Initially I wasn't sold on Star. I think if he's there you have to take him. I think it makes the Jet's a 4-3 team. Star and Mo inside, Coples and Macnytyre outside. Mac was the Jets best outside pass rusher. I like Ertz. If the Jet's would pull this draft off I'd be very happy
We can't keep doing the same formula every year of drafting defense. We need impact on the offensive side of the ball. A defensive pick just throws the towel on this season in regard to scoring.
You have to draft the value that's there. If Star Lotulelei gets down to the 9 the odds are very good that he's the most value available on the pick. Trading down and taking Tavon Austin later on is certainly an option but taking Austin on the 9 is not. Taking a guard on the 9 is not. Taking one of the other WR's on the 9 is just not a real option unless the Jets have decided to give away value on the pick because they need something, which is invariably a bad move. Seriously, if the Jets want an offensive player on the 9 they can either make a reach for a QB, which at least has a huge return if they guess right, or they can take Lane Johnson there and move Austin Howard inside to RG. There just aren't a lot of top 10 prospects on offense in this draft. You have the 3 tackles in Joeckel, Fisher and Johnson. You maybe have a QB in Geno Smith. That's it. A guard in the top 10 is a joke pick. The position is not a keystone, it's a supporting position. For whatever reason the value in the draft this year is concentrated in the tackles on both sides of the ball and in the defensive ends and outside linebackers. There's one cornerback breaking up that run of talent and maybe one quarterback. In most years there's at least one top 10 quarterback and often two as well as a wide receiver and often a running back. This year those guys just aren't there. It's a tackle and pass rush year. That's just what it is.
I wouldn't hate the pick but I would be disappointed if the Jets took Star over a Jones or Jordan (if available). I'd rather have Kelce over Ertz.
can someone explain why jarvis jones has fell so much? like i understand he ran poorly, but jeez mocks now have him going pretty fricken low in the first round and some even in the second round. the tape speaks for itself, he's extremely talented
Because when you're an outside linebacker being considered in the top half of the 1st round, it's hard to have a 4.9 40 at 240 pounds. He may have elite production, but the drills put him at undrafted athleticism.
I'm not sure he's fallen all that much. He always had the health question mark going against him. Without that he would have been seen as a clear top 5 or 6 player in this draft. The workout issues are real and they will definitely drop a player's stock a bit. I'm not sure Jones has been hit hard by them though. He was already being projected as a middle of the 1st round type guy due to the health questions. I don't know that the slow 40's have actually sunk in yet or made much of an impact. It looks like Jones is going to go somewhere between 9 and 17 at this point. The Jets are probably the first potential landing spot and the Steelers look like a place the fall could end if it happens. If everybody backs off of him due to the health and workout issues it is conceivable that he will drop below Alec Ogletree and wind up in the top third of the second round. This would be like Courtney Upshaw's fall last year with Dont'a Hightower taken before him despite the initial ranking that had Upshaw much higher. My own feeling is that Jones is likely the real deal and is probably going to be a great player in the NFL if the injury issues don't KO him. I see the Steelers as the single most likely landing spot at this point.
