I think we're probably going to take one just by virtue of the fact that a young QB usually buys a coach/GM a couple years. These guys are concerned with keeping their jobs/paychecks first and the long-term future of the team second. Think about Mougey in particular - this is probably by far the most money he's made per year at any time in his life. He'll have final say on who we take in the first round. I think at bare minimum we'll trade back but still take a QB in the first round. Most GMs are terrified to do this though and will want to keep a high pick to take the guy they like the most. I don't have any data on this but I feel like the teams that are patient enough to wait for a QB are usually the ones with longtime GMs who already have a track record of success and job security.
I think Nussmeier is who I want and who we should take. He just has great arm talent and layers the ball maybe the best I can really remember in college football. His production has been poor this year. LSU is a mess though and just fired Brian Kelly. They’ve had pretty much no running game all year, lost both tackles to the NFL, and he’s had an oblique injury they’ve been downplaying all year that has made his ball lose zip. He’s been gutting through it though. I don’t think you take him in the top ten. Not sure how you get him because he might not last to the second. Longer Condensed
Is his age a concern at all? Will be 24 by draft time. Generally not a great sign if a guy takes that long to really play well in college. Seems like he did play pretty well last year but you'd know better than me.
I think it’s the new norm in college. Guys are getting paid a lot of money to stay in school. He was also stuck behind Jayden Daniels for two years. At other positions it’s a concern due to the lifespan of a NFL player. QB’s play until they’re 40 though and are super protected.
There's been no great Qb's who have been drafted 24 years old or older. But Nussmeir fits the Bill Parcell's profile: 3 year college starter graduate from college start 30+ games win 23 games 2 to 1 td/int ratio 60%+ completion ratio intangibles - leadership, toughness, clutch Recent Qb's who fit this: Caleb Williams Jayden Daniels Drake Maye Bo Nix Trevor Lawrence Joe Burrow Justin Hebert Tua Tagovailoa Current college Qb's who fit this: Nussmeier Sellers Allar Klubnik Of them with age being considered, Sellers seems like our guy.
I like Nussmeier. I think he could do well in Engstrand's system. Precision style field general that gets the ball out quick and move the chains. Which is what Goff does/did in Detroit with Engstrand's influence. Nussmeier has a quicker release than Sellers and he is very good in the middle of the field. But dang man, Sellers is younger, bigger, stronger and faster. I go back and forth on if I like Nuss or Sellers more. But they are my two favorite in this class. Gotta worry about the Saints grabbing him first though since his dad is the OC there.
Am I misunderstanding something here? Sellers had 4 passing attempts his freshman year. I don't think that qualifies as starting and disqualifies him from the 3 year starter thing. He's also a redshirt sophomore? Is he graduating early? Nussmeier is closer to counting as a 3 year starter but he doesn't really qualify either.
The age thing is pretty unfair though. There hasn’t ever really been a pool of guys coming out of college at 23-24 like there is now because of the extra covid year they all got and all the transfer waivers they’re handing out like candy. Pavia just sued and wala he gets another year of eligibility simply because they don’t want to deal with any more lawsuits. Guys coming out at 23-25 used to be very rare pre-2020 and NIL. They were generally that old because of religious missions. So it’s not like there’s a big pool of 23-24 year old QB’s that we can look at and say look at all these failures. For what it’s worth, Penix and Bo Nix were both 24 on draft night in 2024. Jayden Daniels was 23 and so was Burrow. Nussmeier is really only a two year starter. He had a big bowl game in 2023 when Daniels declared for the draft but that’s about it.
Agree 100% I do NOT want to see us use a 2nd rounder on a QB as I can already tell you he will bust. That has happened 100% of the time with us under similar circumstances…if we had an Andy Reid or Kyle Shanahan or Kevin O’Connell as our HC then that would be a very different answer from me, but seeing as we have the millionth DC as our HC, I already KNOW what the outcome would be. A waste not only of the pick but of yet another year watching a putrid offense.
Almost no doubt we go QB in the first round now. Just a matter of whether it's early or we go value hunting later in the round. Apparently the WR class is deep so that lends itself to us taking the QB first and a WR second.
It's going to be pretty hard to outbid us for the top QB if we decide to go that route. Our competition is the Saints, Dolphins, and Raiders and none of them have nearly the draft capital we do.
You left off Jackson and Hurts. Even just looking at the passing numbers, their passer ratings are 136.7 (!!!) and 114.4. They're been elite QBs this year, even with Jackson missing games, and this is indisputable.
No trade ups please. Let the board come to you. I won't mind a trade down to secure more capital for later rounds so we take multiple shots at WR's and RB's
I have to believe you are correct on this one. If these kids are already coming out millionaires, there is no need to rush out of college to get their heads kicked in at the Pro level. They can sit on "easy street" at whatever school and dominate the competition all while padding their bank accounts. Also, considering medicine these days, it's more and more common they play later into their 30's and early 40's rendering a 24 year old a near 20 year vet by the time they retire. Still, regardless of all that, I swear to you...this unexplainable NEED to burn a 1st round pick on a guy who isn't worth a 2nd JUST BECAUSE they are the top QB of a shit stain QB class needs to go AWAY! I mean, for fuck's sake. If I did that in my job I'd be fired before I could finish the transaction. "Hmmmm...let's buy a Netgear router because there are no new Cisco models this year." Yeah, talk about losing my job!
This is a legit worry…the pressure will surely be on, and I have zero faith in AG knowing how to develop a QB, because, you know, why WOULD he? He’s a defense guy. I get plenty of people here are happy with all the picks, but we’ve all been down this road before…accumulating picks by trading away good players is relatively easy…using those picks to simultaneously improve other positions while replacing those same players is not as easy. I get Mougey is new here and so is AG, but we’ve have decades of proof that we don’t know how to do this AT ALL. It starts from Woody, who I’m sure will be looking for a splashy use of his new picks…and I’m concerned because while this QB class was supposed to be all that, it’s kind of turning out to be not so much. Kind of like what Parcells used to say…if you have 2 QBs, you really don’t have any. We’ll see…its still way early obviously, but it is kinda feeling like the safer bet will be to use those picks on whatever blue chip players may be available at WR, Edge, or CB and build the team if there is no QB that really pops out, and if we have to go the journeyman free agent route for 2026 to get to the QB draft of 2027, that may make some sense. Again, way too early for serious talk, but I’m following the QB draft chats and such, and it’s looking like there may not be as much quality there as we had thought coming into the year
