Yeah, that was pretty bad. I knew they would get the first down, but I didn't think it would be on one play
I disagree that this has been a recent problem. It was a problem earlier in the season, and it was corrected. the DB musical chairs continues on and in this defense it is imperative to have good communication and consistency in the secondary. Our defense played lights out vs Miami, hopefully we get him back for Da Bears.
The Jets offense let the Steelers back in the game. The time management and playcalling at the end of the game was bad. 2nd and 5 when pittsburgh hasnt stopped the run they pass stops the clock getting tackled out of bounds
That is if U are saying that Henne & Cutler are on the same level as QBs. The problem for our D is the PR plain & simple. Why not play GM for a second or 2 & if you were what round draft choice would you give up for DeVito or Pouhla or Ellis? How about Bryan Thomas or Pace also :jets:
When we have a top 5 defense, 3rd going into yesterday Rex expects his D to make the stop. The defense allowed 2 long drives so in no way is it on the offense. I think they should have ran the ball to get it down to the 2 minute warning but we didn't, we were being aggressive. The loss of E. Smith can not be overlooked so easily.
I think the relative qualities of the opponents had more to do with the differences in the Miami and Pitt games. While Pitt has struggled of late, they do have a quality Qb, and he and they made plays. Miami on the other hand could only score 14 against Buffalo, and is now out of the playoff hunt. Henne is a bottom tier starter, despite past success against the Jets. I of course think the Jets D played well against Miami, but Miami just plain is not that good on O.
One of the things that made me sit up last night was the amount of times we blitzed outside of the tackles and all too often over pursued. Love to see more inside blitzes which seem to work alot better for us. 3rd downs this season have been one of our biggest let downs IMO, especially 3rd and longs. Funny thing though, last night I thought our secondary actually looked much improved.
No doubt, but when our the backup of our backup is calling the plays issues are to be expected. Allowing 131 yards of total offense vs Miami is huge, and Eric Smith did a good job in calling the coverages. That's all I am getting at.
What I don't understand is how when the game is on the line we just switch to this awful zone and send three so the QB and the WRS have but all day to exploit said zone. If you want to send 3 fine, but why not man up with essentially 3 roaming safeties, one middle and 2 deep? Let the line do their job and get Ben. Or why not man up and have a delayed blitz from 7 yards out but still with 2 deep safties?? I just don't get why we never see this team in a 2 man EVER.
Good point gus, those outside overloads end up allowing the QB to simply step up into the pocket as the rushers fly by far too often. It seems that maybe a little strategy change on those could be helpful. Maybe take two of those overload guys and bullrush one blocker into the QB or have one of the 3 overload guys loop into the middle of the pocket so there is no place to step up.
Nice win - but lots of things to clean up before Chi - 100 yrd rusher - no pressure on the QB in the base defense - couldn't get off the field on third down - 3rd and 24!!! nuf said!! glad to have the win and not be a Giant fan today!!
That's complete bullshit. There is zero excuse for letting Pittsburgh convert a 3rd and 24 with the game on the line. It doesn't matter what the offense did before, it doesn't matter whether or not Pittsburgh got to call timeout before the play. The defense needs to step up and do their damn job.
I'm with you MBP. I was screaming at my screen to stop blitzing. Its been 14 games of the same thing week in and week out... HUGE conversions on 3rd and a MILE. It started with the Ravens game and hasn't improved an ounce all season. I like Rex but when is he gonna take a step back and admit that this is simply not working? I'm not a defensive coach, and I don't know what the solution is ... But I have eyes and I can see that the league has made their adjustments and we need to come up with a different approach. Giving up these kind of pass plays is inexcuseable.
Good first post. The 3-24 was hideous. This has to be fixed or offenses like SD and NE will eat us alive in the playoffs.
I'd also add to that, its no good sending a small DB at him either. The amount of times he shrugs off attempted sacks is ludicrous. That said, please stand up Drew Coleman http://goallineblitz.com/images/game/forum/smileys/clap.gif Defense ... T-A ... SCK... INT ... FF D. Coleman ... 9-1 ... 2.0... 0 ... 2
