I watched Mike'd up and I was close. He didn't say anything that bad about the JETS win but did Trump up Buffalo and the GIANTS "coming alive" in the 2nd half. But not once did he ever say the GIANTS or STEELERS got "Lucky" ...how fukin Quaint.
True, but at the same time QBs are having a butt load of time to find their receivers and even worse, the Jets are getting burned repeatedly by TEs, RBs, and slot receivers in the passing game. Even if Cro & Revis are shutting down their guys, everyone else is getting open. That's the tradeoff you make when you send so many guys but can't get through. I know the defense is doing well, but Elite and good are two different things.
and somehow we're 4th in PPG and 3rd in YPG. I guess all those TE's, RB's and slot receviers that are "repeatedly burning us" aren't making too much of an impact.
there's a difference between 4th and 1st. If you're talking about being elite and one of the best ever, those are issues, whether you like it or not. If you want to be elite or BOAT, then you have to be able to stop both the pass and run. This team can only effectively stop the run right now. The Jets are ranked #12 in passing defense with the best CB in the league and another damn good one on the other side. That should tell you something. Since the bye, the Jets have averaged 200.8 Passing Yards against per game. That still doesn't put them at #1. That'd be #4. I'm not saying the defense sucks or that it's no good. However, if we're talking elite, we're not there yet.
Who is saying they're elite or the best of all time? Right now they are one of the better defenses in the league this year in terms of points allowed per game and yards allowed per game. I couldn't care less if they're 12th against the pass. PPG is the most important stat. It doesn't matter if you surrender more passing yards if it doesn't add up to points.
So why aren't the Jets #1? People had been talking about the Jets being the best defense ever all offseason. They expected it to be the best in the league since Revis returned to form. Guess what? We're a top 5 defense since the bye. That's not #1. I expect this defense to be #1 and I know Rex Ryan expects the same.
I haven't read about anyone talking about them like they're #1. All I read is people scared the Pats are going to rape our defense.
People have been saying that we're not the best yet, and why haven't we gotten to that point yet, so I'm responding to that question. To me the biggest fault is the pass rush. That's all I've been saying. If the team had a great pass rush they would be completely dominant in all facets of the defensive game.
on espn first take they have the 3 people(shawn springs, skip, and this dallas writer) rank the top 5 AFC teams. of course the steelers are #2 or #3 for everyone. no one penalizes the steelers for wins. no one even mentioned that lucky win. the steelers are the bestest, that's why!
The Jets defense has been excellent in the red zone. A lot of opposing drives which start in good field position end in 3 points or turnovers.
I agree with you...but WSW made a very very solid point that I had not heard discussed. Teams do have to keep in extra potential receivers to overcome the blitz packages...so while the qb is standing back there with plenty of time...he doesnt have as many options. Regardless, your point is valid that guys eventually get open. What exactly is an elite defense. Bottom line is the Jets are in the top 5 statistically. There is one main reason I cant look at this team as a super defense and thats because they cant put any pressure on a qb unless they bring db's and safetys. I will admit this though...something changed against the Bengals in the second half. The Jets, for the first time, started getting pressure with their front 7. Would love that to become a trend. We shall see Monday Night.
What? They didn't have a roundtable, as the NFL Network did last week, entitled "Jets: Lucky or Good?" Somewhere in NYC, Krispy Kreme in one hand and diet Coke in the other, Fatty is laffing at the NYJs right now.
Averages taken from the year dont prove who is the best defense right now which I think we are. We didnt have Revis early and when he came back he wasnt playing like he could. What do the average stats of the beginning of the year have to do with who we are now?
If the Jets beat the bills how the Steelers did all you would hear is the Jets shouldve lost the game, the ball was in his hands and he lost it. They are frauds who won't be a top team. Francessa would go off on the Jets it that happened. Jets beat Cleveland - Pats & Saints both lose bad. Jets destroy Buff - Steelers shouldve lost the game. Would like to hear the logic for some of these analysts
the way i look at it we have not had the opportunity to see how good this defense can be with the present players and coaches. injuries have put a mild damper on it with jenkins, pace, revis etc. they played at a pretty high level last year and for some reason the ball always bounces different from year to year so maintaining a high level is very hard to do...... that being said we have another 2-3 year window to see just how good this unit can be. i am thinking we could improve the front seven speed and maximize production and really see these guys fly around for another couple years with better overall speed. when u think of a great defense u have to look at some of the not so popular stats. things like 3rd down sacks, penalties that result in a 1st down, yards given up on first down, tackles/yards behind the line of scrimmage, and red zone points/plays. these hidden things give a real good read on defensive efficiency and are highly correlated to a units ranking. without spending time to look these up for the jets i would be that we are near the bottom in some of these with the exception of the red zone stats. jil
The Giants didn't get their sacks on the final drive from their front 4...Rolle and another CB came on blitzes. The Giants had to blitz to get the QB on the ground too
agree about the 2nd half against the bengals - similar to the 2nd half of the pats game earlier in the year. hopefully a trend. jil
Yeah Cleveland was coming off a huge road win against the Saints and a destruction of the Pats...Jets go in control every stat..miss some FGs and win the game out in OT=lucky. Steelers lose a 13-0 lead, vanish in the second half, their defense is exposed, and thanks to stonehands escape with a win = gritty performance by the Steelers!
