System does play a role in it of course. Montana wouldn't have been as good in a Marino style offense, Marino wouldn't have been as good in a west coast offense approach. But regardless of the system you still have to have a QB that can execute it, and regardless of the system an accurate arm, quick release and the ability to read the defense are imparative.
Marino was a unique physical talent. He would have been successful for Bill Walsh. And in the modern NFL, 6 yards, 2-3 seconds and out is the order of the day. Beli was the first to realize it, and gave Welker 12 million dollars to leave mMoami, while the rest of the league went Huh?
Still have to get the ball to the reciever quickly and accurately, be able to read the defense and get rid of the ball quickly. That offense only works if your properly leading your recievers so they have a chance to make a play after the catch, that's what it's designed for. and then go over the top if the defense brings the safties in to cut the short passing game. You still have to have an elite type QB who has those 3 qualities. Any elite QB will be successful regardless of the system, but they're best in a system that makes the best use of their talents.
Seriously, it took only 13 days to forget? Fans are funny. We are a couple years away because after we find a GM, coaches and QB, our head coach will fired in 2013 so there goes another year.
They also had NE and Houston as one possession losses. Luck goes both ways. They were a few bounces from being 8-8 with this awful team. And you usually one game a year against a team where anyone at QB could win. The ARZ was that game for us. I agree playoffs are not likely and should not be expected. But I'm saying it's hard to just write off next year as shot and noncompetitive because we scrapped together 6 wins with this team, a semi decent QB could make us competitive in games.
Not really the same thing, I mean technically it's correct in that on any given day even the worst teams can beat the best teams on occasion. But not all one possession games are created equal. When I say there are two or three games the Jets should have lost. and it took a 63 yard Jets field goal. Jets basically go 3 and out, Dolphins drive and miss an easy field goal...basically the Jets should have lost that game on many levels but the Dolphins just played even worse. The Cardinal game the jets won 7-6 against a team that racked up a total of 136 yards offense. Any kind of offense from the Cardinals, any at all, and the Jets lose. I don't remember the specifics of the Texas game, but I do remember it wasn't as close as it appeared. The offense was stifled and only McKnights 100 hard kick off return made it look closer than it really was, Sanchez two interceptions pretty much sealed that. Admittedly the Jets could have beaten the Patriots that first game, but can you really honestly say the Jets were even close to being their equal?
Bring back a healthy Revis, and at least one of our safety's ... preferably Landry ... and we'll have a playoff level defense in 2013. Bring back a healthy Holmes and let Braylon be our #2 WR and I think we can have an offense that's at least in the 16-20 range --- IF we have anybody playing QB aside from Sanchez. He's 80% of our problem on offense. I really don't think we're that far from competing for a 2013 playoff spot in a weak AFC. We can win our share of games by playing good defense and not turning the ball over, but we can't do it with the worst quarterback in the league. If Sanchez is our QB next season, we have no shot of finishing .500
I put 2-3 years, if there was a longer option I'd have gone for that. Every season its the same thing, nearly. As another poster has already said, we fix our glaring needs '13 / '14 then Rex gets fired....back to square one....again. The problem starts and finishes with our owner who apparently wants to win more than anyone else He needs to let a GM and HC take full control and leave them to do their jobs, which might mean a few seasons more of SOJs, but we all know Woody loves $$s more than the pigskin. Very rarely do we see an NFL team change GMs/HCs and be automatically successful. Look at what's happening in Seattle. Right now all I see is glaring holes everywhere, next season we get Revis back, that's one taken care of (hopefully). Then we have problems at QB which won't be getting sorted this season or next. HB I'm not that worried about as there are always a decent supply. Genuine #1 WRs, Holmes is one on his day but am not convinced he wants to even be a Jet anymore, Bray isn't the answer at #2 either. Kerley in the slot is fine. Keller, Where did he go? There's another hole to fill. But my biggest fear is that we will not have a decent O line, as a unit this season, apart from the Bills game they've never looked like a cohesive unit. Just how long Mangold and Brick will go on for as well. I'm not jumping off the cliff, its where most of us live isn't it? But until Woody stops interfering and thinks more about football than money, then this cycle will continue.
Totally agree. This is a very hard poll question to answer because, although I think simply finding a competent quarterback would make all the difference in the world, the reality is that doing so is MUCH easier said than done. We are going to have to either expend a mid-round draft pick on an unproven prospect or take a chance on a veteran quarterback and hope that we strike gold (think Vinny 1998).
Matt Moore, inexpensive free agent who is dying to go someplace where he will be a starting quarterback after being unceremoniously dumped for Tannehill by Regis without even a chance in training camp... Solves the starting QB problem for 2013 and maybe longer without pissing away draft picks in a trade for a lesser talented and more expensive Flynn or any of the washed up retread choices like Palmer, Campbell, Vick or Young
There will be several teams looking at Matt Moore. Zona Tampa Jax Jets KC Probably more...his services wont come cheap!
imo if the Jets re-sign Braylon, add depth to the o line and upgrade the RB position, and most importantly upgrade the QB position, I think our offense would be solid. Just draft a pass rusher in the 1st round and we should be able to compete next year.
For me, the key is to be on the upswing as Brady is on the downswing. Brady will be 36 next season, and few QB's keep their level of play past 38 or 39. Brady might stick around till 40 or 41 considering the Patriots style of offense, but sooner or later the wear and tear on on a body takes it's toll. and speaking as someone who's long past the age of 40 who doesn't have nearly the wear and tear, starting around 40 the body just doesn't recover like it used to and things that never bothered us before start popping up more and more with each year. I know the Knee that I blew out in my 20's playing in a corporate league never bothered me after it healed until I hit my 40's, and I stopped playing in my 20's. (not corporate football but in a corporate baseball league, hit the bag wrong while trying to break out of a slide and run to third).
I wouldn't call what the Jets are doing a rebuild. Honestly, I am not sure what to call it. What I believe will happen is that if 2013 goes south, Woody will fire everyone from the new GM down and start over. At that point the Jets will be in a much better position with money and then will be in a full blown rebuild.
I'm guessing Woody is more realistic than that. Having GM candidates come in a long line and tell him the Jets are pretty screwed at this point has to be making a dent in his thinking. The odds are pretty good that he didn't completely understand the cap situation before he let Tannenbaum go. The two of them supposedly talked every day and I'm sure that right up until the end Tannenbaum was telling him it was no issue, just a little shuffling around of contracts to fix it. Then Tannenbaum goes and Woody starts hearing about the cap problems from other people and my guess is he's had an accountant do a study of the problem by now and he knows.
Which leads me to believe that Woody will promote Scott Cohen. That will be a PR nightmare but at this point, I think Woody sees the writing on the wall. The salary cap issue is a huge factor in the inability to find a candidate who is not only tasked with cleaning up a financial mess, but may only have short term job security.
LOL at anyone who thinks the Jets will be competitive next year. We have many free agents leaving, and very limited cap space to sign anyone. We will also have one of the harder schedules we've seen in a while. Where are you gonig to find a servicable QB? Even if you get a "servicable" QB, you're still not going to be competitive against the top teams. The situation is almost perfect for the team to struggle in 2013 in order to shed bad contracts and get one of the studs in the 2014 draft. If you're a smart fan, you'll understand that we need to let bad contracts expire, find a franchise QB, and find a coaching staff who knows how to develop a qb; and you'll be willing to be patient for a year (ask the Colts how that worked for them).
Cohen is not a bad choice if Woody has a plan that includes blowing things up after 2014 if the Jets are still off-course. 2013 is going to be a mulligan year unless the Jets somehow manage to go all-in despite talent and cap deficits.
In the salary cap era only one team has sucked for a franchise QB and then won the Super Bowl. That would be the Colts in 1997 with Peyton Manning. It took them a decade to win that Super Bowl. Look at the teams who win Super Bowls. The only one that has had a #1 pick and used it on a QB who then won the Super Bowl since 1994 is the Colts. It's a myth. You can't suck like that then draft a great QB and win it all.
