If the Raiders gets DJax and someone like Manziel they are going to be a very scary offense.

Except for when Manziel can't read the field, runs out of the pocket and gets SMASHED by Demarcus Ware/Von Miller/Justin Houston/Tamba Hali. Except for those times

Treat them well, and let them lead the way. Show them all the beauty they possess inside, give them a sense of pride...

Yeah I thought the sarcasm was evident since we play them almost every season

That seems like the annual over/under for them these days.

They've brought in a lot of players, but most seem to be on the downside of their careers or the wrong side of 30.

Things have been bad, but don't forget they are still reeling from Al Davis' habits and the worst trade in recent memory, two 1st's for Carson Palmer. They signed some guys yeah, but this seasons draft will be a huge part of the future of that franchise. If they can't draft well, they will be in the 4-12 range for years. If they have a good draft, so much can change. It sure doesn't help that the Broncos, Chiefs, and Chargers (all playoff teams) are in their division.

I have to think the trade for IRG3 was worse, but both trades ended up in people getting fired.

    haha..

    1. Penny pinchers: For those not happy with John Idzik's conservative approach to free agency ... well, you may not want to read this. It will raise your ire to a new level.

Right now, the Jets have the lowest cash payroll in the NFL -- $86.1 million, according to overthecap.com. We're not talking cap dollars, we're talking actual cash spending for 2014. They're $50 million under than the top-spending team, the Baltimore Ravens. The paltry number makes the Jets seem like the New York Mets of the NFL.

the only difference is the jets are still in playoff contention halfway through a season.

Yeah, it's the other half that hurts.

Yep. Manziel is going to have to play out of the pocket well to succeed in the NFL. Designed plays that move him will be fine but if he's running around back there all the time like he did in college things will break down.

He's such a hit or miss player. Star or N-F-L and no way to know which it's going to be ahead of time.

Yeah that is a bs claim unless they do it for a number of years like the Bidwells did with the Cardinals. The Jets went from cap hell to penny pinchers in less than two years? Gimme a break. The draft hasn't even happened yet. Columns like that are written to get alarmists angry and it even says it:

The draft doesn't cost any money..those salaries are fixed now. Maybe 5-6M tops.

I was using the draft as a measure of time through the offseason, maybe I should have just said it's only March, but I have seen it said so much already and the idea still hasn't sunk in with some people that you don't only have one month to spend money in the NFL

I was thinking about starting a topic about this but I never started one and don't see why I should now.

What does anybody think that Coples trade value is? I don't think he is that good if a fit in the Rex Ryan defense and he could be a really productive player in a 43. The Jets have already talked about how they can find talent with trades and at this point I don't see Idz trading draft picks that matter. What if they went to say a team like San Francisco who likes to put their defensive linemen into the same gaps that 43 defenses do and maybe figure out a trade for Vernon Davis? He's in a contract year and the Jets could definitely afford to work out a long term deal for him.

I'm just using that as an example so I don't want to look like I'm proposing that trade but I think Coples showed enough in a bad fit to be strong trade currency. I don't think enough has been said about trade possibilities with this team even though Idz has made it clear that trades are a big option.

The Jets are trying to turn Coples into a Suggs/Ngata hybrid weapon in the front 7. They want him to be the guy who could be coming from just about anywhere on any given play and not giving anything up in the process. He's almost the perfect player to do this with because he will absolutely roll a RB/TE trying to block him and he'll dominate most guards when he's lined up inside.

I don't think he's going anywhere unless somebody really blows the Jets away with an offer they can't refuse.

Rex lives for players that he can move around the front and mess with QB's heads. He wants the QB to have no read at all on what the front is at the moment he has to snap the ball.

Watch Tom Brady as he walks up to the line against the Jets. His head is on a swivel trying to figure out what it all means and where the defenders in the front 7 are actually going to be a second after the ball is snapped.

The key word is trying. So far I haven't seen any progress with his ability to cover at all. He's a string pas rusher and he knows how to use his body to get off blocks but none of that really says he can be a hybrid.

The main point I am trying to make here is that from his comments Idz sounded like he considered trades more plausible than straight up FA signings and I know he is valuing draft picks so to me that means his trade currency of choice is probably existing players combined with low draft picks.

Coples was the best answer I could come up with on that respect

The Jets really dropped the ball with the Coples pick! I like him, I think he is okay, but me and a few others were on here pre draft and the night of saying that Chandler Jones was the guy who fits, and oh how true that was. When you bypass Chandler Jones to pick Coples as a pass rusher, clearly, it was an epic fail on the Jets' draft room decision makers last night. Lets not forget that when evaluating Coples ... Chandler Jones was there for the taking and sure enough NE pounced on him, so we will be dealing with him the next few years. :sigh:
