Let me clarify my opinion: Every year there are costant and costant talks about trading down from the first because the 2nd and 3rd rounds are where the "best value" is. I don't agree with that. I think Generally (depends on position of needs, number of players needed, etc), on a team with few needs, a low 1st rd pick is more valuable than say a mid 2nd and a mid 3rd. Because while it's true that it's possible to find good players in the mid rounds it's much more likely you'd be able to draft one in rd 1. And late 1st rd picks don't really get that much money. While it's true that if you're good and lucky you might be able to draft 2 good players instead of 1 by trading down I think our team already has a nice foundation and we need a 1st rd picks more than mid round players. If we were say the Denver Broncos my reasoning would be a bit different.
I understand where you're coming from. I have somewhat mixed feelings. Normally, I'm in favor of trading down, especially since the Jets have had so many 3-4 player drafts recently. They have numerous needs, including depth at certain positions. IMO they've been very lucky that they haven't had more serious injuries to starters, ala Green Bay last year or some other teams. We all know that this offseason they have needs at OLB, DL and S at a minimum, and possibly at CB (if Cromartie doesn't come back) and RT. With the draft coming before FA, it makes things somewhat different, and imo gives further merit to the idea of trading down, to try to address more of these question marks. That said, I'm not in favor of trading down in this draft, unless one of the following two scenarios happens. One, a team picking in the early to mid 2nd round blows the Jets away with a great offer to trade up to #30 that would include at least a 3rd round pick for trading up. Two, the Jets either aren't that high on Brooks Reed or Martez Wilson or any of the other players they think will be there at #30 and/or don't have them rated significantly better than Sam Acho or Jabal Sheard. I could get into it if they could come away with Acho or Sheard in the 2nd, two of Jarvis Jenkins, Kenrick Ellis and maybe KJ Wright in the 3rd and Jaiquawn Jarrett in the 4th, but they'd never get that lucky. Othewrise, I think they need to get the best possible prospect they can get at OLB or DL at #30.
Excellent news is right, Acho is one of my favorites in this draft. If we are successful in trading back out of round 1, Acho is one of the top 2-3 prospects I would hope we are targeting in a trade back.
Jets | Cameron Jordan expected to visit Thu Mar 31, 12:20 PM The New York Jets are expected to meet with University of California DE Cameron Jordan before the 2011 NFL Draft, a source told Adam Caplan, of FOXSports.com. Our view: Jordan reminds many in the scouting community of Raiders DE Richard Seymour. While not a sackmaster at Cal, he did show good strength against the run and versatility across the defensive line. He's not the most explosive off the line of scrimmage, but can get after the quarterback with a high motor. Rex Ryan knows how to build a defense, and Jordan would be a fine addition with the 30th overall pick. However, Jordan is unlikely to be on the board at that time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Louisville running back Bilal Powell is scheduled to visit the Miami Dolphins, Dallas Cowboys, Atlanta Falcons and the New York Jets, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation. Powell is set to work out for the Cincinnati Bengals in the middle of April. Powell rushed for 1,405 yards and 11 touchdowns last season and was named first-team All-Big East Conference. Powell injured his hamstring at the NFL scouting combine and his Pro Day workout. Powell had just 207 carries entering last season. As a senior in high school, Powell rushed for 1,960 yards and 26 touchdowns. At Louisville, Powell rushed for 2,338 yards and 19 touchdowns and he leaves Louisville ranked ninth on the school's all-time rushing list.
he is, but without the ability to trade players (not that we have anyone we really can trade anyways even if we wanted too, since all of our "tradeable" talent is currently unsigned (a second #1 WR, Cromartie and Harris). We can't get anywhere. I mean a third round pick moves us up what 3 spots? Jordan won't make it to 15 much less 25 or later where we could move up to. Unless we were to give up a #1 next year. Which is definately inadvisable.
I agree with you - if you look at depth charts and the rounds in which those players were taken the majority of a teams starters are made up on 1st round picks and UDFA's - there are generally very few 2nd round or 3rd round picks in the mix. I know that teams are less likely to give up on a first rounder because of the investment they have made but even so there are more late round/UDFAs starting on a team than there are 2nd or 3rd rounders.
Kenric Ellis is scheduled to visit the New York Jets Hampton defensive lineman Kenric Ellis is scheduled to visit the New York Jets, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation. Ellis is also among the Pittsburgh Steelers' official visits. He has previously worked out for the New England Patriots. Ellis is also is drawing serious interest from the Philadelphia Eagles, Denver Broncos and the Green Bay Packers, according to league sources with knowledge of the situation. The 6-foot-5, 346-pounder has drawn second-round grades from several draft analysts. Per a source, Ellis interviewed well at the NFL scouting combine and was accountable for past transgressions that got him dismissed from South Carolina (reportedly failed drug tests) before transferring to Hampton and being suspended for one game. "We like the kid," an NFL source said. "We were impressed with him." Ellis addressed the off-field problems at the NFL scouting combine during an interview with a crowd of media. "I had character issues," Ellis acknowledged. "I had disciplinary problems. They did everything they could. It just didn't work out for me. I had to get out of there. "I had to look within myself and change a lot of things within myself and around me. And after I changed those things, it was pretty much easy after that. I had to realize that I had a problem, and I confronted it and overcame it." Ellis said he wasn't allowed to play in one game due to a paperwork issue. "I had NCAA violations, not even violations," he said. "I had to get some things clear with the NCAA. I didn’t have my paperwork in on time. So I wasn’t necessarily suspended. I just didn’t have my paperwork." Ellis declined to elaborate on what happened at South Carolina, but addressed the issues with NFL teams. "Be honest and upfront, that's all I could do," Ellis said. "Make everything transparent. Be honest, and hopefully it will work out. "Being that I went through those things, I feel that I have grown and I have matured into a different human being. Where I was three years ago,m definitely not anymore. I feel like I'm a grown man." As far as specifics, Ellis didn't want to get into details. "I had disciplinary issues," he said. "I violated team policies." Ellis boosted his stock with a strong showing at the NFLPA All-Star game formerly known as Texas vs. the Nation. He played all of last season with a high-ankle sprain, displaying his toughness. At the combine, Ellis ran the 40-yard dash in 5.19 seconds with a 1.64 10-yard split and bench pressed 225 pounds 26 times. In addition to his motor, what else does he bring to the table? "Just a physical specimen," Ellis said. I'm 340-plus pounds. I'm a big guy. I clog up the middle. I love to play the run. A run-stuffing defensive tackle." The All-MEAC selection recorded 94 tackles, 15 for losses and two sacks last season. He recorded 16 tackles against Howard. For his career, Ellis recorded 186 tackles, 37 1/2 for losses and seven sacks. "I'm relentless," Ellis said. "I just try to hustle to the ball and dominate whoever's in front of me, and do my job." Born in Jamaica, Ellis signed with South Carolina and was named a starter before getting in trouble. He chose the Gamecocks over Tennessee, Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina State and Rutgers. Ellis said he's not concerned about coming from a small school. "Every time when I used to be at Hampton, I'd watch Kendall Langford," he said. "He just gave us hope. Small-school guys, we're not on TV every week. Just with him doing it, it gave us hope that we could do it. Kendall was a good player. So I try to emulate what Kendall did, being strong in the weight room, working hard and trying to be just like him. I try to emulate my game after Kendall. He was a much better athlete." Ellis said the heaviest he's ever been was roughly 360 to 365 pounds. He could fit in well on a 3-4 team as a two-technique or five-technique with his size and athleticism to provide an anchor presence at the line of scrimmage. There aren't a lot of nose guards with his dimensions in the NFL. "I'm here to fill the shortage," Ellis said. "Whatever they need me to do, I'm here to fill that void."
If Ellis is now garnering 2nd round grades, the only chance the Jets would have of drafting him is to trade back into the 2nd round. While I'd love to see him on the Jets as I think he could be a real monster in Rex's D, that would mean that the Jets' wouldn't get a very good prospect at OLB Acho, Sheard and all the 1st round OLB prospects would be long gone. Too bad, I was hoping Ellis would drop to the end of the 3rd round due to character concerns. The Jets have to address the pass rush.
Acho is not a 1st rounder. If the jets can pull off the trade with Denver, who has two 2nd rounders, the jets could probably get Acho and Ellis. I personally don't think Ellis is a 2nd rounder. I think he's mid-3rd the earliest.
I didn't say he was. I listed Acho and Sheard separately implying that they are the 2nd round OLB prospects wouldn't get, then mentioned all the first round OLB prospects, thus stating that they wouldn't get one of the top OLB prospects that would have been there either at #30 or in the 2nd round if the Jets traded back and took either Acho or Sheard. Sorry if that wasn't clear. If the Jets could pull off that trade with Denver and get both, that would be excellent. Do you think the Jets #1 and #4 picks would get it done, or would they have to use their first and 3rd?
I wish players could be used. Then the 1st and a player, and a 7th would do the trick. But I would rather use a 4-5 pick from next year rather than limit the picks the Jets have in this draft, if I were the GM.
I am not too sure why everyone is so high on acho in the 3rd. I use to want him and thought that would be a good pick but after watching some more tape i am not too sure. Acho looked good in combine drills but when i watch tape of him rushing he just looks really stiff. Theres a reason Why orakpo went so high overall and i feel like people think we are goig to get a comprable player. Just watch some more highlights. The way acho gets to the qb doesnt impress me and even less so on the way he wraps up the qb. He over pursuits the qb and always ends up on the ground
per Cimini twitter I love Carimi as a prospect....but I'd be surprised if the Jets went Oline in the first round.
Thing is that he's a good enough prospect that if he's there at 30 he's arguably the BPA...RT is somewhat of a need too since there's no guarantee Vlad will take to the position so easily. I'd be surprised but Carimi is a top player in this draft and he'd be a welcome addition. Vlad then becomes a G of the future...probably RG but who knows...maybe Slauson falls off a bit and Moore does his thing once again.
Our oline depth would be in great shape, and since we're considered a run-first team, Carimi would make sense. But the defense needs to get younger and faster, especially the front 7. I wouldn't hate the Carimi pick, but I would raise an eyebrow.....I guess it would depend how the board fell and who was still available.
