IMO they should forget about the 4-man fronts and just stick to the 3-4 and focus on playing that well. That's why I said DE wasn't a need. Of course, if Bowles is gonna persist in the 4-man fronts, then yes, they do need a legit 4-3 DE. I don't think taking a TE is insane at all. Someone will be starting at QB. Howard would help whomever that is. There may not be a QB in this draft they like, or they may not be able to draft him. What are they supposed to do, just not try to improve the offense at all until they get a QB? If so, once they get that QB, he isn't gonna have any chance to succeed if he doesn't have quality players/weapons around him.
ok well, my feeling for the Jets taking a QB in this draft is that they will be adding one more to their arsenal of novice NFL projects. None of the top three projected, Kizer, Watson nor Kubinski are 1st round material in my eyes. When you have so many different opinions by experts saying which of these is the best over all , then as far as I'm concerned it's not worth the gamble. http://www.newyorkjets.com/videos/v...-No-1-QB/bdcf573f-ef4c-4ec0-87f1-ce8ed6686e6d
"Nothing ventured; nothing gained". Even with an "arsenal of novice NFL projects", the fact remains that they need to find a franchise QB. IMO Watson could be that guy, and if he's available the Jets should take him. Taking him at #6 doesn't prevent them from adding other talent in subsequent rounds or via FA/trades, and the impact of finding their FQB far outweighs any risk.
You seemed to be stuck on the concept that Watson is a FQB.....I don't see it. I don't think the Jets see it either. I'll make the wager that they pass on him. We shall see.
I'm stuck on the concept that they need to find a FQB, and he's the best one available (possibly). And I don't agree with waiting until 2018 for MAYBE a high draft pick that would allow any better chance of finding one. Of course I don't know for sure if he IS a FQB...if I knew that, I'd be an NFL GM. But I value intangibles higher than raw ability, and he's got great intangibles. I wonder what Belichick would've done if he didn't have Drew Bledsoe already when he drafted Brady? Would he have grabbed him sooner, perhaps even with his 1st pick? If you're sure that the Jets FQB can be gotten in a lower round, okay, but I don't think so.
I would warm up to the idea of them signing a legit starting QB and drafting Howard. The combination of, for example Taylor/Howard, does sound intriguing.
Dak Prescott, Russel Wilson are examples of good QBs that were drafted In later rounds who turned into FQB because they were drafted by teams that had the pieces in place for them to succeed. The current jets don't have enough pieces in place for the jets to reach for a QB that may have to sit for a year. It's just not how sustainable successful long term teams are built. If teams are going to miss on picks, let it be the later picks in the draft. Rounds 1-3 should garner enough good players for teams if they took BPA and stopped reaching. Unless the jets are going to start him day one, then they have to pass and select a player that will start day one this fall.
If the Jets believe a guy could be their FQB, then they should draft him thinking he can win the starting job, Day 1, and if he does, start him. Two of the QBs mentioned that could fit this bill are Watson and Mahomes, both of whom have great intangibles and can make things happen when they leave the pocket or the play breaks down, which we can expect will happen a lot. The Jets need play makers and these two have proven they are that. Neither will last to the 2nd round for sure, so if the Jets want either they're going to have to take one with their first pick. Edit at 12:32 RMT: As an aside, the latest Walter Football Mock has the Giants taking Watson with their 1st pick (I don't agree he'll fall that far, but they do). I will seriously consider ending my 54 year rooting for the Jets if that were to happen. Can you imagine the Jets drafting yet ANOTHER "D" player and seeing the Giants grab Watson who then goes on to become their FQB? And as to "enough pieces", if you add a talent like Watson or Mahomes, and add a stud RB and upgrade the OL, you have the pieces.
You think Mahomes is going to be BPA when jets are on board in first round? I don't Watson will be BPA but Mahomes?! The Giants are going to end up with the OL Ramczyck or a DE named Solomon Thomas.
I'm not certain yet, but from what I've read/seen so far, Mahomes may be the BPQB at #6. With Eli getting old, and not being what he once was, the Giants need to be thinking about his replacement. If Watson or Mahomes were there at 23, I believe they would pounce.
IDK.....a weak year for QB FAs.....perhaps Taylor would be the most suited, since he's still young....I don't think there's much else.....don't like giving up the bank for Cousins.
I really don't want them to sing ANY FA QB - or trade for one, even worse - who would block the development of Petty/Hack/Rookie drafted. Buut I'm sure that Macc will sign one in the pursuit of winning as many meaningless games this year as they can, which will screw them out of a high draft pick and chance for a FQB in 2018 if they don't get one this year.
I wouldn't either, but you know they're in the unenviable position of not wanting to take the chance with what they have now. There has to be a 3rd QB; most likely an experienced starter...perhaps a 2 year deal. Then hopefully one of the youngsters take over.....that's a lot to ask though.
Watson is hot garbage..Taj Boyd on steroids No QB worth taking early Jets develop the OL now or they are just stupid.. Oh wait...
at this point i am definitely warming up to going heavy on the TE, OL, and RB positions in april which is a total reversal of the usual thought. even though we don't have a QB that doesn't mean u ignore the surrounding cast. do think its imperative the jets gather another pick or 2 during rounds 2 or 3 so we can also address the secondary and LB positions. still don't think QB will be called this year.
