Bc we signed Kerley too..& that's 3 big contracts into one position. Plus Amaro, somebody is gonna be a waste of money.. Maybe if this was a super bowl or nothing year coming up. But my god we would have the best WR core Id that happened. Easily. But we'd be like the 9ers that can't utilize it most likely
Who cares? So you "waste" some money for a season or two. I would submit that entire payroll has been a waste of money, if getting only 3-5 wins means anything. Football contracts are basically year-long entities. yeah, there's some cap hit if you end them too soon, but, in the Jets situation, they will have 30-40 million in available cap room. Why ANYONE should be concerned with spending money on a position of obvious need seems penny-wise and pound-foolish.
I agree with you that every spot on the roster is important. But relative to each other, different positions have very different values. If some of our offensive linemen suck, we should definitely try to replace them with better ones, but that doesn't mean we have to do it in the first round or with a high priced free agent. Because guards require limited athleticism compared to many other positions, it's easier to find good ones, whether in later rounds in the draft, or via free agency. Also, I really don't think our O-Line is that bad. Ever since Winters has been sidelined, they have significantly improved. If we had a QB who could read the defense, and adjust offensive play calling, they would look much better than they do. Mangold is the best center in the NFL this year. Brick has been declining, but I'd say he's still an average tackle, just not the good one he used to be. He is the one we will probably have to spend a first rounder at some point on, to replace. But probably not this year, there don't seem to be any dominant tackles in this draft. Aboushi is not bad. He's one of the better ranked guards in the league in run blocking, and while not as good in pass blocking, he's not terrible like Winters either. With Winters playing, it was constantly seeing someone blow by him and fly at Geno, I don't see that with Aboushi that often. Colon looks done. Giacomini's got some bad penalties, but again, I don't think he's terrible, sort of average if he could just cut down on the penalties. If I am running the team, I think I'd sign a budget priced veteran guard in the offseason to back up Aboushi and Dozier, but I would try to get those two young guys to develop into decent starters. That's also another reason why I wanted (if possible) to trade Wilkerson for picks and draft Gregory and sign a pass rusher. We could use the Wilkerson picks to refill the O-Line for the future, maybe grab a tackle in mid-first round.
Kerley doesn't have a big contract, neither does Amaro. I'd love for the Jets to have the best receiving corps in the NFL. Imagine that?
No, our OL IS that bad. The inability to pass protect in obvious passing situations; the penalties that have stopped drives. The inability to run block consistently. And, really, I know we're all Jets fans but the notion that Mangold is somehow the "best center in the league" comes from what? Lack of false starts?! He's no bruiser, that's for sure. He's JAG, living on press clippings. The jets OL is decent at run blocking. But, really, how important is that in a passing league? And they've not shown that when the defense decides it will stop the run that they can run anyway.
Our OLine is poor, but Mangold has been the best center in the league in 2014. This doesn't come from nothing; even PFF which grades every OLine in the league graded Mangold as the best this year, and by a far margin. PFF doesn't just guess.
Jets OL is penalty friendly, led by Willie Colon. Has nothing to do with the QB or playcalling, Colon has been a liability on passing downs since his Steeler days. Very undisciplined. First thing Jets should do come 12:01 AM is call up the top RG available and go after them. Let Winters, Aboushi, Dozier, Johnson and whatever other young lineman go to battle for the LG spot.
Throw good money at Iupati and draft OT/QB in round 2/3 brick will have to be replaced soon....we can worry about center in 2016 If Harvin stays or goes we should still draft WR in round 1 (Cooper if avl) unless we can trade down grab an extra second and add Coates.
I mean I feel wat your saying but why not feed the positions of need first. Im all for spending but don't get it wrong, with a good QB our WR core is already solid when u add Amaro to the equation. Add DT & cut percy if that's the situation. Don't forget about Amari Cooper if overhauling the WRs is what we wanna do. He should be there. But even then we don't need that much as bad as we need a QB.
Colon has had a surprisingly very good year at pass protection. Much better than Breno, Winters or Aboushi. Even more surprising to me though, is that his run blocking is not rated good this year at all. This is atypical of Colon, where those ratings would usually be reversed, with pass avg and run very good. We have a few young guys to battle for 1 G spot. To upgrade the line, i think bringing in a good FA G makes a lot of sense at this point. i would also draft an OT to immediately start over Breno, while providing a long term plan for LT.
Colon and Giacomini are both drive killing machines. That alone would lead me to cut both their asses at the end of the year and go get a damn street free agent than can actually perform a block without holding. We'd be money ahead in the long and short term! Giacomini is one of Idzik's worst acquisitions that no one talks about.
We HAD a "good" QB in Vick and he was no more productive than Mr. Smith was. I think we definitely need an upgrade in pass protection and speed--still--in the WR corps. Putting everything on the QB when the WRs can't blow the top off the defense and the line mostly can't hold protections for industry standard lengths of time ignores the root causes and blames the wrong position. We've have three recent starting QBs and every one of them has played better somewhere else, either immediately before or after they start for the Jets.
I think building OL thru free agency is one of the hardest things for teams to do. It all comes down to the OL coach and skeem.
I can agree with this. It's a crying shame JI crapped the bed on ALL of our O-Line drafted players. The jury is still out on Aboushi but Winters was an unmitigated disaster. With 12 picks Idzik had a better shot of drafting a few lineman as opposed to pissing 3 picks away on receivers who will never contribute.
Jets did it back in 2008 when they signed Faneca and Woody to go with our elite o-linemen at the time in D'Brick, Mangold, and Moore. It can be done.
You might as well tack Jay Cutler on to this list, although I wouldn't consider him talented. He just got benched for Jimmy Clausen. Signing Cutler would be the worst move of any in the last two years unless it's for about $4 million. Even that is too much for a 32 year old who can't get it done with top teir receivers and RBs.
He is be better than what the Jets have on the roster. Also, the guy gets murdered every game because of the poor offensive line play.
"He's better than what we have now" is not a good enough reason to spend money on the guy. He's going to be 32. He's a negative presence. He hasn't been able to get it done EVER. Why would you want someone like that in a year where we are probably going to start our search for a REAL long term QB? There's not a single justification for bringing Cutler in... ESPECIALLY at his current number. If you want to trade for the guy and pay him what he's owed then I hope you've never criticized a GM ever in your life.
