Yeah, I'm not sure I buy that it was considered because I don't believe Rex was sitting there thinking that the Falcons were going to possibly score 2 TDs on his D. He always believes his D will get the stop. As soon as we scored, he was planning his nex defensive possession strategy. You have to assume worst case scenario and the decision to go for 2 should have been made while our TD drive was ongoing. I hate the "we won, so everything was perfect" defense that so many fans use. The mistakes you make in wins come back tenfold in losses. It didn't cost us this game (or the Bills game), but Rex's game management will cost us a game this season unless it improves. Too many mistakes are being made and eventually one will bite us.
You people are insane and clearly dont ubderstand how much emotion and momentum play a part in the game. Sure theresno real difference being down 1 or 2 points, but what about the extra confidence the d gets when they stop the conversion? Still think we drive for a fg? What if we get it and thebthe game is tied going into overtime with atlanta having rhw momentum edge and possession being decided by a coin toss? Sure they coukd have still won but the what ifs are endless and it is just ridiculous to continue this nonsense. We get it, you hate rex for some ungodly reason. Maybe 4 playoff wins and a team playing their hearts out for the coach isnt enough. But then by that logic what is?
except you are ignoring that missing the 2 pointer now creates two situations that could cause the Jets to lose. if we miss and are only up by 12, 2 TD's, or a TD and 2 FG's now beat us. and the second option, TD, FG, FG was still realistic. 3 possessions in a quarter for a team isn't some crazy anomaly that only happens rarely. but kicking the extra point eliminates one of the ways the Falcons could take the lead and leads to Atlanta absolutely needing 2 TD's. just because Atlanta got the two TD's doesn't mean it was a bad decision, it means our D shot the bed and created situations that allowed Atlanta to score. but if the D holds them to FG's, you would be crying that we lost by one because Rex didn't kick the extra point. you know you would because you are talking completely from hindsight when you ignore the totality of all of the possible outcomes and only focus on 2 TD's simply because that is what happened. how in the world is creating a situation where the team has two ways to beat you, rather than one, the better decision? beyond that, your argument depends completely on ignoring the possibility that the second option is likely.
You do realize that without stopping us on a 2-point conversion, in Atlanta's next defensive possession they had a big sack and forced a 3 and out from us? All without the "momentum" you allegedly claim they would have gotten from stopping us in going for 2. The rest of this post is not even worth addressing. No one hates Rex, we hate bad in-game decisions that often lead to losses (although luckily not in this case because our rookie QB stepped up).
In the 4th quarter you are trying to maximize your chance of winning. The goal is to be up by a particular number of points that prevents the minimum amount of scores from beating you. If you are up 5, you want to be up 7 so 1 score can't beat you. If you are up 12, you want to be up 14 so 2 scores can't beat you. That's the whole point of going for 2. There's no need to analyze higher possession scenarios for the other team in the 4th quarter. You just don't want the chance to lose from a minimum number of scores. This is football 101. Certainly other variables could come into play (how good your offense is, how good their offense is, etc.), but the best bet is playing the percentages. Even the game-specific variables the other night heavily favored going for 2. We have a good D that was preventing Atlanta from big, quick-strike plays. Our offense had also moved the ball very well most of the night. Atlanta's best chance to win with the time remaining was getting 2 scores instead of getting 3.
Football 101 don't take points off the scoreboard. A 2 point conversion increases the chances of taking points off the scoreboard by a huge statistical amount.
Taking points off the board means you scored already and then due to a penalty, took the points off the board and continued your offensive possession. I guess this argument is emotion vs. math. To say we should not go for 2 because the other team will get momentum from stopping us is so "play not to lose" even herm would be disgusted by this. Rex and some of you are to emotional, its about numbers. And the posters who argue for the 2 pointer are not doing this to bash Rex, we just knows its going bite us in the ass, he is worse then Herm with the replay and now this
Actually, the opposite of what you said is true. Kicking the extra point means you trust your d to hold them in the fourth and win the game. The only reason to go for two is if your scared they are gonna score...
