JOK not going in the first round has to be the biggest shock of the night.

There are multiple good linemen and 2nd/3rd level defenders to make the trade back really plausible, especially with the break now.

Maybe, but if Jenkins is still there, it has to be him.

    Thanks for sharing this.

Between this, and his brief "interview" on the podium, Zach's enthusiasm really seems genuine. I'm sure he and his family would've loved going to SF, but they have to have realized that NY is the biggest stage and biggest opportunity. I think Zach 5th Avenue is going to be a hit!

You must not like Wilson if you want Davis pass blocking for him.

Really? Edge rusher? CB? Top LB not Mosely who hasn't played in 2 years. These types of players don't grow on trees. We don't have any of that. We have Maye and Quinnen and Maye could be gone after this year. The FAs we signed aren't dominating. When was the last time we dominant front 7? 1986? Probably why we haven't won shit.

You can get good WRs anywhere. OL you can get too especially if you already have a LT, but you can't get dominant EDGE, CB, or LB unless you draft one or pay an exorbitant amount for an aging player in FA.

So again, we lose 30-3. This scheme requires a dominant fast hard tackling front 7. We have 1 player, Quinnen & the others are "nice."

Not necessarily. I like him. I wouldn't be mad about taking him. I'm just not sure I wouldn't prefer to get a few more quality players over him right now with the state of this team. Idk. Curious how JD plays this. Given JAX doesn't take him.

We also have, Fant. I thought he played well for us and should only get better moving forward. I still think I'm leaning towards trading back as the best option for us.

A lot of possibilities. Elijah Moore, JOK, Asante Samuel Jr, Terrace Marshall, Azeez Ojulari, Dyami Brown, Liam Eichenburg, Jevonte Williams, Jackson Carman, Tyson Campbell, etc...

I don't know. It might be worth trading back for me. I would be stoked with Jenkins though too though.

We are In a good situation right now. That's the main thing.

Utter nonsense imo. Yes, we need those things, but in the grand scheme of ensuring that Wilson develops and succeeds, those things have to wait. We were never fixing all of our needs/holes this year anyway. You don't understand anything about drafting a rookie QB and roster building if you want to put D over making sure that Wilson succeeds. This is not a normal draft.

New York Jets draft Alijah Vera-Tucker: USC guard’s job is to protect new QB Zach Wilson

    By Connor Hughes

Jets general manager Joe Douglas used his first pick in the 2021 NFL Draft on quarterback Zach Wilson. He used his second to protect him.

The Jets traded up from No. 23 to the Vikings’ 14th selection, where they picked USC offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker. In addition to No. 23, the Jets gave up both of their third-round selections (No. 66 and No. 86), and got back the Vikings’ fourth-rounder (No. 143).

Here’s the immediate reaction to the addition.

Big Board ranking: While Oregon’s Penei Sewell and Northwestern’s Rashawn Slater were considered the top two linemen in this year’s class, Vera-Tucker wasn’t far behind. He was No. 13 on Dane Brugler’s list of the Top 300 prospects.

Introduction: Vera-Tucker, 21, is among the more athletic and versatile linemen in this year’s draft. He’s 6-4 and 308 pounds. He ran the 40-yard dash in 5.10 seconds, had a 32-inch vertical and benched 225 pounds 32 times. He started 13 games at left guard in 2019, and six at left tackle in 2020. He allowed five sacks, two quarterback hits and two hurries in those starts, finishing with Pro Football Focus grades of 78.8 (2019) and 81.8 (2020).

Here’s more from Brugler’s NFL Draft guide: “Balanced, agile blocker…stays patient and under control in his pass sets, settling his feet to mirror and stay square to rushers…relies on physical hands and strike timing to maintain spacing between defenders and his body…shows the functional strength to win hand battles and re-anchor…latches and generates movement in the run game…scoops defenders and turns/escorts them away from the play…alert eyes and processes things quickly to pick up stunts and delayed pressures…looks comfortable pulling and engaging linebackers at the second level…always looking for warm bodies to block and doesn’t let up until well after the whistle…his coaches rave about his mental makeup and competitive edge…starting experience at both tackle and guard.”

How he fits: The Jets had a need at guard, and Vera-Tucker fills that. While he has the versatility to play both inside and out, he’ll start there, barring injury, come Week 1.

Second guess: The Jets wanted guard Joe Thuney in free agency, but once the Chiefs and Patriots got involved, they realized they had no shot of signing him. So, it became imperative they address the line during the NFL Draft. While they’re comfortable at tackle with Mekhi Becton and George Fant, and believe a healthy Connor McGovern will thrive in this zone-blocking scheme, guard remained a need. Vera-Tucker, after Slater, was the top guard in this draft.

For that reason, there’s no second-guessing from the Jets. The only thing that might cause a little pause was the decision to give up both of their third-round picks to move up. The positive: The Jets can recoup some capital if they decide to trade down in the second round. Right now, they’re slated to pick at No. 34.

Rookie impact: The Jets proved last year they have no problem starting a rookie lineman right away. They drafted Becton 11th overall, and he was the team’s left tackle beginning the first day of training camp. Expect the same from them this year.

Depth chart impact: Greg Van Roten and Alex Lewis started at the Jets’ two guard positions last season. They both struggled. While they’re still under contract, Vera-Tucker will replace one. There’s a chance the Jets aren’t done addressing the offensive line. They could still add a player in the second or fourth rounds capable of starting.

Fast evaluation: Douglas loves his draft picks. The fact he was willing to give up two premium third-rounders to move up for Vera-Tucker? It shows how much he coveted the USC offensive lineman. It was the right move, too. The Jets must keep Wilson upright. Douglas promised fans he’d build a dominant offensive and defensive line at his introductory news conference, and this is another step in doing so. Vera-Tucker and Becton should form a formidable pairing on the front for the next 10 years.
