yeah but Favre was a finished product we should have traded up for Matt Ryan Mangold, Ferguson, Revis and Harris>Gholston yes yes yes
New GM Candidates I know it's early but I don't think it's premature to say that we need a new GM who has a vision for this franchise. Also a guy who is a top talent evaluator and can build through the draft and free agency as other posters have pointed out. The way this season is going Tanny is most likely gone. So who are some of the top GM/Head of Football Operations guys out there that we could go after?
Kevin Colbert, but he's already the Steelers GM. I'd love to snatch Polian if we could. Rick Smith, Brian Gardner of Houston. Ted Thompson John Dorsey of GB. Just to name a few. Anything besides Tanny.
Agreed on Polian. He's one of the best to me. Some interesting other names you put out there, definitely all upgrades over our current GM.
If we can get an assistant from places like Pittsburgh, NYG, NE, GB etc. We need better talent evaluation.
I tend to agree. Look back on the last 10 drafts of the Colts over his years. The guy was riding Peyton Manning the whole time and sprinkled in a little Dwight Freeney,....but other than that - nothing else.
Eric DeCosta the Assistant General Manager for the Baltimore Ravens is a great gm candidate. He comes from a consistent franchise which is exactly what the jets need.
Ok...factoring in some of the things mentioned here as well as Br4dw4y5ux's list (you sir have got to be management of some kind) let me take a couple of stabs. I would, believe it or not, agree with the Mangini pick. He knows talent. Period. Can't coach em' for shit but he definitely can spot talent. He definitely falls into the age range as prescribed by Br4dw4y5ux but he does have history with us...something to consider. Depending upon what happens in Philadelphia this year I'm going outside the box and seeing if Andy Reid would be interested in getting off the side lines and entertain a GM spot. I think the death of his child really re-set some priorities for him and, from the water cooler talk, might be looking at his last season of coaching. Also a great talent guy. Steve Mariucci. Another top talent guy who was hamstrung by the piss poor ownership meddling of the Yorks and then that wasted log in Detroit. This was probably the worst coaching fire in the last 20 years. Bill Cowher. Another top talent guy who comes from the coaching ranks (are you seeing a pattern here?). I think Bill might entertain a GM position at this stage. Once you are away from coaching long enough the "juice" just doesn't flow as hot anymore. I think a top GM position in NY would be enough to feed his ego...if not, it was worth a shot. Finally, and I've not seen this floating anywhere, as I said, I'm thinking way outside the box now...Mike Westhoff. He is retiring from coaching this year, isn't on the young side, has history with the Jets but is young enough he could give us 10 years as a GM. He is just all about zero bullshit. He also has talent evaluating abilities. If he didn't he would never be able to annually squeeze top ST units out of the scrubs. I'll bet he would JUMP at the chance and personally I'd let him if he would accept. I want nothing to do with the Polians...their success is directly related to a once in a generation QB called P. Manning. Same with anyone, other than Mangini, coming out of N.E. Every one of their "offspring" has failed miserably...Pioli, Crennel, Weiss, McDaniels...the list goes on and on. B. Belichik might have been a hall of fame coach, from a defensive perspective, without T. Brady...but he sure as hell wouldn't be a hall of fame HEAD coach without him. In order I'd say interview like this: Mangini Reid (depending upon what shakes out) Westhoff Cowher Mariucci They are all football guys, former/current head coaches with proven track records of finding talent from all over the spectrum. I, personally, would keep Rex Ryan unless the GM wants to replace them. Just an opinion after thinking outside the box.
1. Finding the true thoroughbred HoF-prospect QB DOES NOT MATTER. Jets do not have qualified coaching staff to raise up the prospect, even if he falls on our laps. Peyton Manning didn't become what he is by doing it all himself. He had Tom Moore in his formative years. Same with Brady - he was cocooned in his first year and the subsequent formative years he spent with Belichick. Jets? Who do you pair the prospect with? Tony fucking Sparano? Matt Cavanaugh? If you ever thought they could help Peyton Manning become the world beater that he is, you are seriously delusional. 2. Jets scouting department seriously lack an eye for a playmaking talent. All of T-Bomb's good picks go back to Mangini days, except Wilkerson (the LONE bright spot.) Sure, Mangini did blow with Ghost once, but in general his draft picks panned out much more often than not. If anything, Revis is a play maker at the back four. 3. I would like to see the Jets seriously considering Dan Henning as the QB coach, if they plan to retain Sparano as the OC in the foreseeable future. (provided Henning wants to return in the same capacity - which I cannot guarantee, since he is up there in the ages too.) Finding a good QB coach (Fuck. I'll take Paul Hackett over that fuck Cavanaugh, for crying out loud.) and if they offload Sparano, good OC should be the next order of business, followed by capable position coaches. All in all, however, if Jets do go with Mangini or Cohen as GM, I don't know how either of them will work with Rex Ryan. That part worries me somewhat.
You still take the interview and feel the owner out. You basically have to lay your agenda on the table with the stipulation you will not accept the job without full confidence (our outside influence above) your decisions will be trusted and unquestioned. Also the owner must make the unwavering promise to provide the resources necessary and inexhaustibly for the GM to accomplish his agenda. If the owner cannot offer those assurances, the person interviewing should walk. Not just an accomplished GM, ANY GM candidate.
