I hear you..and you are dead on. Not a written code of ethics. My pissed offness is speaking. At the same time, the media has come down on its own when a guy treats one team different from the rest and that team has chosen, rightfully so, to leave that reporter or media personality out of the loop. Because he has been out of the Jet loop, he choses to wrongfully attack that team. See, i dont think he is giving an opinion there. Really dont. Has he ever come down on any other team because a GM or coach would not tell him what they will do in the future? Who they will cut? They will not tell him if there is agreement inside Jet Camp over a pick? What team in the history of sports has ever come on any show or talked to anyone in the media and said "Yes...John Doe is on our roster now but we plan on cutting him June 1st" What team, unless in a joking manner or way after the fact, has ever told a media person "Yeah...people were throwing shit because we would not draft the person they wanted". What team would want that player who they took to know that. Its unheard of. Its journalism like I have never seen before. Its diifferent..much different than a guy that says Lebron is a terrible basketball player...or Brady has a weak arm. Those are opinions. Not sure if Im explaining this correctly but I have never seen a guy go after a franchisee to take it down...to try and take down a GM before he even is really starting. I would have more respect for him if he just said "The Jets treat me like I do not exist and I hate them...and will never say a good word about them..ever."
I'm about all speaking one's mind and making one's voice heard. But I think Chernoff would probably enjoy hearing rants from listeners (particularly Jets fans) because it confirms that Francesa is trolling successfully. And, to me, THAT is just as frustrating as Francesa's constant degradation of the organization. Yeah, I get what you're saying. This seems like it's kind of a grey area. When Francesa says things like, "The Jets have no identity" or "There's no direction for this team," it's still his opinion -- even if the Jets have an identity and direction that they won't declare publicly. He doesn't say things like, "I know for a fact that the Jets' draft selections were made by Rex..." because I think that would probably land him in hot water. It's too bad the NFL can't somehow involve itself by having one of its team's back, because the NFL is probably one of the few entities powerful enough to change anything regarding Francesa's attack.
yeah the Francessa stuff just gets more ridiculous each day.......the thing is he isn't violating any rules or ethics or anything, but what he is doing is ruining the listening experience for a good portion of his audience. That puts the average sports radio fan/ Jet fan in this area in a tough spot. A lot of us, but I'll speak for myself here...have WFAN as a habit at this point, there are other options but for some reason I still prefer WFAN. I'd love to stop listening if I though it would have any impact on the station's compensation agreements with him, advertsing agreements, ratings etc. Haven't been able to do that. I've gone stretches where I'd turn it off as soon as Joe and Evan were done....but lately have been listening to his rants because I just haven't turned the station..........I have to actually turn the radio down when any Jets subject comes up because I know they will be irrationally bashed no matter the topic......I'm trying to get back into the habit of switching to SIRIUS when Francessa time comes.
jon, its boggles my mind that the media..who hates this guy..doesnt take this and run with it because what could mike say? Mike, please tell us the GM who has been on your show the last 20 years and told you his plans for cutting a qb..or any player ever. EVER. Mike, can you please tell us a GM who has come on your show and admitted that the coach they have now hired will not be in their plans for next year. Please..give us one time that has ever happened in sports. A new GM comes on a show and says so far..he likes Rex and Mike freaks out...WHY? Why is he so upset by that. Is it because deep down he is a Jets fan and wants the team to do better? Why is it so important for Mike to get anyone to admit that Mark Sanchez might be cut? Has a team ever announced months in advanced their future plans? People that will be cut? Free agents? I seriously, this time, have no idea how he gets away with this hatred IN A TOWN HE WORKS IN. I can see him maybe getting away with it if he attacked the GM of the Rams on a daily basis. To me as a Jet fan and if I was a loyal listener, that would be equal to Mike shoving his fist up my ass on a daily basis. I have no idea how he gets away with attacking a team in the town he works for, wrongfully,on a daily basis..no idea.
And at the end of the interview..how did I miss adding this..at the end of the interview he says something like "He Mr Idzik..I would be careful putting your trust with those other two guys (rex and woody) Holy shit?! Has a media person ever warned a new GM about trusting the owner or the coach? Listen..whether you hate woody or Rex..and right now Im not big fans of either...when has a media person ever said that before to a new GM? HUH? Idzick was shocked and didnt even know what to say. Gee thanks Mike for the heads up?
Yeah, the parting shot was way out of line. Personally, I was most peeved during our Playoff run in 2009, after we defeated the Bengals and Chargers. The Monday ensuing the win at San Diego, he replayed the audio of Graham's and Kaeding's missed FGs, and then sarcastically praised the Jets' "Special Teams Defense." I think that that was the moment when it finally hit me how biased he is against the Jets -- and even worse -- how he can get away with bullshit like that.
Ok..agreed UB..but here is how you do it. You do not rant and call him a scumbag. You say things like "I love this station..really do...but after 15 years I just cant see myself listening anymore. The funny thing is I spoke to a few Jet friends who said they too have stopped listening the past year. I know this letter might not even get read but I just wanted your station to know we know whats going on here. Im sure you will not lose sleep tonite knowing me and some of my friends are not listening anymore....but in good faith a person in your position should at least look into why Jet fans are shutting down listening to Mike every month". Something like that. The important thing is that you are describing Mikes troll and unsuccessful. Just a thought..but at some point someone has to make a stand and say enough. Listen...the world has bigger problems than Mike F....just that we put on the FAN to get away from the circus of life..not to walk into another one.
Agreed. I was actually going to post something similar, as a suggested approach for the tone of the letter, to what you just posted. While you're at it, you should also write a letter to King Goodell; notify him that Francesa has been creating a very negative perception of the organization for the past 4+ years.
and one last thing for those that think their little vote doesnt count. ESPN went FM and the FAN went FM right after. The FAN said all the right things at the time..this was in the works blah blah blah..nothing to do with ESPN. Just because ESPN might not be mighty..it did take a bite out of the FAN. Mike might be number 1 but he surely does not have the same amount of listeners as he did 5 years ago..not even close. Thats how they get paid...not by being number 1. The number 1 guy overnight gets less listeners and much less add money then Mike does...but they go by overall..how many people are listening. Im would be shocked if the King has not been approached on how he is hurting the station with his actions. Problem is he is number 1 right now and they put up with it. Mike will fall ugly..thats a guarantee. Might be 5 years from now..10 years from now...or 2 years. ESPN will eventually with all their money put a proper package together to take him down. That will happen. All Im saying is do your part..lol.
I really like Pat Kirwan / Tim Ryan (or Jim Miller) on Sirius NFL Radio. Pat does a nice job of talking people off the emotional ledge. It isn't Jets/Giants like WFAN or ESPN Radio, but it's still pretty interesting listening. So, my drive home listening is usually ESPN or Sirius. I ignore Mike completely because I know it's so slanted. It's boring, I know what his opinion is going to be without having to turn the dial to him. I don't get why anybody listens to him at this point, much less how he's #1. I guess it makes you feel good about yourself if you're a Giant fan.
I don't remember exactly when Mike started hating on the Jets, but remember vividly in my mind, I noticed it the week leading up to and then following the Colts regular season game when Peyton sat in 2009. He hasn't stopped railing on them since. I remember he was scared shit the Jets might actually make the Super Bowl in the week before the AFC championship game he was already telling his audience that it doesn't mean anything to get to the Super Bowl, you have to win it. To me it started as a Rex thing, maybe a fat guy envy thing (Rex the jovial, rebellious arrogant, very comfortable in his own skin v mike the tight ass wannabe)......the Woody thing only occurred after as the organization smartly decided to not appear on his show anymore. I agree with the sentiment that writing intelligent letters to Chernoff explaining how loyal a listener you are, and how he's impacted your listneing hasbits might help. One caller actually did get some points across on Mike 2 weeks ago or so with some very well thought out and articulate questions and observations as to why he has such an irrational pov re the Jets...it was the only caller he couldn't sctream over and really couldn't give a good answer to.
Anyone ever listen to Dave Rothenberg (after Kay & LaGreca)? Just curious about peoples' opinions of him because he candidly states that he's a Giants fan, but he does talk Jets a lot.
First off, he had zero respect for Tannenbaum - he viewed him as the office flunky under Parcells. Second, he hates Rex - it's a blue blood, old-money thing.
When Parcells left, of course. And he stopped hating them when Parcells came. What does that tell you about him?
lol that's enough to make me avoid the interview entirely. I guess every other owner that's ever fired a GM is an untrustworthy sleazeball too, and every coach that was foisted on a new GM managed to get the old GM fired.
