Had the same problem going from 14 to 16. Don't forget Jim Brown's 1863 yards in 1963 came in 14 games. That gets ignored so let all the current records get ignored too.
When you factor in the size and speed of the players it definitely is. If players today could do what players back then did they would be killing people on the field. The rules protect players more but the collisions are much more violent due to the size and speed of the players.
What we'll see is more teams sharing their carry load. We're already seeing a trend toward a RB corps rather than a full time every-down RB.
It's not just going to be RBs. It will be all positions. Every 8th year it's like playing another season under the current sched, careers will be shortened and I believe play will be affected. It's hard enough to have healthy players after 16 games, add 2 more games of wear and tear plus they'll probably play more than usually in the 2 preseason games to get ready. It's just not smart and it's greedy which is what the NFL is all about.
pretty much agree with everything here. maybe they will add in 2 bye weeks? idk but if Goodell is so concerned about the lack of quality play in the preseason, what does he think will come at the end of an 18 game season where EVEN MORE guys will be injured, we will see the SAME backups that we see in the preseason
1 bye week sucks, 2 will really suck. They did that back in 1993 and it was awful but they are doing this for the fans
All they see is more green and that is all they care about. I'm all for making as much money as you can but this is a business reliant upon us fans and they are doing their best to make sure we stop following this game.
not to mention the fact that an 18 game season will give teams EVEN MORE of a reason to sit starters towards the playoffs.
I don't care about the records. The records are already messed up. games per season since 1936- 12- 1936 11- 1937-42 10- 1943-45 11- 1946 12- 1947-60 14- 1961-77 16- 1978-81 9- 1982 (strike-shortened season) 16- 1983-86 15- 1987 (strike-shortened season) 16- 1988-current
16 is good... I think it could be possible to move to 18 if the whole off.season is reworked like LaCanfora suggested on NFL.com The way the off-season is set up right now is border-line retarded imo...
Painter entered the scene in Week 16. Entering action that day against the Jets, the Colts were 14-0. The Chargers were 12-3. The 1 seed was already clinched. If there was an 18-game schedule, the 1 seed would not have been clinched.
Throw in a second bye week and I think its doable depending on the roster headcount and the cash divvy.
At the same point the protective gear is much better today than it was in the 1970s. The 1970's was a very violent era, the 1950's were even more violent.
