If Revis leaves and gets a long term deal with some other team for 15m per, I won't mutiny even if we squander the picks. The one thing that will drive me nuts will be if he signs for 9-12m per and we could have had them at the price, but Woody had a hard on to get rid of him.
A trade of Revis doesn't just bring value in the players drafted, but in the players brought in with the money that would have been spent locking him up. It's extremely unlikely that any player drafted with a pick acquired in a trade for Revis will be nearly as good as Revis, even if we had the #1 overall. Since I don't think we even get a first round pick for him, the odds are even lower. But if they draft a good starter and bring two or three impact players with the saved money, that's a good trade.
Yeah I mean if he signs for signficantly less per year than he's asking I won't be happy either and at that point the pressure would be on all of those picks.
What the Jets need right now is some lift and upside in the mix. Whatever else Revis represents it's not lift and upside over the status quo. The Jets need to get dramatically better at a half dozen positions at least, many of them of much more impact than CB. Effectively the Jets need to get out from under the downside of the player acquisition strategy of the last 6 years. They did a good job of holding off the negative effects of the draft-pick bundling strategy until 2011. Then the cap and the aging talent base began to snowball on them. They need to reverse the talent decline in a cap tight environment and the only way to do that is to make a lot picks in the draft over the next few years and then hope they work out. The days of bringing in a 28 year old free agent to plug a hole are over for now. There are too many holes and not enough cap space to do that with. Revis, BTW, is effectively that 28 year old free agent who eats up too much cap to be an option for the Jets right now. It sucks but it is what it is.
It is all about the picks. If we get good players that have pro bowl potential great trade. We get busts or just average players bad trade.
Wow...finally get in to work (sorry, on west coast) and there is fresh news!!! My take on the reports... 1) If that is the compensation (a 1 plus more) then the 49ers are out... 2) ...Unless the more interesting part of the report is true that the team trading for him would also be extending him... 3) ...but I don't think the Niners can do that unless he agrees to far less than he's been asking for... 4) ...but if that were the case he wouldn't be on the block. My point all along has been that the 49ers won't give up alot of picks for a rental. That dynamic changes tho if there is a workable contract extension in place. Now the reports are coming fast and furious that the 49ers are not in this one. Interesting....ya never know what to believe this time of year. We'll just have to see.
Since it's the Jets what will probably happen is they won't trade him. Revis won't play until Week 9. Will showcase himself then take off in FA. Gets get compensatory 3rd and end up in the dust. But we'll see. If he isn't traded by or on draft day I'm going to be extremely nervous.
Barrows is 49ers beat writer.... Matt Barrows @mattbarrows Told that the #49ers haven't even discussed a trade for Darrelle Revis with the Jets. Team was preoccupied with other trade matters.
Seems like a perfect fit. I would be surprised if there weren't some discussion (perhaps informal) at this point.
Well Barrows is REALLY, REALLY good (He and Matt Maiocco are the best...they cover only the 49ers) so I believe he got that from a good source... ...but it could still be the 49ers pushing their agenda.
where there's smoke there's fire. Are the Niners on the brink of trading for Revis? Who knows. But they have absolutely discussed it.
If there aren't any other suitors the 49ers can really nail Idzik's balls to the wall by dragging this thing out. The Jets will want to move Revis as soon as they can, and it seems they're alienating him further and further as each day passes. The 49ers really don't have to rush and can apply pressure to Idzik and Revis to lower the terms of the deal as long as no other team is willing to step up and make a trade. I think that is the reason for the competing stories we've been seeing today. The claim that multiple teams are interested leaked through NY newspapers, while the 49ers are leaking that they're not interested through their reporters.
if there was any inclination he would sign and honor the entire length of a 5-6 year deal at 9-12 per i think they would keep him.but the probability that he takes that deal now and holds out in 2 years after he has returned to form and more players are making more than that are too high. the hold out factor is very high in the decision to move him
Wow. Dunno. I've been looking at this as a rental all along. If there is a contract this is a different conversation. I'd say probably #31 or #34 (not both) and a later pick or a conditional 2014 pick. It won't be 2 ones. Having said that...if there IS a contract I don't think this is the 49ers on the other end of the phone. They can't afford his asking price.
other rumored team is the Falcons and their beat writer is saying not so fast https://twitter.com/AJCFalcons/status/309328157398401024 Revis Island is not relocating to Lake Lanier. #Falcons addressing their own free agents, prepping for the draft. http://shar.es/jQmcg
