Or of course there have been a few times when the guy being intentionally walked reached out and got a hit. I agree with Don that they shouldn't have to go through the motions. It seems silly.
Dominic Brown made his debut tonight and cost Roy Halladay a CGSO by making a bad play on a ball in right field with two outs in the 9th. Dodgers trade for Scott Podsednik. http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/mlb/news/story?id=5418481
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-cubs-lee HOUSTON (AP)—Chicago Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee has rejected a trade to the Angels, saying he prefers to finish the season with his team.
Per rotoworld: Looks like the Friars are going to be conservative and go after a few role players. I wish the Jayson Werth trade didn't fall through. David DeJesus would've been a nice pick up as well, but he got hurt at the wrong time. This move THANKFULLY rules out Theriot and Keppinger. I'm interested to see which prospect we gave up for Tejada - this was a need, especially with Eckstein's recent injury. *edit: sounds like it's salary relief and Double-A pitching prospect, and former South Carolina Gamecock Wynn Pelzer. Pelzer could eventually become the O's closer. Lance Berkman is a possibility too.
Some updates: The White Sox are apparently trying to get Manny Ramirez from the Dodgers. *deal fell through The Padres are very close to acquiring Ryan Ludwick from the Cards. Jake Westbrook should be a Cardinal by the end of the day. *possible three-team trade with Indians, Pads, and Cards. Adam Dunn has a "50/50" chance of being traded...
The Padres, Indians, and Cardinals have reportedly agreed to a deal: Cardinals get Jake Westbrook Padres get Ryan Ludwick (fucking awesome!) Indians get a bunch of prospects? Per rotoworld:
STL fans are pissed right now: As much as I hate Twitter, it's always funny to read what opposing fans think when moves happen.
Wow, very surprising. Westbrook is a steady, underrated pitcher but there's no way he's equal in value to Ludwick.
I guess STL figures they don't have room for Ludwick with Rasmus, Holliday, and hot hitting rookie Jon Jay in the outfield. Still, I don't see how you can give up a proven power bat for so little. Westbrook may have been available in August. The Indians get a below-average RHP prospect in Corey Kluber. The Cards get Jake Westbrook (who should be very good as a third or fourth guy in their rotation) and another below average Padres' RHP prospect Nick Greenwood. The Padres gave up virtually nothing for Ludwick - they'll just have to pay him big bucks, but it seems like the front office is okay with that.
Dotel to reportedly to the Dodgers. Joe Torre must be angry that Dotel's elbow survived his brief stint in the Bronx.
The Red Sox acquired catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia from the Rangers, tweets Dan Roche of WBZ TV. WEEI's Alex Speier tweets that the Red Sox are sending Roman Mendez, Chris McGuinness, a player to be named later, and cash to Texas in the deal.
horrible trade for St. Louis. Ludwick is much better than Westbrook. They should've kept Ludwick, but if they were hell-bent on trading him to make room for Jay, they needed to get more than what they got.
Blue Jays really fucked it up. 3 of the biggest trade chips (Downs, Frasor, Bautista) and they get nothing. You can't try to compete and rebuild and not spend money at the same time, especially in this division. Bautista will most likely be traded next season, but his value was max right now and they fucking blew it.
As a Cards fan, I was surprised to see Ludwick go in this deal. However, I'm thinking that you're right about the outfield being crowded and maybe they see something in Jon Jay, esp. since he's 7 years younger than Ludwick and Ludwick's numbers have dipped a little since 2008. Westbrook seems like another average pitcher, but Dave Duncan seems to thrive on taking these type of pitchers and getting the best out of them. Maybe he can pitch as well as Suppan did the first time with the Cards.
Houston's offense seems to have improved post-firesale. 15 runs and counting off of Jaime Garcia and the Cards bullpen. Jason Bourgeois led off tonight, and Angel Sanchez batted second. Both are guys who have hardly played on the major league level. Sanchez has racked up 6 RBI.
Nolan Ryan leads a group that outbids Mark Cuban, $593 million for the Texas Rangers. Cuban is 0-2 in buying ballclubs(failed to purchase Cubs for $1billion +)
