Here are some Tarheel flame outs, and I'm using Junc's theory which I think is silly, and since #1 seeds can flame out, why not #2 seeds? Results to follow.........
83.... A number 2 lost to 4 seed in reg final. 84 lost to 4 seed Indiana, who lost to 7 seed Virginia. Hahah MJ was on that team!!! Flame city baby! 85 lost to 8 seed Villanova, Cinderella. NC a 2 seed. 87 lost to 2 seed Syracuse. 88 lost bad to a 1 seed playing as a 2 seed 70-52 Arizona. 89 as a 2, lost to 3 seed. 94 lost to 9 seed, the biggest flame out ever! This was NC's best title team all the way around trying to repeat, with a loaded roster! Only Dean could fuck something like this up.....he did!! 97 Lost to a 4 seed in final four 98 lost to a 3 seed in final four 99 lost to a 14 seed as a 3 seed 01 lost to a 7 seed as a 2. 02 NIT? 03 NIT? 05 Beat a 16, 9,5,6,5, 1 seeds to win a title. Tough road huh? 06 3 seed lost to a 11 seed 07 as a 1 seed lost to a 2 08 as a 1 seed, lost by 18 in final four to a 1 seed after a week to prepare. Good job Coach! 09 won it all by defeating seeds 16,8,4,2,3,2 in order. 10 NIT? 11 lost to a 4 seed in region final as a 2. 12 lost to a 2 in region final, as a 1 seed In 13 and 14 not even a top 3 seeding. By using a little more liberal rules, NC may be the biggest NCAA tournament flame out since its inception. Go Heels! NC may be a very early flame out this year. I remember Junc telling me a month or so back that this NC team is Final Four bound basically! Still believe that now Junc?
did you read what I wrote? not a good win a GREAT win. but yeah I never give them credit. duke is ALWAYS great in Nov/Dec. I'm nit worried yet, duke was supposed to run Carolina out of the gym last year too. How did that work out? Unlike duke Carolina teams get BETTER as the seasons move along. Roy plays a a million different lineup combinations and many more players than he will later in the year.
2 seeds can as well, if a 2 seed doesn't reach the elite 8 it's a failure. Bring on the Heels flame outs. I can tell you off the top of my head in the last 20 years. 1994 BC- BUT PG Derrick Phelps got hurt in that game on a flagrant foul which killed them. 1999 Weber State as a 3 seed in the 1st rd- ONLY 1st rd exit since Tourney expanded to 64 teams(duke has 3 since '07). 2001 Penn State as a 2 seed in rd 2 2006 2nd rd as a 3 seed 2007 regional final as a 1 seed that's it. 2012 they lost Kendall Marshall on top of a bunch of other injuries and had to play a 4th string freshman walk on in the sweet 16 and regional finals as their PG. now let's look at duke in same time frame: 1996: 1st rd loss(again) as an 8 seed(by the way, Roy has NEVER lost a 1st rd game) 1997: 2nd rd as 2 seed 1998: elite 8 as 1 seed 2000: S16 as 1 seed 2002: S16 as 1 seed 2005: S16 as 1 seed(noticing a theme?) 2006: S16 as 1 seed 2007: 1st rd as 6 seed 2008: 2nd rd as 2 seed 2009: S16 as 2 seed 2011: S16 as 1 seed 2012: 1st rd as 2 seed 2014: 1st rd as 3 seed
Go read the rest of your posts again my friend, not just that one post. Typical NC fan, you are. On numerous occasions you have said things like...."They have the refs on their side, their opponents weren't any good, blah, blah, blah..... Truth is, since the greatest coach in college basketball history took over in Durham, your Tarheels have become a 2nd place team in the ACC. Our rivalry keeps things close head to head, but our hardware in and out of conference proves my point. You said that your team is a Final Four contender in many posts, which is wishful thinking on your behalf. Plus, Roy boy has managed to get your school in a crappy situation off the court, which will become an excuse if you happen to flame out again? This years duke team is more complete than all your examples as "Duke flameouts". If they lose early they will be the biggest flameout of all Duke teams. Duke has had many issues with each year you posted as flameouts, but you didn't mention any of them, and you were very quick,as usual, to point out excuses as to why your beloved Heels choked. If Duke retained half of the players that left early in the 2000's decade alone, Duke doesn't flame out, ever. Your coach causes your flameouts game in and game out. Against Iowa for example, down 3, Roy boy doesn't even set up a play for a potential game tying 3pt attempt! Way to go! I'm glad he is the coach in Chapel Hill. How many times in the 2000's has Duke missed the NCAA tournament? Carolina? Your argument is futile Junc, futile!
Why didn't you bother to back up more than a decade from 1996? I will say one thing, I hope your Heels beat UK! I think coach Cal is a joke of a coach, but is tied into the mob to such an extent that he gets so many McD's all Americans. He sure as hell can't coach, and plays in a weak basketball conference. He cheerleads from the sideline, and the things he says in interviews and such are laughable. When he decides to leave UK, I would bet big money that the NCAA finds the school guilty of many fraudulent issues. He is a joke, and I wouldn't enjoy watching my team if he was in charge.
If this is going to be monopolized about how great UNC is or how shitty UNC is or how honest that program is or how fraudulent that program is or how they got screwed on a call in 1978 or how Duke didn't get screwed in 1982 then fuck I'll just start a new non-UNC/Duke/NCAA basketball thread to actually discuss THIS season and not stupid shit that happened in 1999 or 2002 or 2003 or 1978 or 2005 or 2008 or 1978 or 2010 or 2011 or 1982 or 2013 or 2006. Can we all just stop this shit? Syracuse cheated. And has had some really shitty losses. And the Big East sucked. And had recruiting violations. Ok, I'll concede it. So did Duke. And UNC. And every other program ever. Can we stop the bullshit. Please? _
Texas looked over rated, but I realize they didn't have their quarterback at Kentucky. For all the hype, UK looks mediocre. Their defense isn't that great on the ball, while their bigs just stand around in the lane waiting to jump and try to swat. They got smacked around on the boards early, don't know how it ended up. Neither Texas or UK can shoot for shit, cause it wasn't the "D" causing most of the misses. UK got a ton of calls, like the intentional foul and ensuing momentum swing there after in the first half. Their last two challenging tests are against NC and the Ville. Maybe Florida, but not much else.
Did I see this right? Rutgers scored 26 fucking points against Virginia the other night? Good gravy they are garbage
How about current basketball competition rather than guys sniping at each other in flame wars about historical bullshit and who was a bigger choker or cheated more or gets more calls because of who they are or were. It's boring. _
and this list is still nothing compared to duke's list in the last 20 years. losing to a 9 seed in rd 2 is the biggest flameout ever? that's bigger than losing to a 15 seed in rd 1? You bring up a blowout at Arizona. In '09 you lost to Villanova by TWENTY THREE in the elite 8. the same 'Nova team Carolina humiliated at the FF. and you were the higher seed unlike Carolina vs. AZ in 1989. go look up the 1990 National title game. 1983? losing James Worthy early hurt, in an era players didn't leave early(the rat wouldn't lose on until 1999 and guess what happened in 2000?) remember the fake back injury when his team sucked in 1994? you are bringing up what seed they lost to in FF? 1988: lost to 6 seed Kansas I could go on and on. the greatest coach who is afraid to play true road games and pads his sched every year to fatten his record. the coach who needed USA basketball to resurrect his career, the coach who faked a back injury and exhiled his former assistant, the coach who bashed players for leaving early and cons others into returning. What a coach, what a man! this duke team is different, I hear that every year. duke always plays great in Nov/Dec and Carolina does not. Roy develops a bench, K goes for the kill right away and his teams fade down the stretch- it always happens. Carolina had a poor transition after losing a legend in the early 90s and yet since they first missed in 2002 Carolina has more Tourney wins, more FFs, more titles than duke. you are going to use players leaving early as an excuse? duke didn't have one leave until after 1999, Carolina lost their first after 1972. Carolina lost an entire team after winning '05 title. you should brush up on your history if you are going to keep up in these discussions. Roy didn't get the Heels in any crappy situation off the court, he did nothing wrong and it was proven. Unlike duke and the sociology program the folks at Carolina wanted to know what happened and they paid for an investigation and Toy did nothing wrong. you enjoy watching K coached teams where it's a 3 pt shooting contest w/ flops. there is no more boring brand of basketball than to watch a duke game. flop all game, shoot 3's, K and family curse out officials- exciting!
Have at it. I pretty much don't even bother clicking on it it's become so tedious and predictable. Nice traditional Big East match up tonite with the Johnnies. Maybe I'll see if someone wants to discuss it in the video game forum _
The New Jersey Institute of Technology's win over Michigan as a 24.5 point underdog is the biggest upset in terms of the spread since 2007 (Gardner Webb +26 at Kentucky in 2007).
