You are implying the Jets cannot find a starter in the lower rounds. You can find value in the late rounds. Didn't the Seahawks grab Sherman in the 5th round? How many un-drafted players become good players in this league? All you need is an opportunity in this league. The off-season isn't over. It doesn't end in Free Agency, this could open the door for Wilkerson and Kerley extensions as well don't forget. We don't need to spend every dollar. Who knows maybe we have a strong draft this year, make the playoffs this year, then all of a sudden a big time FA comes around next season that could instantly make us contenders. you will be happy we didn't spend all of our money.
Ftr when i said last year at this point, I meant at this point last year. Concededly Holmes was coming back from injury, but he did come back, and most here expected him to at this point. He got reinjured during the season, and Kerley was hurt mid-season. At this point last year Cro had not exhibited any signs of a bad hip, either. The point is injuries happen, and in assessing the 2013 roster at this point to right now, how many current players will lose time to injuries during the coming season? At this point last year, who here, even Holmes Haters, would have said Decker was an upgrade over Holmes? I like the move now, but is it really an upgrade year to year? There's still no RG on the roster. Cro right now is gone, with no replacement. I am no Sanchez fan, but last year you had Sanchez, Smith as a rookie, and Simms not even on the radar, which was not good (McElroy was #3). But this year right now it's only Smith and Simms. There isn't even a third Qb on the roster. Mangold, Ferguson, Harris are all a year older. I forget when the picked up Dawan Landry, but who are the starting safeties? Even if Allen is one, can we say right now that he's an upgrade? No, it is not the least bit unfair to say right now the roster looks worse than this time last year.
Don't be so sure. The only reason we missed a wildcard spot last season was because Justin Tucker hit a 63 yard field goal. A Jets team with an actual offense would have been in the playoffs. The Patriots are currently getting worse imo. With a good finish to the offseason via free agency and the draft and we COULD compete for the divisional title. and a good spot in the playoffs. Wildcard should be expected if not better.
A lot of people bring up Asamoah and I would have liked to have landed him also. I just don't they just ever had a chance, Pioli originally drafted Asamoah when he was with KC and now that he is with Atlanta that gave them a big advantage in getting him to sign there.
Lol we didn't even offer a contract! “@MMehtaNYDN: Jets had several discussions with TE Brandon Pettigrew. One of 3 teams in mix. However, they never made a formal offer, per sources #nyj”
I never said they cannot. But you are implying they will. THe Pats found Brady in the sixth round. So that means if we pick a Qb in the sixth round, he will be the next Tom Brady. Yay! Kerley And Wilkerson extensions will not take up more than a fraction of the available cap space. That fraction will get smaller once Sanchez is cut. I know the off season isn't over. I said right now compared to this time last year. In order to salvage this off season, the Jets will have to make more positive moves than they did from this point forward last year.

How does that point counter what I am saying??? Do you know who is going to get hurt this coming season, or more to the point that no one will, at least no one "important"? There's no reason to think the current roster will have significantly less injuries in the coming season compared to last year.
If you are talking with his agent and the agent is saying he wants $4M a year and you know you only want to go to $2.5M why would you bother making a formal offer. It would be a waste of time. They probably talked, bounced some numbers, saw it wasn't going to come together and saved a tree by not writing up a useless contract.
I get that.... I'm just thinking all those reports that he was going to be a jet.... And we never even offered a contract! 4 mil a year for Pettigrew is too much in my opinion. I'm impressed the Izdik generally has everybody making shit up because nothing gets out of his office!
The Wilkerson extension could cost us a nice penny, also think of the other players we need to resign in the future. My point is to never think we can not get value in the later rounds. You don't need high draft picks to find starters and have a successful draft. Kerley was a 5th round pick. Jets don't need to break the bank as I mentioned before, I do think they need to shore up a few holes via FA. This could occur after the draft. They don't need to sign anyone today.
Who is talking about breaking the bank??? THat is pure nonsense. WHen Sanchez is cut, the Jets will have @$40mil in cap space. And on your point what does later round picks have to do with cap space? You seem to be implying the Jets freed up cap space to sign a bunch of draft picks. That is obviusly ridiculous.
We have plenty of pretty pennys..ugly ones too..if you think we have a lot of cap room this year wait till next year when we only have 41 roster spots taken, no dead money and 67M in cap room based on the estimated 150M cap. We don't have to worry about extending anybody at this time. Oh, and that doesn't include any carry over from this year because our GM can't figure out how to spend what we have now.
Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter 1m Steelers WR Emmanuel Sanders now scheduled to visit SF on Saturday after spending today in KC.
I looked at this offseason as a chance to fill a lot of holes with starters via FA, while continuing to build our future through BPA in the draft. FA isn't over, so I'm not going to overreact, but it's hard to not feel just a little disappointed. Areas i was hoping to address: 1) Upgrade the Oline, or at very least retain continuity Asamoah and Schwartz were 2 intriguing options that signed for very reasonable amounts. They would have helped. I think the best fall back for G is Colon at this point. Howard i wanted to resign, and we lost him on guaranteed money (which was a bit too high). I don't believe Breno is an upgrade, but its a decent signing. Even if you believe Breno is a lateral move with similar upside (which i don't agree with), its still a downgrade due to breaking the continuity of the line. Overall, even if we resign Colon, our line did not upgrade. I believe drafting an OT is a very high priority now, and possibly a G as well. 2) Improve the secondary Revis was the guy for me there. 12M was the right price, we could afford it, and it's a tremendous need. That move would have vastly improved our D. To top it off, he's with the fuckin Pats. Davis got paid way too much, so no loss there. Clemons would be a nice move, and i haven't heard anything. Cro + Browner, or maybe even Brown or Thurmond would also help. we'll see. until we make a move, the secondary has regressed. 3) Upgrade receiving weapons I'm ok with the Decker move. Hopefully we can still get Jones. Pettigrew I've been advocating for all offseason, and the price was about right (although 3.5M per is what i was looking for). Sproles deal was completely reasonable, and was probably the best move we could have made. Would really have helped Geno out. McCluster also a nice speed mismatch and ST contributor. we missed out on a couple there imo. 4) get in a veteran QB to compete. book is still out on this, as only McCown really has signed to a team. really hoping its not Vick though. So it's not over. We shall see how the rest shakes out. As of right now I'm disappointed. Signing James Jones, Clemons, at least 1 of those CB options, and some sort of TE would certainly help. Also resigning some of our old vets, like Pace, Colon and Cribbs should be on the table at this point.
