For the many younger fans who weren't around for Jets Football at Shea Stadium, this photo illustrates nicely how the lower level seats swiveled-out for football games. You may remember that when configured for baseball, that field level section did not extend beyond the Loge seats (far right). Shea was built with the lower section on rails, so they could push out to make the playing area rectangular rather than baseball diamond shaped. This enabled enough room for the end zone in the closed end, where home plate was. It was a nice feature that surprisingly was not (as far as I know) incorporated into other multi-use stadiums of that era. Maybe someone else here knows how that was accomplished. I imagine moving them back and forth was not easy.
