This, he took a team that had won 49 games, lost a tough 7 game first round series, improved the roster in the offseason, and only got 44 wins (in a joke of a east) and a series victory against the raptors. Kidd got so much credit because he turned around a team that start 10-21.....but who was the coach that got them in that hole? oh wait.

Should have kept PJ, if they had ended up playing the Heat, ya think he might have made a few phone calls to his old organization? I think they coulda pushed the Heat farther, hell they had multiple games with decent leads and they lost em all because they were inefficient down the stretch.

The man just needs to sign a 1 year deal with the Knicks for whatever they can fit him in for then he can get a max salary after 2014-15 for however many years he wants :D

Pretty stupid move by the Bucks to give up anything for Kidd.

Kidd might've gotten fired by the Nets anyway.

Not sure if you're serious, but in theory these things could work, but the problem is that it would be against league rules to put it in writing. What if LeBron got injured and then the Knicks changed their minds?

There have been a lot of these under the table deals where the teams promised one thing (which couldn't be put in writing) and then didn't hold up their end of the bargain.

Evan Roberts is doing a good job right now voicing how I (and seemingly other fans) feel about this. He's really ripping Kidd.

One interesting thing he said is that Mark Jackson and Steph Curry are tight, and Curry is a FA in two years. So, there's that.

But it's starting to sound like Mark Jackson won't be the direction the Nets are heading.

Yeah, I don't think any agent would let him get around that injury risk concern either even if he were willing. In terms of the Knicks the cap space opening is 1 year too late for LeBron, unless by some act of god they can move Stat & Barg in exchange for low salaries

Maybe it's just because I watch the Spurs closely and don't pay attention to the rest of the league that way, but reading this thread it seems like there are potential disasters happening all around the league right now.

Exactly-- his expertise--if he has one--is what's going on ON the court. What makes him think he's got the abilities, experience or contacts to be a GM and build a winner now? Especially in such a crappy environ.

    Maybe they're going to move?

Which is even more positive that he left considering he WAS a star PG, yet he couldnt get Williams going AT ALL? Williams did not even have a single decent game in that Miami season, players play but come on.

There is, especially if this Lebron story is true. I dont buy it, but if it is true, the Heat wont be getting another guy. Its going to be nearly the same amount of money, just distributed slightly differently. (Lebron getting the most now). They will be able to add a few guys but they wont be getting Lowry if this is true.

You do realize if one team gets fleeced others can get fleeced? It's not an either or thing, both is an answer. You do know the Nets gave up more 1st rounders for Pierce and KG than the Knicks did for Melo? Than the Clippers did for Paul? Than the Rockets did for Harden?

EDIT: You should look into the Melo situation more. The Knicks overbidded against themselves because of Dolan, but they were scared of letting Melo hit FA because of the impending lockout. With the lockout, they didn't know how their cap was going to be able to sign Melo outright to the max and what would happen if a sign and trade happened post lockout.

The Celtics won that trade and came out as robbers. The Nets made a win now move, they just spent their resources completely wrong. The team rides on Deron, Joe, and Lopez just like it did before the trade. I did like most of the other moves the Nets made in FA and flipping Terry for Thornton. But the trade itself, big losers. They, like the Knicks, didn't understand the full value of draft picks when making their move. They are much more valuable than either team considered in the past.

From an NBA standpoint I'm interested to see how that goes over within in the NBA coaching community. That's supposedly a huge no-no what Kidd just pulled.

Happens every year. You are a fan of a top notch organization so none of this is ever something you had to worry about over the last 15+ years for your own team.

Although this NBA offseason has been a bit crazier than normal with the Kidd stuff and all the opt outs and salary clearing for players that could just resign with their current team

Yeah, I mean that the FA period is really going batshit. But it's not like that activity never affects the Spurs, at least outwardly. You always hear about their interest in players.

But this FA period is like the kid getting stuffed in the airbooth and trying to catch as many flying 20s as he can.

Oh yeah I meant more the stars forcing trades, opting out, etc. It happens to the Spurs, but they are prepared salary cap wise for doing well in FA or doing poorly. They are never tied down to one plan or one player, and are set up well top to bottom.

They also are not publicly throwing themselves into any big trades which keeps them out of the "sweepstakes" like Love, Melo, Deron, CP3, Dwight, etc.

No the Knicks didnt have to give up a damn thing for Carmelo. They got fleeced worse, the Nets HAD TO give up something. The Knicks had to just wait 5 months and he was going to sign with them. Donnie Walsh didnt want to make the trade because he knew it was highway robbery, Dolan forced him into doing it because he wanted that superstar and not have to worry about not getting him. Walsh wanted to wait and had they waited they probably would have been more successful.

Back to the Nets though, you dont seem to understand why they made the move. Giving up future draft picks is worth it when you have a 49 win team ready to take the next step. The thing that happened though was Deron Williams completely fell apart or else the Nets might have had a real chance at beating the Heat. Heck its possible if Williams does get "healthy" (he was apparently injured badly all year), that the Nets do actually make a deep run next season. Kidd was questionable and made questionable decisions in the playoffs, one of which was cutting Plumlees minutes in half nearly in the playoffs. Plumlee was playing solid, yet Kidd didnt let him play in the postseason which is a shame.

Windhorst saying what he wrote in his article; no Carmelo for Miami, no Lowry for Miami.

The one thing I want to see though is this, Riley doesnt have to resign Wade or Bosh. Is it possible he "screws" one of them? Id take Lowry over Wade right now without hesitation.

I understand why they made the move, they thought they would become a championship team with PP and KG and they wanted the headlines of that so they overpaid big time for those players. What I'm trying to say is waiting is a move. It's a great move at times too and it would have been the great move here. When you have that ammo that can be used to grab a star, you don't overpay for two older players who are improving your depth at best. It was a move that grabbed headlines, created a self imposed championship window, and limited the Nets from improving and being involved in the big FA chase. It was a bad move and Boston robbed them. Even if they wanted KG and Pierce they paid way too too much for them. So I disagree with the move of getting them and then I also disagree at the ridiculous price they paid. Boston came out winners on the day of a trade because they had no leverage. KG and PP didn't really want to rebuild, Rondo was hurt, and KG had a no trade clause basically eliminating most bad teams. The Celtics didn't want that cap room on their books either so yeah Nets overpaid big time. They, like the Knicks, bidded against themselves, and overpaid. Billy King doesn't have a great rep as a GM and he got burnt. It happens, Danny Ainge is a great president/gm who has shown to be talented in the NBA FO.

Also go back and read about the Melo situation more. The Knicks should have waited in my opinion, but you are way off in what you remember. Walsh wanted to make a move for Melo, and was close to doing so. He was trying to drive the price from Denver down because Walsh and the Knicks had the leverage even though they were internally scared of Melo signing back in Denver for the max contract with the new CBA coming up. They were afraid Melo would take the short 2/3 year extension at max money instead of staying a FA in an unknown situation where his max salary could go down. The Knicks had leverage as Denver was afraid of Melo just walking for free. Then Dolan came in and didn't allow Walsh to bluff his way to a great deal. While in hindsight I think the Knicks should have waited it out, the Knicks, including Walsh, were internally scared they could miss their window on Melo. This led to Dolan basically calling Denver's bluff and giving everything to get Melo. Walsh lost his negotiating power and the Knicks got Melo. Go read up on it, you are completely over simplifying the situation thinking the Knicks could have just waited and gotten Melo. There was a real risk of that not happening within Walsh and the Knicks organization. The fear reached Dolan who panicked and rushed into a situation Walsh had control over.

You are trying to make this a Knicks vs Nets thing because for some reason you think the Nets getting fleeced vs Boston has some implication on the Knicks. It has nothing to do with it. The Celtics clearly won the Nets/Celtics trade, not even close. I understand why the Nets did it and they completely overpaid for it.
