What difference does it make? It's him or the thugs around him. Was there an assault? Yes! Did they break the law? Yes! End of story.

They didn't break the law according to the police, who get the final say on the matter. The video clearly shows nobody struck the woman, and while ripping her signs is wrong, it's hard to arrest the sign-ripper for assault when the woman was also being abusive.

What exactly do you consider "doing the right thing"?

abysmul , In this particular instance I consider " doing the right thing " as coming forward and proceeding with reopening an investigation now as opposed to sitting on it forever or until the election is over .

The good thing for Trump is nobody is asking for his tax returns anymore. The bad thing for Trump is Comey admitted he doesn't have anything. He doesn't even know if he has any e-mails that they haven't already seen.

Comey's letter is pretty extraordinary for the manner in which it says practically nothing substantive. Dumping that on Friday afternoon is also curious.

When someone official says the bare minimum about something, it generally means they have a lot more to say and don't want to for some reason, or that they have nothing at all but were pressured to say something.

I think this could mean that the FBI's got something damaging and he's going away out of his way to avoid saying that directly. Of course, it could also mean that they've got absolutely nothing, and were pressured by congressional republicans to put this out for political reasons. That certainly appears to be the consensus on the NY Times comment page. I'm not buying that. It's much more likely the DOJ, under the current president, has more influence over the FBI than congress does.

I've already voted for Clinton, despite a nagging concern that she's been whistling past the graveyard for the last two years on the emails. It has always occurred to me that someone like her wouldn't ever stick her neck out knowing there was any actual possibility of a guillotine coming down on it. If it turns out there really is some fire behind all the smoke, she's going to get justifiably crucified.

Comey runs a law enforcement agency. The fact that he commented on Secretary Clinton's irresponsibility when she didn't meet the standard of criminal indictment is a little chilling. I would have fired him based on that alone. The FBI either turns criminals over to the DOJ or they turn them loose because they don't meet the standard to indict and aren't criminals. He has tried to walk a middle line. He deserves to be fired and the Republican lawmakers who brought him into public hearings who swore to uphold the Constitution should be thrown out of office by their constituents.

I'm not saying the standard for running for President is innocent until proven guilty, I'm saying the standard for anyone working for the FBI including the director is you don't throw stones you either indict or STFU.

The fbi head is in between a rock and hard place . Clinton was cleared? Based on emails investigated. Now it seems there is further emails found on a computer sent to an aide but possibly seen by a future prisoner ( weiner) . If clinton is elected she could have been blackmailed by Weiner who may have seen classified or embarrasing personal emails by Clinton. By telling congress now , the world knows. By not telling and announcing post clinton winning the election , trump would have been at the supreme court quicker than usain bolt. clinton may not like it but had she not used an unsecured email server all this investigation would have never occurred.

As much as I hate Clinton, if Comey did this without something significant it was a really shitty move and I will have lost all respect for him. There had better be a bloody smoking gun. You don't influence the US Presidential election from the seat of the head of the FBI for self preservation or worse.

Comey reports to the Attorney General, a cabinet-level official in an administration that is up to its eyeballs with Hillary Clinton, to put it charitably. Maybe the reason he hasn't been fired is that Obama's smart enough not to orchestrate another Saturday Night Massacre?

Really, what's Comey's motivation in all of this? To curry favor with Republicans so he can hang onto his job? Don't buy it.
