Question...how is Eli Manning's dive there any different than a kneel down? Is it the intent of it? When a QB takes a knee he isn't touched, so shouldn't the play technically still be live?
Wow, the Giants are fucked....man I don't really hate on these guys but their fans have been getting on my nerves for the past 6 weeks. So lets go Eagles.
It is intent - the entire kneel down play is not an attempt to gain yards, so the QB is allowed to declare himself down with a knee. On a play where you are trying to gain yards, the only way a QB can declare himself down is to slide. A mind-bogglingly stupid play by Eli to not slide.
I guess I see the difference, you're not trying to get any more yards with a kneel or feet first slide. It just seems like a lame way to give up the ball. Guess it could be solved by just holding on to the ball.
By the way, taking a knee is giving yourself up in general, and that applies even if you run for 20 yards first, not just if the QB takes a snap and then takes a knee.
I remember an RB doing it last season (can't remember who, could have been Jones-Drew) on the one yard line to avoid scoring and so allow the clock to run down rather than returning the ball.
Yeah, Drew did it last season and got a lot of positive attention for it. For every smart play like that, there are about a dozen moronic plays.
