Tannenbaum may try to sign David Harris to a long term deal ASAP. It'd save a lot of money this season if we were able to lock him up for 5 or 6 years. The franchise tag placed on The Hitman will be close to $10 million.
Tanny will offer Harris a new deal first , then Holmes and imo he will let rest hit the market. Restructure of Sanchez deal is also important and look for Thomas to be released unless he takes a restructure. God its good to post in here again......... Lets go get a goddam snack!!!
It's funny that I haven't seen this discussed as much as it should be (IMO). I will fully disclose my bias in that I'm a big fan of Harris, but I think your point is an added incentive to get a deal done.
You don't ask your franchise player to restructure. It'd be a smart move to Sanchez to volunteer to cut some cash, but he plays the most valuable position in this sport. If you want to restructure someone on this team that's overpaid, you go after Calvin Pace and Bart Scott. They're making way too much money. I agree that Bryan Thomas should be cut. He's garbage.
Yeah, I can totally see them approaching Sanchez for a restructured deal. If we can shave off a few million from his contract this year by adding a year or two to his contract then we should have enough room to sign both Edwards and Holmes.
You can't pay an inside linebacker not named Patrick Willis or Ray Lewis $10 million for one year. They franchised Harris because they obviously want to keep him around - a long term deal needs to be worked out quickly because a ton of money can be saved.
You NEED Sanchez to restructure. It's the first thing they do and it's the only way to get a ton of cap relief. It's normal for franchise guys to restructure by converting salary to bonuses without reducing his total comp-it actually gives Sanchez more job security because the extra dead money makes it's harder to cut him in future years.
I don't have a problem with how much Mark Sanchez is making. Our linebackers are making way too damn much - you ask those guys to restructure. ...especially the outside backers that can't get after the quarterback: Pace and Thomas.
Mr E, this contract was written for restructure this year ...he is our franchise qb no doubt but they offer him an extra 3 yrs , signing bonus prorated over first 3 yrs and we can shave $5m off cap. This is not a case of being cheap with him , far from it as he will get more guaranteed money but his cap figure will be healthier
Thanks for explaining it. I'm not a capologist, so I'm not sure how some of these contracts work. ...but I still feel other players should restructure too.
You're not changing how much Sanchez makes; you're converting his massive salary to a bonus to smooth out the earning over the next three years. There's really not much you can do to clear up cap space with a Pace restructure, and the only way to get much money from Thomas is to cut him.
Jamaal Westerman might be ready to contribute though. ...or you can bring in a much cheaper free agent that can do the same things that Thomas does. Antwan Barnes comes to mind.
Bryan thomas is a solid run stopper and is decent against the pass. That skillet is easily replaceable. Maybe not with one guy, westerman and a cheap fa could probably platoon to do what Thomas has done the last few years.
It's not clear that Barnes will be much cheaper than Thomas. Thomas kinds of sucks and I don't have a huge problem cutting him but you're not going to save that much money at OLB and you're not going to get that much better than an ok player who knows the system.
