Wow, damn good write up, as always!

I guess the only real question I have is does he last until the second round and, if so, at 44 will he be available? Followed by, is 33 too much of a reach if necessary. After all that, I guess the real initial question is should we even bother to start with.

If you look back to the Vol. I of this QB thread, he was my favorite going into the season. It's like I'm trying to talk myself back into him. Worst case for Jets fans - we draft Nussmeier, a flawed QB with potential, who shows enough on the field to improve the Jets enough to miss out on a potentially better and longer-term QB solution in 2027, but will never develop as more than a mid-tier QB. I'm sticking with my "maybe" at #44. But if I were betting on it, I think someone scoops him up earlier. Wouldn't surprise me at all if the Browns used the second of their two first round picks. They just hired a new HC - same guy sitting up in booth as Georgia OC watching Nuss put a scare into UGA in the 2022 SEC Championship game. Although, Cleveland has a Pro Bowl QB already, so maybe that's just crazy talk. Heh.

Did I read somewhere that Reich was a QB whisperer of sorts? If he is, then it was a genius hire for this team.

I don't know who he's developed but he's been successful with almost any QB thrown his way... except Bryce Young who was taken first overall by the team he coached. So who knows. But history says if he has a competent QB he can get the most out of them.

I think that was QR Whisperer. He has those little codes stamped in all his undies to remind him which city he had to move to this time. True story, as far as I know. :)

Thanks.. At this point, that's about all we can hope for. Maybe he'll hang around as a QBC when his contract is up. Just imagine if he can get something out of Fields... Miracles do happen. :)

The way I am looking at this, we are trying to convince ourselves into the prospects who are VERY flawed. Nuss is 6-1, 202 lbs, baby hands, and was injured most of last year. That alone is a huge red flag even if he were a monster in College. But he was no monster according to you guys who watch every game. More like inconsistent. And he started total of 23 games and is already 24 year old. I don't know if this is worth a shot in top 44. Screams like a 3d rounder where you basically draft a long term back-up, who has some small probability of an upside.

Maybe Ty Simpson if he does measure full 6-2 210lb? A little bigger than Nuss, but still small guy, hurt multiple times last year, 15 career starts, already 23. I just don't know if these guys are built to last in the NFL. Even with all the rules protecting a QB, they are going to take some hits. And they are already hurt in College even without starting many games. Let's see what the combine looks like for Simpson. Maybe if he measures well, could be an option, but the best strategy may be to take 4 best non QB players two 1st two rounds, and then if some QB is there in mid rounds, take him as a developmental back-up, and focus on QB in 2027.

    Yup.

    Would be nice if we had a “competent” QB…but alas…we don’t :(

I agree that’s probably the best strategy for us given this draft class…and we’ve had conversations about mid-round “developmental” QB prospects before…

My take is that VERY few ever work out…some do (Dak, Purdy, obviously Brady, etc.) but overall, those are the very rare exceptions. And more specificallly, WE have NEVER done it. NEVER. In our history. We have never had a successful QB taken outside the first round (shit…even most of our first rounders end up failing).

So while I’m ok with the theory of using like a third or fourth rounder on a project, in reality, for us, I think we’d just be throwing the pick in the trash can and would probably be better off signing a scrub like Mariota, Brissett, etc. For US, we’d more likely be drafting another Morgan or Petty or Clemens (2nd rounder I know)…not great history here, so to think that THIS HC can do better? Yeah…not really buying into that.

If we can get Brissett for a day 3 pick that's probably our best bet. Smart, good locker room guy, put up really nice numbers last year. The problem is MLF probably agrees.

    Brissett
    Backup
    Nuss at 44

Would be a good QB room to walk into the season with.

Yup…man to me, Brissett is just one of the most bland, unexciting QBs I can think of, just speaks of mediocrity and a boring season with no upside hope at all.

But yah, the honest truth is that he would be the perfect bridge guy to get us to the 2026 draft, and he’d be better than most of the QBs we’ve had here lately, and certainly better than the shit we had to watch last year.

Reich coached Brissett in Indy and they were decent together, so I get the link there for sure.

Cimini says history shows Reich prefers "taller, pocket passer types" and he wanted Stroud over Bryce Young in Carolina but was overruled. Since he's just the OC here he could be overruled again but your "taller, pocket passer type" NOT named Mendoza in this draft is Carson Beck. And Reich saw Beck beat him 42-7 last year first hand.

Idk, Brissett and Beck in the 4th or something is a decent bridge. Would free up pick number 44 for an immediate contributor like Germie Bernard at WR or a CB like Will Lee

Beck in anywhere before the 5th would be hard to swallow.

if you get passed the douchey parts he’s not a bad prospect. Size, experience, accuracy… not great with the deep ball but I’m talking round 4 here lol.

The big thing is I don’t think he’s much different than Simpson or Nussmeier who are both projected much higher, with less experience

I'm not really talking myself into anyone at this point. I'm pretty much going off what I see in my "little" exposure to these kids in the all star type games. At this point, personally, I would go into the season with what we have. Maybe pick up another VERY CHEAP FA veteran but I do NOTHING to jeopardize landing a top 3 pick in the 2027 draft. Drafting "Nuss" or some other kid, in 2026, is merely getting someone on the team who is young and can learn. Not looking for them to be a day 1 starter or even mid-season starter. Just looking for a warm body who isn't 15 years in the league and on their last leg, so to speak.

I guess, to summarize, I'm just turning over rocks to see what's under them. LOL!

For me, the guy's ceiling is just extremely low in today's NFL. With Simpson or Nuss you can see them developing into the type of QB that succeeds longterm. Not that they will, but at least there's a chance.

Not disagreeing, just giving the pro-Nuss side, so his number of starts aren't what decides his fate. I still agree with 3rd Round value. But, if you buy that his down-season in 2025 was due to a nagging injury, you have to wash nine of those 23 starts. And, he wasn't starting in 2022 or 2023 because LSU picked up an eventual Heisman winner in Jayden Daniels in the portal. So, that only leaves 2024 as his one clean season starting. Same as Simpson, except his was in 2025. You actually hit on a really good question: Two SEC QBs, both with (essentially) one year as a starter, both with roughly equivalent talent around them, both roughly equivalent strength of schedule, both roughly equivalent in size, both battling some kind of torso injury through 2/3rds of the season, both who sat behind NFL QBs before getting the starting job and both taking advantage in the year they did - which was better? I'd say Nuss, but not by a ton. Mostly because he looked like the real deal even before starting, and LSU's 2024 failings were more on defense than offense. But I could talk myself into Simpson if I sit here long enough.

Yeah, both seem to be similar. Simpson to me may be better IF he measures better at the combine plus he is a year younger (10 months to be exact, but still). Slim pickings if you ask me, maybe worth to save the capital for 2027.

Yeah, mid round is more for a cheap longer term back-up than a FQB, but with some small potential. The more I look at it, the more it feels like we should take our chances in 2027 for a longer term QB solution. Hopefully the QB draft will not be as dreadful as it is this year and there will be a path for us to get a good prospect.

From all I’m seeing, none of these guys are any kind of sure thing in terms of developing into good NFL starters…that just doesn’t scream round 1 or 2 to me, but they probably will go that way…at least I can see Simpson being a late first or early second round pick.

I think we’d be better off using our first 4 picks on position players who will improve our team…

And not saying Mougey is in MacCagnon’s territory here, but I for sure wouldn’t want to take one of these kids now and have that take us out of the QB game next draft…like fucking Mac did in passing on Mahomes and Watson because he had drafted Hackenberg in the second round the year before.

I don’t think Mougey is THAT kind of stupid…

But I don’t know…we have just never been able to develop a mid round QB…I have no reason to believe we can do it now with AG in charge…

You know, the question relieve boils down to ego. Much like your description of the Hackenberg drafting, if Mougey’s EGO doesn’t get in the way then you could see a scenario where he picks up a guy with our 44th pick and doesn’t let that deter him from drafting a first round guy next year. At the very least, if they can develop the 2026 QB pick, he becomes trade capital later on down the line. Much like what the Packers do.
