You start reviewing judgment calls, and you're asking for the end of officiating. Technicalities are reviewed by other sports, and now by baseball in terms of home runs. That's as far as it goes with baseball, just home runs. Jeter said something funny in the news, something about if baseball gets a bigger replay system, do the managers throw challenge flags from the dugout?
There's a huge difference between reviewing plays during the game (which I don't mind so much) and overturning calls after the game is over.
It did not. That was not going to be the final out of the game. Therefore, you can't assume if Denkinger got that particular call correct, the Cardinals would still have hung on to win the game. Also, the Cardinals got spanked 11-0 in Game 7. It is a billion dollar industry now. The technology is available to get these calls correct. MLB needs to get with the times and use instant replay for pretty much everything except balls, strikes, and balks. You want to speed up the game? Make batters stay in the box for the full at-bat with some exceptions (the catcher walking out to the mound to talk to the pitcher would be one).
Washington with a brutal loss at Houston. They were down 3-2 in the 9th, came back against Lindstrom and scored 2 in the top of the 9th. Then bottom of the 9th, 2 outs, runner on 2nd, Lance Berkman hits a line drive right at Christian Guzman. He somehow lets it drop. Dibble claims it had topspin and Guzman didn't recognize it or whatever, but it was an atrocious baseball play. Tie game. Carlos Lee comes up. Walkoff two run homer, game over. 6-4
So the NFL has no referees? I'm not saying everything should be reviewable, only stuff when the ball is in play(balls & strikes would be non-reviewable).
I don't normally listen to Francesa, but I was in the car earlier and I wanted to hear the 20/20. Francesa was stalling and taking calls, and get this: when people called up and said a perfect game is important to the history, etc. he started quizzing them on stuff like "How many perfect games have been thrown since 1980." "I don't know." "Obviously they're not important then." Sterling logic as usual.
Hey if the NCAA can decide to strip teams of titles nearly a decade later after they occur, overturning a horrible call 1 day after isn't a big deal.
This could have and should have been overturned. And why don't they have replay already? What's it going to do? Slow the game down? If that's the case why did they let Japanese pitchers in? Nothing slows a game down more than they do.
This is asinine logic. It's like saying "hey, if the Nazis can kill millions of people, killing a few thousand is no big deal." Just because someone else does something stupid doesn't make it OK for another stupid action to take place, and both the stripping of titles and changing calls after a game are plain stupidity.
Nazis? So what you're saying is that nothing can ever get repealed? That's like keeping prohibition on alcohol going despite the fact that everyone is still drinking alcohol anyway. It's not stupid to fix something that was obviously wrong.
There's a huge difference. Repealing something affects the situation going forward. Maybe they will change a rule as a result, but that will affect future events, not things that already happened. Changing the outcome of a sporting event after the fact is ridiculous.
Not sure why fixing an error is ridiculous. So a guy should just stay in jail even when DNA evidence proves he didn't do the crime? It's not going forward to set a precedent as it's just the one crime.
So Selig will do nothing about this, and he gets a 1hitter instead of a perfecto or no-no. Selig continues to cement his reputation as the worst president in the history of the MLB.
Yes seriously, if everybody involved knows it was wrong then why let it stand? What exactly is the problem with fixing a mistake? A league that makes an exhibition game determine home field in the World Series shouldn't have a problem with overturning a bad call in a regular season game.
The problem is there is a system in place to "fix mistakes", and this doesn't fall into that category. The bolded parts pretty clearly show that changing this is explicitly prohibited by the official rules. First because judgment calls are NOT PROTESTABLE, and second because it had zero impact on the outcome of the game. Even if there WAS a protest and it WAS upheld, the official resolution would be to replay the game from the point of the protest. There is no way to just change this, and it clearly falls outside of the realm of the official protest procedures.
I stated how technicalities are reviewed in other sports, that includes the NFL. Holding, Pass Interference, etc are not reviewable. Baseball is to not be touched. Its a completely different game from anything else out there.
Tampa Bay is DHing Kelly Shoppach and batting him cleanup. Career numbers: .240 BA, .328 OBP, .445 SLG this season: 3/17, no homers, no RBI (obviously)
