They're by no means "done." They have just made the rest of the season a lot harder on themselves.

ETA: And while your general sentiment is on point (because the Sox have too much talent to continue to play this poorly), it should also be pointed out that while all teams have rough patches, there's no quota on them, so it's faulty to assume that the team has now "used up" one of its allotted rough patches and therefore will have one fewer going forward.

There are some positives to look at. Pedroia and Youk are starting to hit well. Lester has had two very solid outings. Beckett's performance on Sunday was outstanding. Papelbon has been light's out in his limited opportunities. Gonzalez has started out strong. On the flip side the Crawford has been a huge disappointment thus far. Lackey and Dice-K have been awful. And the bottom of out lineup has been weak. I fully expect Bucholz to come out strong for his next start and I doubt Crawford is batting any where near the .200 line come June.

True Cappy, they will have more rough patches prolly, but my point is it will all average out. Not to mention they are only 4 games back of the Yankees right now, which is all that matters really.

Before the season, it'd be correct to say it should average out... and you expect that in the remaining unplayed games it will average out. But the games they already played are in the book. And variance always takes its toll. Right now that has the Sox at well below average performance... and that affects what they'll need to do for the rest of the year.

I guess I look at it this way: Let's say we all thought the Sox were a 100-win team to start the year (.617 ball). If we still believe that they are a 100-win team (they've just underperformed), then we'd expect them to finish this season with 95 wins due to the poor start, because a 100-win pace after 11 games are already in the book would put them at 95 wins. We wouldn't say, "Oh, this must mean that the Sox are BETTER than a 100-win team, and will play at that better-than-100-win level for the rest of the season to erase that poor start." If anything, we're more likely to say, "This poorer than expected start has shown that the initial projections were overly optimistic, and they are less likely to be a 100-win team going forward. Perhaps they're only a 95-win team." Which means you'd only expect about 88 wins out of this team after the poor start.

No shit. You think anybody here is writing off the Red Sox? They're stacked. It's just schtick, they chirp us when we're down and vice versa.

And that's poor choice of words. Nobody "chooses" time and place for their cold snaps.

    Here's to hoping it continues.

Yeah, it's funny as shit to see them start 2-9, but I don't remember anyone acting as if they're going to lose 90 games this season.

Actually I'm still laughing about it, but they'll still compete for first place.

    Hilarious.

It's disturbing dropping two to the Rays, considering how terrible that lineup is, and their numbers were heading into that series.

Just have to keep truckin' along I guess.

yeah i dont anybody on the team will go out, and murder somebody.

but when a player is playing shitty they tend to press, which leads to sucking.
*note Mark Teixeira last 2 April's, and this April kind of.

so when you have an entire team in panic, and in Boston...it tends to not be so good when you start out so bad.

but I do indeed think they will touch 90 wins. They gonna get on a ridiculous streak soon, and probably go after a better starting pitcher.

I believe it was the improper spelling of morale (you typed "moral", which made your post read as though you were talking about the team's ethics as opposed to its spirits) that allowed devil to make a snarky comment.

They have been really bad, but only 5 games back of the Yankees? Not too bad considering they are 2-10.

The biggest thing holding the Red Sox back from getting on a long winning streak is the fact that they have somebody who pitches every 3 days who sucks.
