The real issue is that instead of having a killer instinct this team has developed a victim instinct. I've seen this on Jets teams before and it almost always turns ugly when November and December roll around.

If we lose to Jacksonville on Sunday we might win only 5 or 6 games this year. Ryan needs to fix this now or it is going to get ugly in a hurry.

If this team losses to Jax coming off a bye at home put a fork in them. This should be an outright blowout.

What you've seen is poor coaching and a lack of talent, in myriad combinations. Don't lay it on instinct.

Good points. I'm excited to see what team come out of the gate after the bye. Is it the lose stupidly to Miami and Buffalo,or defeat NE team? Right now i;m still in the Yankees won the series so every thing else is gravy mind set. But i'm sure it'll change tomorrow.

I agree. We will learn a lot about our players and coaching staff tomorrow. No more excuses, as for the first time this year, this is a game we cannot lose if we hope to make anything of our season this year.

It is only one game. Forget about it. If the win they will be alright. If the lose. Forget about it.

    Lack of talent?

This team has more talent/potential than I've seen in a while

There are 5 potential Pro Bowl players on this team
    Mangold
    Ferguson
    Jones
    Harris
    Revis

There are two Pro Bowl players on IR who will be back next year:

    Jenkins
    Washington

There are talented players at other positions:

    Cotchery
    Edwards
    Pace
    Scott

There are some good young talented players:

    Green
    Keller
    Sanchez

    And some solid starters:

    Faneca
    Moore
    Lowery
    Leonard
    Strickland
    Sheppard

There are less weaknesses in this team than we've had in a lonnnnng time

The Jets need some DL and a pass rushing OLB. The other need is a RT and some OL depth to take the place of Faneca as he ages. That's about it.

And if you can't see the massive improvement in the defense this year over year's past, you need to take Football 101. For years we have watched teams march up and down the field on the Jets defense, seen teams run the ball at will, seen the bend and then break defense. A three and out was as common as a full moon. The defense has been lights out in preventing points and getting off the field this year. This is a completely different Jets defense and it will get better as the talent at DL and OLB are addressed in the offseason and Jenkins comes back.

You have to look at the way a team loses and not just the losses to see how a team is developing. While the losses to the Bills and Dolphins have been painful, keep in mind that one play in each of the three games turns those losses into wins. I would much rather my team loses on the last play of a game, by having the rookie QB throw too much in a game the running game and defense were controlling, and by giving up two kickoff returns than by having a team gain 200 yards rushing or throw for 350 yards or by shutting down the offense. This team is moving the ball and stopping the other team. When that happens, the wins will come. Maybe not this year, but next year and the year after as Sanchez matures.

Look at the overall performance of the team and not just the record and this a good team that will get better with maturity and some defensive front seven additions.

What we're going to see today is whether or not Ryan is a 2 year and out proposition, taking Tannenbaum with him on the way out the door.

The Jets have been miserable over the last 5 games, dominating a terrible organization and losing to every other team in their path including two really poor organizations at this point. A loss today would make them 1-5 over the last 6 with only one likely playoff team in the mix. This despite being on paper a fairly talented team.

I think it is an incredible overstatement to say that today's game is the litmus test for Ryan. Where is this coming from? The Jets have not been miserable over the past 6 games. They had a defensive melt down (the first and only one in 8 games ) against Miami and the offense and Sanchez played well enough to that it came down to one play. They dominated Buffalo and lost because the OC wasn't smart enough to take the game out of Sanchez's hands when it was already won and that game came down to one or two play. They completely dominated Miami, holding them to 100 yards of offense, but gave up three fluke TDs and that game came down to one play.

Bad teams or poorly coached teams don't run all over other teams or hold them completely in check defensively. It is GOOD coaching when your game plan works and your offense moves the ball and your defense doesn't permit the other team to move the ball.

This team has played very well this year - better than expected. Ryan has done a good job and will be back next year no matter what.

Last year was a bad year compared to this year because it was a one year shot that failed and the future of the team was murky - no QB, a mediocre defense that got worse, etc.

This team is on its way. Why can't you see that? When a team dominates its opponents in 6 of 8 games, it is playing well. Football is a funny game in that you can lose games like the Miami game, but if that game showed anything it was how far this team has come offensively and defensively. We've seen more three and outs this year than in the past 4-5 years combined. We've not seen game after game of long drives against a defense that couldn't get off the field. We've seen an obvious upgrade in talent and a potential franchise QB brought to the franchise. Now I know this is hard to accept, but show a little patience. The feeling around this team is 180 degrees away from where it was at the end of the end of last season.

You people sound like a bunch of Yankee fans, not a fan base that has been waiting for a winner.

I like the attitude Ryan has brought to this team. I like what I am seeing on the field - an offensive line that is supporting a power running game plus an aggressive defense.

And let's not forget that the Jets best offensive and defensive players are out with injuries.

Good post. I like the roster too, although we do need depth at a number of positions. I was referring to the statement that the missing "killer instinct" is something we've seen in the past.

Still and all, with such talent on the roster, today, the lack of results speaks fairly poorly of the coaching staff, doesn't it?

Take a look at the Saints 2008 season. They lost 5-6 games in last minute gut wrenching fashion. I'm not saying the Jets will be 8-0 at this point next year, but sometimes in the NFL the difference between winning and losing is razor thin. The Jets are an improved team over last year's team and the almost unwatchable uninspired losses at the end of the year or the complete ineptitude of 2007.

I never said Ryan wasn't going to be back next year. I said if the Jets collapse he's gone after 2010 and that's a fact.

Everybody posting positive things in this thread just imagine ahead about 7 hours to what you'll be feeling like if a .500 Jacksonville team that has been up and down this year but has won 4 out of the last 6 manages to upset the Jets making them 1-5 in their last 6.

The facts are that this team keeps finding ways to lose games it has no business losing. Whether that's on the defensive side, the offensive side or even (unbelievably) special teams, this team will lose the game late if any opportunity to do so presents itself. The only game they've won since September was a game in which the other team handed us 3 TD's early and basically gave up.

    Think about it.

    Rookie QB...2 games. (N.O., Buffalo)

Rookie H.C. on Game (Mia, @ NY)

The question is, will those things change for the better or not.

From what we've seen so far, Sanchez will get better....I think Rex will get his legs under him as well.
