Absolutely. All depends on the amounts. If we follow through cutting Holmes and Sanchez, we will have over $50 million in cap space. That's a ton!
It is possible but we would have to spread money over future years. Once we get done cutting Sanchez and Holmes we will have $50 million in cap space. Take $7-8 million off that for rookies with an estimated 12 draft picks. Take another $10-15 million off that for spending money. Most teams like to have some reserves in case an opportunity arises to grab a player they love or to carry money to carry into next year.Idzik coming from a conservative type philosophy I would guess $10-15 million cap space would be a minimum amount to carry into the season. This leaves us with a realistic spending money of $30 million. Now where does that money go. We almost certainly have to use it resign Howard or a replacement, we should also sign a guard, we will sign a CB, a WR, a QB probably a safety, and maybe a TE and maybe another RB as we have been linked to Tate. Lets add this up. Howard at 4 million, Asomaoh would be other 4 million. That already drops us to $ 22 million with 4-6 players left to sign. Vernar will be around $9-10 million and Byrd $10 million. TE, and B.Tate would be cheap. A WR like G.Tate or Sanders is another $ 6 million. Which may be why we have been linked to Hawkins. Add in $2-4 million for a back-up QB and the money goes very fast. Is it doable? Yes. Is it realistic? No. We could burn into our extra spending money or into future years caps but this seems to violate Idzik's philosophy. Realistically we can buy one very high priced toy. Most likely a CB. Then invest in some modestly priced toys. We get more bang for our buck buying a guard, TE and RB as they come cheap. The WRs seem overvalued and risky investments. It will be interesting to see how much he spends on a WR and a real test of his money management discipline. What I really like here is who we have been linked to. Verner, Asomoah and Tate. All players who very young with lots of upside. A nice change from signing people at the end of their careers. It appears Idzik wants to spend money on players who we can build around rather than discard a few years later.
Rich Cimini @RichCimini ยท 2m The Jets will have $12.8m in "dead" money if, as expected, Holmes and Sanchez join Cromartie
Right on the money. Well said. Idzik will not go money crazy but rather he will be selective and strategic. Youth and immediate contributors that are good value will be his focus. For the major investment is someone like Verner or Byrd but not both. With Cro gone, it seems clear CB has the edge here. I think Verner will be No. 1 priority for us. OG, S and or OT next. I'm a huge proponent to build the OL to a higher talent level. We were marginally effective against the better Ds. With an iffy QB still learning the ropes, that is a formula for a disaster both as a running or passing team. Curios about WR. Few options there but unclear as to what type they might be looking for. Some of the names mentioned are clearly an upgrade but no Stand out No. 1 will be available. We need the draft to help us there and may be develop someone like Lee if we get lucky at 18th. Not clear why we would go depth on RB unless they think Goodson is a no go for non football related issues. The back up QB position is tied at the hip with Sanchez release. We will have to wait and see[/quote]
So Jones drew and Sproles are on the jets radar... I know for some any Running back even CLOSE to the age of 30 might as well be taken behind the barn and put out of their misery, but I'm thinking either will bring fantastic value to the jets backfield receiving game. Youth Youth Youth isn't always the answer, sometimes an over 29 vet with something to prove can bring just as much if not more to the field than a "youngen". Sproles has my vote.
Jason Campbell expected to be released according to Rotoworld. Probably worth considering as a veteran QB
I remember liking Hill back when he was starting games for the Lions, but in the past three seasons he's thrown only 16 passes (0 in 2013) and hasn't started a game. That's my concern with him, but he's certainly a decent option nonetheless.
I'd be receptive to Hill, as well. I just hope it doesn't come at the expense of taking a QB in the draft if a promising one is available in the middle-late rounds.
Vontae Davis deal to resign with Indy should be completed by Monday according to multiple sources. Another corner off the board.
If the jets can sign verner asamoah and sanders I would be a very happy camper. Then look at second tier free agents at positions like back up QB TE depth and safety I will be estatic.
Who do you like that is a better option The FA pool of wide receivers is petty thin I think if we can get an upgrade from Hill we did our job in FA. Shouldn't be too hard, but the draft is where we will find our future at receiver
Cap issues are part of it. They have a lot of money tied up in Antonio Brown. They also drafted Markus Wheaton in the 3rd round last year and are expecting him to step into his shoes
Absolutely, I was hoping Campbell would be available eventually ... Get this guy Idzik! - he would be much better then Hill or Vick!
I don't like any of the free agents..if decker was reasonable i would take him..or nicks ..I would stay away from sanders/ Tate..just my preference
The steelers are in cap hell. They were about $1M OVER the cap at the start of free agency before they got brown to restructure to free up $4M for this year. They tendered him last year and matched the Pats offer to keep him around. The Steelers would love to keep him around but simply cannot afford it. He would be an excellent addition to this team but it really depends on the price. I see the offers being low to the FA WR this year because of the incredible draft class at the position. I'm just happy that, from looks of it, Decker is not on their radar.
Despite the speculation with Verner to the Jets I don't think they'll make the moves to sign him. With Davis off the board now and the deal that Grimes just signed I think Verner's price tag is gonna sky rocket. I don't see Idzik paying over 10M a year for the guy. He had one big year and had a hot start but really cooled off at the end of the year. I would rather the Jets take a look at Rodgers-Cromartie 0r Munnerlyn at better values. CB's are getting overpaid right now with what the Seahawks just did and the fairly weak draft class at the position. Also depends on what Rex wants to do with the scheme.
