Fun game. Both teams made a bunch of stupid mistakes, but overall it was pretty entertaining and I'm glad to see Boise State get the win.
It's tough to say, given that this was the first game of the season, but if tonight was any indication the Broncos are for real. They just traveled across the country and beat the best team in the ACC on the road, that speaks volumes.
Boise State is the best coached team in College Football. The amount of penaltiles for Boise was out of character. If Boise State has a weakness, it's their secondary, they have a few young players that will get better. Austin Pettis had a great game, his ST play was outstanding.
Vtech was poorly coached for this game. There was a 7 man blitz during the last Boise St. drive that couldn't even get past the line of scrimmage. So now it looks like Boise vs Alabama for the national title. Gonna be something like 42-17.
I'm not sold on Alabama coming out of the SEC this year. And, for what it's worth, I'd love to see Boise State stomp OSU into the ground like everybody seems to do in the title game.
Pryor looked real good the other night. I'm not 100% sold on the Buckeyes going to the championship game. OSU has 2 tough away games....Wisconsin (House of Pain) & Iowa. Let's see how OSU responds to a very good Miami team this week.....I think the game is going to be close.
WHAT?? Were you watching the same game I was? TyTard Taylor has got to be the dumbest quarterback I have seen starting for a top 25 college football team. He wasted so many chances because he panicked and started dancing like an idiot rather than just throwing the damn ball. Or how about checking out of a play to a freaking reverse. The only thing worse than Taylor has to be that VT offensive line. They opened maybe five decent running holes throughout the course of the game. MAYBE. Any time that RW wasn't hit within a second of touching the ball he made a play, it's not his fault that the Offensive Line was horribly ill-prepared and the offensive staff decided to leave the ball in the hands of Taylor 40 times. It looked like the line didn't even know HOW to run block. They played stupid, were out-coached by a WIDE margin, and handed that game on a silver platter to Boise State from the opening drive. Dumb mistakes, dumb penalties, and a dumb football team, that's all VTech is. The Hokies should have been ready to run the ball with Williams and Evans over and over and wear the Broncos down, instead they left it in the hands of the nation's most overrated player.
You can't expect him to be a big time passer - it's not his style. He did almost everything he could to put them in a spot to win the game. He hit open targets and made plays with his legs. I'm pretty sure the VT offensive coaching staff has broken things down as much as possible for Taylor. You said it yourself: VT's offensive line looked awful tonight. Taylor was playing behind the same line that was blocking for Williams. They did a horrible job in pass pro and run blocking.
Man, that was a hell of a game. Sometimes, though, I get frustrated by the complete breakdowns you see defensively in CFB (that final TD). You'd think I'd be used to it since I primarily watch the Pac 10  Still, without it, that trademark excitement on Saturdays would take a hit.
Bingo on both accounts. Here's what I learned today in quick, numbered form: 1. Boise State wins games for two reasons. They have fantastic coaching and they have enough horses to compete with the big boys. In a BCS conference I don't think they'd ever go undefeated, but they would always be a team that would always end up near top. They have enough talent to beat the lessers and hang around with good teams. What their great coaching does is make the games against their conference opponents laughers, and gives them a legitimate shot against anyone with an extended layoff. 2. Tyrod Taylor is awful. He should quit football. So should the Tech offensive staff.
15 of 22 for 186 yards and 2 TDs plus 76 yards rushing is a damn good performance for a player that's consistently underachieved as a college quarterback. He just played a good game against one of the best teams in the country.
They couldn't open holes but Taylor had time to throw on a lot of the plays that he just brought it down and started bouncing between the linemen, and when he did have time he's just so bad as a passer. Even his decent throws were barely completed because he basically lobbed passes in. I get not being a big time QB, he just doesn't have tools, but he marginal ability as a passer if anything. They asked him to drop back and throw 30+ times, if that's the path the Hokie staff wanted to take then put a different QB out there. And if they break things down further it'll be a 10 page high school playbook. There's a point where a senior needs to grow up, and not have everything be dumbed down around him.
There was a point where I noticed he was 8 of 9 passing for about 70 yards and I couldn't even recall a decent play made by him. Screen, short pass, dip and dunk, and then the spastic scrambles were all that stood out. And I'm not going to give him a cookie because he usually sucks worse. I couldn't imagine having him as my team's QB.
Imagine a pocket passer out there tonight for VT - Boise would probably have at least 7 sacks. His mobility...even if he did have a serious case of happy feet...allowed him to make a few plays - specifically the TD pass to Ryan Williams. I'm surprised VT didn't use Logan Thomas in some sort of special package. I think he's going to be a beast.
There's not really much to argue against that for this game. He's a career underachiever but he did pretty much everything within his ability to help this team win, and he did it as well as he could behind that OLine.
I like to think that Boise wouldn't have had the defensive freedom they did if there was any threat of a quality pass coming from the Tech QB. Those passes he completed were wide open because they had seven guys standing in the box waiting for Ryan Williams off the snap then trying to spy Taylor when he held it. Having a respectable QB would have backed that run pressure off quite a bit, though that's not saying Tech's soft line would have been able to capitalize. And I was surprised I didn't see Thomas come out there towards the beginning of the game after the fumble. At the very least to give Boise a different look.
I was really surprised when I saw that too. I have to give him a little credit though, because in my opinion, Boise State is the best team in the country. They definitely aren't the most talented, but they have all the pieces to their puzzle. Peterson's built the perfect team.
