I hope this Saints-49ers game is good. These two teams played a bunch of great games from 1987-92. look at the scores from those dozen games (SF score on left)- 24-22 24-26 34-33 30-17 24-20 13-12 10-13 3-10 38-24 16-10 21-20
NO follows with a Bush TD for a quick 9-0 lead http://atdhe.net/24498/watch-new-orleans-saints-vs-san-francisco-49ers
Dixon vultures the TD! 49ers take the lead. Consecutive big time passes from Smith to Crabtree and Davis key the drive.
Niners are outplaying the Saints by a wide margin and would have a much more comfortable lead if not for their own mistakes.
too early to go for 2 because going for 2 long term has a lower expected point total than kicking XPs (2 point conversions are converted ~40% of the time), and you don't know yet how the scores will shake out. You should only go for 2 late when you have a better idea of points needed.
For what even if they don't get it, it would still just be a 1 point lead and the 3rd quarter is almost over anyway
almost 17 minutes left in the game when they scored and points were coming quickly. Going for 2 would have been the wrong call.
long punt return for Reggie Bush to close out the 3rd quarter Lee outkicked the coverage Saints set up with good field position
I'd rather push it for a 3 point lead, I get the whole idea of chasing points but it isn't much of an issue whether it is 1 or 2 point lead, but that is just my opinion
if it shakes out like that, that both teams keep matching FGs or TDs, then yeah, no difference between 1 and 2. The thing is, there's enough time for it not to happen like that, and where the extra point could make a difference. One of the keys in making the conversion decision is to know not to start going for 2 too early. If they scored with, say, 4 minutes left in the game, they should absolutely go for 2 to make it a 3 point lead. With 16:43 left, I think it's the wrong decision, and I think most coaches would agree.
I think if you factor in the crazy wind there which would push down the scoring there may not be that many possessions that would cause that point to make a difference if it was lost
