what if the top freak TE or WR isn't available when the Jets draft in the 1st or 2nd, and the WR and TE they target afterwards will still be available later in the draft? but a stud defensive player is available that won't be later? those are two different scenarios -- wanting to draft a freak TE and WR is a specific goal, and claiming we need to go offense is a broad strategy that ignores every other factor. it is either meaningless to declare we need to go offense, or a bad strategy to select players just because they are on offense regardless of other factors, and that is what the statement "we need to go offense" entails.
Draft a receiver and sign a solid free agent one. Erik Decker and Dri Archer are doing well in my madden 2014 season.
This draft is pretty heavy in terms of play-makers. We should be able to find viable options at WR / TE / RB.
The 2014 free agency class is heavy with skill guys it's one of the best looking free agencys in recent memory, also I find it intresting when looking at the free agents for next season the Ny Giants have about 20 free agents most of them being starters. Back to the Jets, between The Draft and Free Agency this team will be a legit contender next year if Rex doesn't get fired and Idzik makes the right moves
I agree with you to an extent and did not claim that we have to draft a WR/TE in rounds 1/2 regardless of how we rate them. That would be really stupid. A team should always focus on the BPA to avoid reaching for players just to fill need, but I see no reason why a team can't also focus on need when the need is painfully obvious. If BPA is a DL, should we take him and pass on a WR/TE who you rate just a bit below the DL? All things being equal or even close, I think you have to take the need guy. More ridiculous, should the Colts take a QB in round 1 if they believe the QB is the BPA? Under your thinking, you always take the BPA. Finally, you don't have to draft the BPA. If the BPA doesn't fulfill a need in the draft slot and there's a guy you like a bit later, you can trade down and accumulate picks. The same can be done to move up, but I think our team needs are so great that we should avoid doing that.
Yeah, if the best player available is an outside linebacker, I say we trade down and get an extra second round pick. We'll have 3 compensatory picks which I think come after the 4th or 5th round, plus Tampa's 3rd round pick (unless they cut Revis before next year's training camp, which I can't see happening, but if they do it becomes a 4th rounder), plus all of our picks. If we do well enough to keep Rex, that means that either Smith or Simms did enough to show that he can potentially be the quarterback of the future, and therefore we don't have to trade up for a QB in the first round. In that case, we'll also keep Marty, and so I would go for a WR who came from a big school that runs a pro-style or close to pro-style offense, who has good hands and runs his routes well, and hopefully is on the big side. He should be someone who'll be ready to contribute from Week 1, not a development project with the potential to be great 3 - 4 years down the line. We could also trade down in the first round, and if we do that we'll end up with 1 1st round pick, 2 2nd round picks, and 2 3rd round picks (!!!). (The 2nd round picks are ours plus the team that traded up in the first round, and the 3rd round picks are ours plus Tampa's 3rd that they traded last year for Revis along with their 1st round pick in 2013.) With 5 picks in the first 3 rounds, and 3 or 4 of those picks going to WRs and TEs, and our O-line, as long as Smith or Simms is decent, we could actually have a very good offense next year and be dangerous on both sides of the ball (with a Rex Ryan defense.) And then, we still have lots of other picks in the middle and late rounds (because of the compensatory picks, plus keeping our own picks) so we should be able to find a couple of good or solid players there as well. If we go into the 2014 season with another bottom-5 receiving corps, then we screwed up the 2014 draft. The Jets need playmakers in the offensive skill positions.
You have to let the board play out Free Agency fills needs Draft stocks talent Our boards is going to be filled with top talent and needs the scouts and Idzik will make the right choice Remember no one wanted Sheldon when we picked him and now look Going off need we'd have a different player at 13
Howard, Colon, Ducasse, Cumberland, Winslow all FA's. Holmes will be cut. Depending on how some of those FA's play this year, we might bring a couple back. I'd keep it BPA round 1, but Oline and a 2 way TE would be my top priority. WR, OLB, S, C/G hybrid, and RB are potential mid round targets, along with FA pickups at those positions for competition. I also would love to draft a Punter maybe with one of the comp picks this year.
I expect Idzik to address a lot of needs in FA in a similar way to this past year w/ perhaps one prime big name either at WR(glaring need) or safety(Cheap). We'll go into this coming draft thinking BPA. Which is the right call. Early indicators suggest a lot of top prospects will be at long time positions of need including WR/OLB & TE. At that point it's pretty simple..just take the best guy. We're looking at having a much stronger, deeper team next season. This year is about the building blocks.
Richardson in hindsight was a good pick, I was on board. Millner was not and it should of been an offensive player. If we have a successfully draft next off-season and Geno shows flashes of being a good QB, we'll be in a prime-time spot for the next decade.
Unless Ducasse/Howard completely flake out & don't get re-signed..i doubt it. The one spot that will be open along the starting 5(Health permitting) will be Colon's. I'd expect Winters & Campbell to compete for that starting spot.Perhaps another draft pick and/or a cheap stop gap veteran.
I feel like someone is going to overpay for Howard. Colon probably won't be back and there is no way to tell what kind of player Winters is going to be. Ducasse has progressed very nicely over the last couple of seasons so we should be good there. By spend big, I meant we may overpay for a tackle or guard next offseason.
if ivory was that good, saints would have kept him. goodson has been a great signing so far....not! better to use the draft and save a lot of money.:metal:
Obviously there's more that goes into that statement. There's certain scenarios where you have to throw out trying to go offensive heavy. I think the main point that people (at least I am), are trying to say, is that this team needs to improve the offense significantly this offseason. The best way to do that? Through the draft. I think it has gotten to the point where we have needed a serious talent infusion on the offensive side for many years, and now I just dont think this team can move forward without it. This defense should be a top 5 defense. The offense will struggle to be in the low 20's. Its clear what side needs the help. If the draft comes, and theres a defensive player that is significantly higher rated than an offensive prospect, then they'll probably have to go defense. There's also the possibility of trading down into a range that is more suitable for that offensive target... This team needs to surround whatever QB is behind center with talent. Geno will not develop into his full potential with the current supporting cast.
Its time this franchise brings in a top receiver. Whether it be through free agency or the draft, we need that target that is a real #1.
I am not giving up on Hill, but having another WR to compliment him would be great. Whether the best available talent is tall or short is irrelevant to me. Not sure at this point whether I would put 'good hands' in the same sentence with Hill. I like his intangibles, but his drops are troubling. I would take a guy like Cotchery all day, not a burner, but a great route runner and great hands. Some people mention Braylon's struggles when he first came into the league to what Hill is experiencing now. For me, the big difference is that Braylon put up amazing numbers his JR and SR seasons in college, Hill never came close to that type of production. I know the system at GA Tech wasn't conducive to big #'s from their WR's. I am not giving up on him yet, but if the opportunity presents itself to draft/sign a WR with similar physical attributes as Hill the Jets have to pull the trigger...
