I think the most anointed young yankee, Greg Bird, is on borrowed time at this point. He came in and had a good September call up, a good postseason last year... that's it.
I had a lot of hope for Bird after he hit 11 HR's in 46 games 3 years ago. Injuries and subpar performance have dimmed those hopes. Can't afford to have below average production at first on a playoff contender. On the bright side Gray was great out of the pen, but it wasn't murderer's row he was facing. Good to see him attacking hitters instead of nibbling.
Bird is batting clean-up tonight. When was the last time that a .215 hitter batted clean-up for the Yankees this late in the season?
Yanks have had a lot of young guys look great immediately in the last two seasons. Sometimes those guys turn out to be Kevin Maas, not Bernie Williams. Only time will tell. What you really need is stout pitching, which the Yanks just do not have.

Nice outing for Sevy, thought it was gonna be another disaster after the first inning, but he settled down. At this point, I'm not even worried about what Boston does. If we catch them, great. If not, then it's onto the WC game against the AL West's second place team.
Make it 4 in a row. Happ with a solid outing and the Yanks hit 5 dingers. As I said earlier today, I'm not gonna constantly check to see how the Sox are doing.
"Jim, . Gene Carr couldn't put the puck in the ocean if he was standing on the edge of a pier!" knew I heard that from somewhere...... .
Well it doesn't help that this is the World Series for the Mets and the absolute only thing they have to look forward to in the season. Heck, they meddled up their rotation to have DeGrom pitch last night. But Severino is a problem, they say he's tipping his pitches but it's not like he's hitting his spots
He did acquire Happ, Lynn, and Britton. Britton's command has been a problem, but you can't say that Cash didn't try to upgrade the pitching. The bigger issue is Sevy not being ace like for over a month.
I think they would have, but only if the Yankees blew them away with an offer that included multiple starters plus prospects. I just don't think the Yankees were willing to do something like that.
Yeah, nice job. If the Yankees are going to do anything special in the playoffs, I bet Happ will be a big part of it.
