Not to mention all the Idzik homers saying he has a plan and have faith, isn't part of his philosophy to have competition at EVERY position?
lol. seriously though, this is how I see it - the controversy shit all came to a head because sancho was giving us benchworthy game. we had rex sticking him back in there and the fanbase hating him for it. the problem was that Tebow is a terrible qb and the coaches knew it would only be worse with him in there. The difference is that Vick is actually a serviceable QB. Bottom line, there will always be somewhat of a QB controversy/distraction here until we have a clear cut solid starter.

As it should be. If we have the QB of the future with Geno he should win the competition against an aging veteran otherwise he can sit and learn till the game slows down for him. I still think throwing a second round QB in as the day 1 starter last year was a mistake.
Do you know how many stories Michael Vick has in him for a writer next year? It's like the alternatives right now are Jason Campbell (snore), Shaun Hill (snore), Seneca Wallace (snore) or Michael Vick!!!! If you were a sportswriter with a daily deadline next year who would you want on the Jets as material to write about? The only guy that will give the writers more material than Vick is Mark Sanchez (headband) and it's not clear Sanchez would be worth more lines.
Because the Jets were already a circus with distractions up the wazoo before they got Tim Tebow? Bringing a high profile performer into what is already a loud unsettled situation is going to cause people to ruminate on the all the chaos going on.
The way Seattle did it was to settle on nobody until they were sure. They went through Charlie Whitehurst and Tarvaris Jackson in back to back seasons and then brought in Matt Flynn and Russell Wilson in 2012 and found their guy. 2010 - Hasselbeck out after season, Whitehurst on board for a look-see. 2011 - Tarvaris Jackson in, still looking at Whitehurst. 2012 - Matt Flynn in and Russell Wilson in and they found him. Jets 2013 - Mark Sanchez out, Geno Smith on board, Matt Simms in the background. 2014 - ? 2015 - ? I tend to think the Jets will give Geno a long look this year and if they like what they see (pre-season) he'll get the starts. I also think they'll have somebody on board who if they don't like what they see out of Geno he's on the bench and the guy is getting reps. If Geno is not the guy and the other guy is not the guy then in 2015 there will be two new young faces in here competing for the job.
I love this philosophy, keep bringing em in till you find your guy. Alex Smith gone Kap in, Flynn out Wilson in..... We learned how sitting on a guy till he gets better worked out.
In Seattle, each year there was a completely new depth chart at the QB position until they drafted Wilson. Geno has to show marginal improvement to show he's the man. If he shows marginal improvement he will win the starting job out-right in my opinion (even if Vick looks good in TC). If Geno fails to win the job, he will be in the same position as Whitehurst in 2011. If the Jets are picking high next year, they will draft a QB in the first round (along with a new coach). There won't be a competition.
My point being (keep in mind I am not necessarily a non believer in Idzik) is that some of the same people that are praising Idzik's philosophies on free agency and the draft are against his core philosophy of signing a free agent QB that will legitimately compete with Geno.
The problem with Vick is that he maybe solves the immediate problem this year but he doesn't resolve any issues long-term. If they bring Vick in I see it as a move to bolster Geno not knock him down. If Vick knocks Geno down where are the Jets in 2016, the year they want to win a Super Bowl?
Everyone is forgetting about Aaron Murray cause of his knee injury. Grab him late. I coached against him when he was in high school, he was the best throwing talent I ever saw in high school. I'd love to give him a shot.
Be interesting to see how he does in his pro day in April but I still think AJ is a better later round prospect. Tough call
I think Murray is a very good prospect to take a shot on. He's small but he's good at just about everything he does and the sum of his parts is better than any single part. He'd be a good later round take.
