I haven't thought about Stuckey in that way yet, vilmatic, but at the risk of oversimplifying because of the limited, early looks at the guy, Yes. And without checking his dimensions compared to Santana, even his stature looks Moss-like. He's a smallish receiver but extremely athletic. Terrific hands and juking moves like Washington after the catch. Speed looks good too. I'll eat my Section 227 hat if Mangini doesn't keep him. To be honest, I haven't had a good enough look at goal-line thumping, vilmatic. But what I've been reading on Barnes is good, so that's a good guess. But Jones is such a north-south guy (he really is) that I see nothing wrong with him going for it on 4th and goal, especially if our O-line continues developing and gelling. Adriene Clarke is one, big, wide dude in person. Kendall is taller and perhaps more intimidating in appearance than Clarke, but Clarke is heavier and chunkier... would have to be a real bitch to have to face on the line. And placed between D'Brick and Mangold, the left side looks good to me. Again, though, I'm no line expert and would rather defer details on that to others who study it more.
I know there's a dedicated Revis thread, but since his name came up here I have one comment (a personal opinion, really) on Revis: Mangini wasn't bullshitting the other day when he said Revis is missing out on a lot. In fact, if there's one thing I come away from with these sessions, it's that Revis wasn't there again. Every day that Revis is not in camp is becoming a huge loss in his development, IMO. I can't believe Tanny can't get him into camp. Kurt and I speculated there has to be something more to this than simply the 5-6 years issue, as reported constantly. There is a lot of work and valuable training going on out there... a lot of learning. The coaches are all active... all hands on, always talking, barking, reminding, etc. And with the longer sessions (almost 3 hours yesterday, counting the tail-end of the 2nd team 11 on 11's, this is going on non-stop from beginning to end, with Mangini personally wandering about taking notes and talking to players/coaches. My concern now is, with every passing TC session, that Revis is going to fall behind on the curve. I don't care how much raw talent the kid has, he's missing out on HUGE amounts of developmental advice with every hour that goes by, not to mention just the hands on practice of catching KR's, for example. He's missing out on all those drills that the other DBs are benefitting from. Enough said, but damn it Tanny, we need to get this resolved ASAP!
AP Wire LATE BREAKING NEWS: ESPN reported the NY Jets have cut wide receiver Coles and replaced him with 1st year rookie receiver Stuckey. The news was reported on TheGangGreen.com, the official reporting arm of the Jet's front office. haha. Great job with the TC report. My daily highlight as well....thank you!
Revis being there or not is NOT make or break for the Jets season really. Mangini's own comments were to the effect: "Revis aint here, so the valuable time is being used by other players to develop, and they ARE developing". So the silver lining is Barrett, Miller, others are getting the reps, coaching, workload, and THAT will help our team just as much, as all these guys will be playing.
Well, there's been some speculation that Revis could possibly start this year opposite Dyson. The expectations have been that high. All I'm saying is, Revis is missing a lot out there. I should have qualified my statement better by adding, "if there's one NEGATIVE thing I come away from with these sessions, it's that Revis wasn't there again." I'm not saying all the others aren't getting good quality time, and it's certainly very positive, what's going on with all the others. But make no mistake about it. Revis is missing out on a lot of early camp experience, especially because he's a rookie and especially because it seems Mangini has lengthened the sessions. Anyone with high hopes of Revis being a starter has to see those chances diminishing slightly with every passing day.
Sec227, no argument from me. Revis is setting himself way back. My only point is that the REST of the secondary may get a bit better because of all the first team reps their getting with Dyson hurt and Revis holding out. But then again, (can't remember the poster) said yesterday that we need Revis 100% to shut down Randy Moss on opening day, and that may set the tone for the season. Again, thanks for the great TC reports. Love em.
I just don't understand why a rookie would want to start off with a new team on the wrong foot. It automatically makes the fans dislike you, or at the least "label" you... and the teammates i'm sure have things to say as well. Someone like Revis should just suck it up, take the money he's being offered play his butt off, and then sign a monster contract after he has a few good seasons. it's just frustrating.
Yeah, that's a huge concern. I just read this morning where Moss may have injured himself at NE's camp. He sat out the afternoon session but it didn't sound like anything serious because he walked off the field. And with Revis, we're just seeing what he's missing out on the practice field every day. What about what he's missing on a lot of classroom stuff as well, and the videos taken from 3 angles... all the help the coaches could be giving him in coverages and skills... the mental stuff... just being able to talk to the other guys. I guess I'm just getting antsy waiting around for him to come into camp, not to mention I'd selfishly have liked to watch him yesterday, so I was secretly hoping something was going to get resolved by Tuesday night.
Entertaining read. This is what creates meaningful conversation. Nice work to you and your cohorts. I like what I'm hearing about Barnes. Askew who?
Thanks for all the kudos, guys. It's always a fun day at TC, especially if you can hook up with some other Jets fans and bounce ideas around. I'll try to go again soon and perhaps some of you can join us. And thanks again. This is my last post in this thread unless someone else has a question about something.
Thanks for this report...one of the best I've seen between all Jets sites and light years ahead of the guys that get paid to do it. Smith is starting to intrigue me at the QB position. How much time is he spending at QB and with which teams? Is there anything that leads you to believe that he might actually be competing for the 2 spot, or is this more of a gimmick preparation for the season?
If Wednesday and Sunday morning was any indication, Brad Smith is getting a lot of reps... probably at least as many as TuiWhateverTF. Yesterday it was pretty much a Chad, Clemens and Smith show, although Tui did take a couple here and there. I don't know if he's legitimately pushing the #2 position though. They've got him so busy doing so many other things, he's running around like a chicken with his head cut off. Clemens is still in there an aweful lot and, while consistency is a problem still, he's trying to demonstrate his "command presence," particularly after Mangini made a comment about that very thing on Tuesday... something about he likes seeing a QB who corrects people if they're out of position. Yesterday, before one snap, I think it was Alvin Banks (34) who was moving over to Clemens' left and apparently Clemens knew this was incorrect. So he actually shoved Banks to the right and barked at him. Of course, Mangini was right behind them all... But Clemens has some nice passes and appears to run the offense fairly smoothly. I don't know, I think it would really take some doing for Smith to dislodge Clemens from the #2 slot. It's Clemens' to lose at this point, I think.
Thats good to hear. It sounds more like Clemens is earning the spot as opposed to getting it by default. Hearing that he's moving the offense "smoothly" is probably the best thing I've heard about his progression to date.
I was thinking that maybe Mangini and Schotty are starting to look at Brad Smith in a role as almost the Tim Tebow to our offense, only he'd throw more. He really adds another dimension to this team, even moreso then a Randle El, because the guy was an incredibly successful quarterback in college.
Jonathan_Vilma: I think I'm going to open up another thread tomorrow, about QBs. It's an ongoing thing, but I'm more than a little concerned about a couple of things, which I'll talk about then.
