It was definitely WMCA. I was listening too - in Jersey. I wouldn't have remembered that until you mentioned the call letters. Thanks for the memory of "Islander Goal!" "Islander Goal!" You'd think Stirling would talk about those days now and then, but I've never heard him do it. The John Stirling character we have now doesn't even seem like the same guy.
thats the thing about the fat man, he doesnt even care that NOBODY cares about horse racing. there might be a couple moops who go out to yonkers every 3 days but they arent listening to fatso anyway. he likes it so he talks about it. people listen to him at this point because he was once the only thing on and they got accustomed to it. and wfan comes in nice and clear for a long long stretch, i can be in northwest ct and get it no problems.
I think the only reason he talks horse racing is to appeal to the people that are placing bets and gambling. IDK he always talks about how this is a baseball town, followed by football, and then Basketball and Hockey. Horse Racing is like 10th on the list yet he will spend hours on shows talking about it. He would prolly be better off talking about UFC, but I guess it doesnt really matter what he talks about, people will watch no matter what.
If you're listening to Francesa(or anyone) for sports talk you're probably a crushing bore, a retard or both. The only reasons to listen are to hear his kingly proclamations and laugh, either at him or the moronic callers. Francesa is actually at his most entertaining when he's out of his depth and has no idea what he's talking about. For example yesterday he brought up Downton Abbey for some reason as the show that has "replaced the Sopranos" and how all these people are watching PBS now.
Sterling was probably the only guy who did hockey with a habit of using the player's first name (i dunno, sounded kinda gay thinking about it in retrospect-lol): "Al's sent out the 'Banana Line'.....off the draw, won by the Islanders....John....over to Wayne....over to Bobby Ny.....back to Denny at the point....."
I think the bigger issue though is what other options do we have? its either Francesa or Sportcenter. Id rather watch a human being than a bunch of puppets that talk about tweets and top plays.
Jets, Yanks and Ders. My man, we are an exclusive club. Just glad we have the Yanks, would be a long time w/o a Championship if we were Met fans.
There are dozens of other options. There's this thing called satellite radio - Sirius/XM (sarcasm for those who don't recognize it). I got it four years ago and never ever listened to the fat man or Michael Kay or any other of these local morons again. It's NFL radio or ESPN radio or Fantasy radio or NHL radio or any live game (name the sport and its on) or Mad Dog radio. Anything but the fat man. I swore I would never listen to him again after he started his constant on air hatred of anything Jets in late 2009 and I have not listened to one second of the idiot since. If you want to watch sports on TV in the morning or afternoon, any ESPN station or the NFL Network beats a pompous fat no nothing any day. Or you can get a job and work afternoons like most of us do and only have to worry about the drive time (Sirius!).
Thanks for sharing. I wish I had a similar story but I picked my team from NFL.com website and from a few articles. My wife still makes fun of me for picking the Jets over Giants but I am happy with my selection.
Didn't Francesa used to own a horse or something? I always thought he did, which, I thought, would explain his propensity to discuss it on the radio, when no else does. Anyone know whether he owned one or not?
He did and still does as far as I know. The only times I have heard him discuss horse racing is right before a Triple Crown race or the Haskel or the big race in Saratoga for rookies or something. The only other time he will discuss horses is if some caller randomly brings up the topic or if some famous horse, jockey or owner drops dead.
Funny spoof of the Fat man on Jet Podcast http://turnonthejets.com/2014/01/turn-on-the-jets-podcast-mike-zaun-jets/
Satellite radio is the way to go! Especially since you can even get it as an app on your phone or device.
In keeping with this thread,,,,,,years ago I played ball in flushing meadow park,,,,a couple of times people were there with bull horns doing promos and giving away t shirts and other stuff,,,,,those were much humbler times for Mike and the MADD dog as the people were from Wfan and they wanted us to tune in to the radio station,,,,,incredible what a jack ass Mike has turned into !
