This. Glad to read theyve finally quasi benched him. He's not an MLB player anymore. He cant call a good game, can't defend, and can't hit except for the occasional HR. The minors have plenty of guys like that.
Higgy 4 hrs Fat Gary 2, Higgy is a nice backup but I don't think he can play everyday. Trashcan should have traded Fat Gary in the off season
Maybe he can bridge us to Austin Wells, not sure how much more time in the minors he needs. Im fine rolling with Higgy this year. We have plenty of fire power to cover a light hitting catcher. He definitely should have traded him. I said at the end of last year the Gary Sanchez experiment should be over.
I watched today for the first time in a bit as I haven't been too into it. Sanchez looks just awful at the plate. Waving at everything with absolutely no timing. He had a good at bat late in the game for himself, but even as he fouled everything off he was just tapping it. Should've moved him for a pitcher back when the idea was being floated around about him for Syndegaard.
When was that under discussiion? If that was really a thing, Cash should be executed on the spot. Regardless of how they've turned out, if you have a young starting pitcher with huge upside in your sights and you won't move a one-dimensional slugger who plays shoddy defense for him, you shouldn't be GM.
I'm not sure if it had legs or if it was a talk show idea but I remember it being talked about. Cashman certainly saw him as the next Posada hoping he'd level out at .260/25/90 for a long period of time. And taking the defensive deficiencies for what they were. The difference is that while they both had/have pass ball issues and a strong arm, Posada called a good game and Sanchez doesn't. It's a double edged sword trading offense for pitching. Offense lasts much longer in the modern day, but it would've been smart to be forward thinking about trying to add pitching and realizing you can get by with a good defensive catcher that gives you .220/10/50 with all the other offense they've had. Baseball is getting sad to watch though. The MLB is trying to focus on pace of play when the game is faltering because of the home run/strikeout issue and the launch angle revolution.
I had a big discussion with my 26 year old son about this. OPS is king. Who gives a shit if the guy strikes out 3/4 at bats as long as he hits that double. Today's game just sucks compared to baseball in the 70's and 80's. The '77 Yankees used 13 pitchers. The 2019 Yanks used 36.
I'm a couple years older than your son but I even remember 10-15 years ago it was never this bad in terms of the strikeouts. Also, as far as the pitching is concerned I think the problem is the introduction of heavy weight lifting into pitching. Pitchers from the 70s/80s were much skinnier. It was all arm and it's amazing that their arms didn't break down but I guess as a whole they weren't throwing as hard. Pitchers today focus a lot on lower body strength and there is just no way to strengthen the elbow or shoulder enough to keep up with the torque that the lower body and midsection generates from all that weight lifting. I played baseball for a decade and even as only someone who played in their youth, it's fucking infuriating to see someone strikeout with a runner on second no outs and not get them over. Or the amount of guys that strikeout on three pitches. That's why it's awesome watching LeMahieu hit. Dudes a contact machine.
