10, and that's why we went to two AFC Championships. In fact, it illustrates the biggest problem with Sanchez, he can't handle adversity. Regardless of how often he was under pressure, which was actually around the league average, when he was, he was absolutely terrible at dealing with it. 30.8% completion, 3.1 yards per attempt... and those were when he actually got throws off. There is no measurable way other than the ol' "I watched him and he was good" that you can tell me that Sanchez was anything better than "below-average" in 2011. Even I agree to let you omit the last 3 games, which to me is absurd, crossing out the 3 most important games of the year, then his numbers APPROACH average. That's it. You guys want a surrounding team so good that average can win a Super Bowl, rather than expecting more. All that said, I expect he will be better. Not in totals, but in efficiency. It's a step.
Flacco took 8 less sacks in 18 fewer possessions. The sack rates are close enough that it's just as easy to claim QB error than it is OL error. http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/ol As I've alluded to earlier/elsewhere, the surface numbers lie. The Jets were the worst open field rushing team in the league, Baltimore was 5th best. Adjusting YPC to take out the excess yards big plays that backs have to earn themselves, the 'adjusted line yards' favor Baltimore by a whopping .02 YPC. The Jets were actually the superior short yardage rushing team and were stuffed at the line slightly less often.
Mantanna: I have to say you made a number of great posts in this thread. Some of the best I have ever seen on this site. Using data, statistics, ranking and actual analysis oh my. Whether I agree or disagree with your posts I truly respect the time, effort and thought you put into these posts along with the professional way you presented your views. Very well done. Posts like yours give me hope that there is actually intelligent life on the internet. Great job again.
Saying "A bad Bleacher Report" column is too repetitive... That's like saying shitty crap or crappy shit. Almost everything on B.R. is B.S.
I didn't read the thread but what were we ranked last year? I'm assuming not 30 or below so that means our offense got worse. We lost LT which could do that. We lost Plax which might hurt the RZ but we got Tebow which might counter that. We lost Schotty. I don't see how we end up at 30 unless we have major injuries. I think Sparano will open up the offense more than Schotty. We aren't going to be throwing up 30ppg but I think the offense will be "good enough" and possibly be able to carry the team for a game or two
Flacco took 8 less sacks, but had only 1 less pass attempt than sanchez Which is a pretty significant difference imo The http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/ol Suggests our adjusted sack rate was 6.7% vs 5.9% for Flacco (which is a decent amount) And the thing that the stats dont keep in mind is that Flacco threw quite a few more deep balls than Sanchez last year, which would presumably inflate his sack #s further (gives defenders longer to hit him)
Really? They had Bryant Mckinney, who in his prime was mediocre at best, at one of their OT positions, and Michael Oher struggled at the other. The Ravens OL was NOT better than the Jets OL that had 3 Pro Bowlers on it. The Ravens OL didn't give "Flacco a distinct advantage over Sanchez", Flacco gave himself a distinct advantage because he can read defenses and Sanchez can't. Most of Sanchez's faults -- holding the ball too long, throwing behind receivers, missing on timing patterns, not throwing down field enough, relying on check-downs too much, etc -- stem from his inability to recognize and process what he sees on the field before and after the snap of the ball.
It really is pretty bad, just a couple of guys who like football and started posting about it. I do not think the Jets O will be very good, but really, for the Jets to be good, they need top 3 defense and ground and pound, winning games 13-7, 17-10...that sort of thing. This team will not win many shootouts. Unless all of a sudden Sanchez has a Drew Brees like turnaround.
Ah life is good. I didn't even realize we had this feature until the other day! Putting the Jets offense at #30 is just as ridiculous as putting them at #3. Last year we had everything against us, and most of it has been fixed. RT is still a concern, but no reason to think it'll be worse than last year. It's not going to happen. Sanchez coming off a "bad" year where he had the 5th most TDs in the NFL. LOLz, because we all know that when a QB has a bad year in TOs, they automatically keep getting worse. Love the logic of Jets fans. Only a darksider would agree with a bleacher report article. That's the ultimate in grasping for straws.
I appreciate it. I'll build up the entire board's IQ myself if I have to. --- Barcs, the BR article actually ended up being pretty irrelevant to the conversation. The easiest way to explain Sanchez's high touchdown count being the anomaly to all the other negative stats is that Schotty continuously called passing plays in goal line situations. Our team touchdown total wasn't all that high, but a high ratio of them were via the air (a very high ratio including Mark's legs). Don't get me wrong, red zone and goal line performance is very important, but we didn't get there nearly often enough.
So the Colts and the Skins will also be better then us. OH please. Lets just wait for some preseason games,,, See what we have and take it from there. More will get cut from other teams.. Im not in a panic mode.
