Bruce Irvin at 15 is still pretty surprising

He also lined up at DT a lot because of lack of depth on the UNC roster. And if he was all about the money and no real football interest I doubt he would have stayed for his senior season after a 10 sack junior season. He has a productive career at UNC, and should be a nice player for us

It just hit me how ridicolously loaded this draft is, last years by this point all the great players were gone.

I watched film of him and a few games. The guy has pass rushing moves. He is also 11 picks after Gholston was taken. Gholston would bull rush people and thats it. He was a monster who could overpower everyone. Coples is far more talented. Before we just thought we could teach Gholston how to play football. Coples already knows. The 2 are not comparable at all.

“Here’s my deal with Coples,” Mayock said in response to a question from The Observer Wednesday at an NFL pre-draft event. “I’ve never liked his [game] tape [from his final season at North Carolina]. I wouldn’t draft him. But I do recognize the talent. He showed it at the Senior Bowl when he was motivated. I get nervous when guys have bad senior-year tape but great Senior Bowls. It tells me there’s a money drive there…. He’s a boom-or-bust guy. He can be an All Pro, and I don’t deny his talent… I just say ‘Buyer beware.’”

Rex just said Coples will line up at DE. Won't play at all at OLB for those that thought otherwise. What does this mean for DeVito? Sub player now?

Damn thats crazy. DeVito as a rotational guy makes us pretty good on the line. We are still so thin at LB though.

Rex obviously thinks he can take Coples and create pressure. That's enough for me.

The Jets will line up like this next year on 1st down:

    LOLB - Pace
    LDE - Wilkerson
    LILB - Scott
    NT - Pouha
    RILB - Harris
    RDE - Devito
    ROLB - Coples

That looks pretty solid and it looks like some real pressure from both the left and the right. No situational players either.

Ok so now we get to 3rd and pass and it looks like this:

    LOLB - Pace
    LDE - Wilkerson
    ILB - Harris
    NT - Ellis
    RDE - Coples
    ROLB - Maybin

Now that looks like a pass rush to me.

I was right somehow. Still really confused. But you gotta believe Rex knows what the deal is. He's been around the D-Line his entire coaching career.

I wasn't comparing their skill set, just their attitude. Sorry if the prospect of becoming a multi millionaire and being a very high draft can't motivate you then I don't know what will. There were certainly times last year when Coples was being beaten by OL who will be selling cars in a few months. A guy of his physical ability should have been dominant and he wasn't. He was good but nothing that would scream elite.

Coples will be RDE but I am happy for you being happy. One day per offseason isn't bad. Cheers, man.

Well, I'm glad you actually have an opinion based on watching him play.

I'm not trying to compare the two from a football player perspective so much, as you might be assuming that I am.

I am talking about the mental comparisons of the two. The mental aspect in the NFL is HUGE. We have seen time and time again players with all the physical tools in the world to be all-pro NFL football players but fail because of the lack of mental fortitude needed to succeed in this league.

For the Jets to take someone who had such a low motor showing throughout their senior year is something that should concern people.

I think the Jets should have been smarter with their selection and are taking a huge risk with Coples. Hopefully it works out very well and Coples just had a mental lapse his senior year and will be able to handle the mental aspect of the NFL and playing under such a huge microscope in NY.
