What the Rex homers continue to have selective amnesia about is, that he is as much responsible for the lack of talent the jets have on Offense. MT paid with his job for the jets downfall on offense and some of the contracts he gave out to Players that Rex vouched for, he had an influence on how the draft played out in his tenure here. He is the image of his father, defense all the time, the only thing that can save this organization, is Idzik not letting Rex have his way with next years draft. I don't want to hear about lack of talent in offense, I saw some good offensive players skipped over by the Jets this year and the year before so they can draft defensive players.
Rex needs to stay and I feel like the team was playing for him yesterday. He's the leader of our football team and makes sure we have a nasty defense every year. We need to extend him through the 2015-16 season and start spending our draft picks on the offensive side of the ball and we'll be in a good place these next couple years if we have competent QB play.
I want to see Rex-Marty experiment a few more years. Marty just started with a rookie QB and didn't have many weapons. Next draft and free agency should bring some talenr to the offensive side of the team. And I will always say this, when we have a top 10 offense who can stay on the field long times to eat up clock, Rex's D will become more and more effective.
The way Rex spoke to the team on locker room and the playcalling on the field shows he will keep the job. Now Leave MM alone and stop telling him to play conservative on offense xd and help him in the draft dont buffen up your defense on the first round . xd
I agree, this really is a tough call. That is why I made this thread to see everyone's thoughts. I picked 8-8 as it means Rex won 3 of his last 4 and improved 2 games from 2012. However, if I was Idzik, I would be looking at all coaching possibilities right now. If one looks better or more promising than Rex, I make a move. If not, stick with Rex. It really is so hard to evaluate the coach of this team with it's extreme lack of talent.
competitive football.... 8-8 would nice but even just beating Miami (to knock them out of the playoffs) should do it. :finssuck:
rex stays no matter what the players love him, and there is a lot of young promise on the team. the team is one or two big names away from fielding a good offense. and we know that rex will field a disruptive defense. every team has to experience growing pains at some point but recently the jets have been perpetually tearing it down only to start over. there havent been any coaches worth riding it out with until now, and i hope that with a guy like idzik who wants to change the culture we will finally see a coach live up to his full potential. rex needs to be given a shot, hes got greatness in him and hopefully one day we as fans can watch his team win a superbowl.
I don't know if Rex is staying or going. He's been a productive coach given the talent available to him during his tenure with the Jets. His methods have been somewhat unorthodox at times and occasionally counterproductive. We don't know what his overall impact on the club's drafting has been in the 5 seasons he has been Jets head coach. We do know that he has advocated for a bunch of veteran free agents and again those guys have been a mixed bag. He's generally gotten about the best you could expect out of the teams he has coached and that's a big plus in his favor. When he had a deep veteran team with a young QB he took the team to the playoffs two years out of three and to the AFC championship game in both runs. The last couple of seasons he's had an odd assortment of too young, too old, not quite good enough and a few good players and the Jets have avoided a collapse both seasons, although by the end of the year the magic had run out. Last year's team had 4-12 written all over it after Revis and Holmes went out. They were 6-7 after 13 games. This year's team had 4-12 or worse written all over it but a Rex Ryan team will never do that because he'll find a way to keep them respectable even when nothing is going quite right. Again, I don't know whether he staying or going but I've watched a lot worse than the last two seasons and I'd kind of like to see Rex with a productive QB for a change.
Stays. Do we really want a fourth OC in 4 years? If Rex goes the new HC will want his own OC so MM is gone too. Rex has had no QB play in the time he's been here. Keep the Idzik, Rex & Mary team together for a couple years at least, then decide. Rex has learned a lot about being a HC in the last few years. Don't want him taking that knowledge to some other team.
I voted 8-8....I wish I could take it back...7-9 gets it done too....as long as that includes beating Miami. I expect we will win one more than that, though, just to make it interesting. On a side note...as expected, Chucky is not in the running on the off chance that Idzik absolutely wants a new man at the top spot. If Gruden is REALLY who we want...you let Rex roll on his final year, get him some more talent and see where that goes. MAYBE he won't want to do ESPN next year and you throw millions at him.
This is the Jets make a trade with ESPN scenario where they send us Gruden after 2014 in return for their new color man Rex Ryan.
This is a good point. They're starting from ground ZERO AGAIN if he's gone. This is the 1st time they've had a decent OC, and we know the defense will change too. Some of the knocks on Rex are well documented, many can be fixed on this team if Idzik is a good GM / Strong final say on matters outside the lines. Rex's biggest knocks were some player/talent evaluation (becomes enamored based on personality & past performance) & obviously on Offense (signing off as Sparano as the OC, seriously??!?!) just a few off the top of my head: Letting Woodhead go in favor of Patrick fucking Turner. Bringing in Mason & Plax and demoting Cotchery (which led to his release request) If the GM is good, and FIRM and lets REX just deal with sundays, this team will improve.
i know nfl is win now mode but it took bill cowher, 15 years i believe, to win a sb for the steelers...so lets give rex time - we've been waiting for sb for these many years, few more isnt gonna make a difference
Five year extension already signed. Announcement right.after the season Well deserved for Rex....a terrific NFL HC Sent from my BNTV400 using Tapatalk
I just don't think Rex is a good HC. I think he's even overrated as a DC. While most HCs know more about one side of the ball than the other, few are as clueless as Rex regarding offense. One of his most glaring weaknesses is his lack of understanding that this is a passing league now and one can't win with defense and running the ball. A close second is his cluelessness in how to handle a young QB. He also gets too passive/conservative and plays "not to lose" when games get tight. We saw it again this year following the bye. The Jets got into playoff consideration having opened up the offense. Even with Geno's TOs, the team was playing more aggressively and playing to win. The minute they possibly are in position to make the playoffs, Rex goes passive and shuts down the offense, not only hurting the team, but Geno's development. There's no way that isn't on Rex. We've seen it time and again with all three OCs during Rex's time as HC. That style of play isn't in MM's DNA. He also is too loyal and undisciplined. He doesn't hold players accountable. As a result, the team doesn't play with a lot of discipline and players who aren't producing continue to see the field. For someone who is supposedly a master motivator, one or more units of the team continually fail to show up for games or don't show up until the second half. This has happened more with Rex than it did under Herm and Mangini combined. It also happens too often in big games. As an example, think about the Cincinnati game this year. I think the team has also suffered more blowout losses under Rex than under either Herm or Mangini. He can't beat Baltimore. Every time the Jets play Baltimore they're tight and afraid. Baltimore is inside Rex's head. We've seen the excuse a lot this year that it's the offense's fault because they don't score enough points or keep the ball long enough and the D gets worn out. What was the excuse yesterday. Between the offense and STs, the Jets hung up 37 points, and the D let the Raiders right back in the game every time the Jets started to pull away yesterday. That isn't the first time that's happened, either. Clock handling. This is basic Coaching 101 stuff and Rex still can't grasp it. Adjustments, it takes the Jets too long to adjust when their game plan isn't working or when the opposing team has a new wrinkle. For a supposed defensive mastermind, this isn't acceptable. There have been a few notable games where Rex had brilliant game plans and the Jets won. Those have been too few and far between imo. More often than not, he is outcoached by the opposing HC. The bottom line is that he just hasn't shown enough ability to learn, adapt and grow on the job, and just isn't a very good HC imo. He's had five years and the team has gone backwards. That's not all his fault, as Tanny has to get a chunk of the blame, but everyone except Rex has been held accountable and been fired (Tanny, Sparano, Schotty, Cavanaugh). It's also telling that Pettine, who supposedly was close with Rex and felt like he owed Rex a lot, quit on Rex. Several prime GM candidates also removed themselves from consideration for the Jets' GM job because Woody wouldn't allow Rex to be fired last offseason. It's time for Rex to go.
With Rex as HC, you're gonna be waiting a LOT longer than 15 years to win a SB. He's just like his old man... not very smart and not a complete HC.
And to your point, Idzik went and took two defensive players with his first two picks. What the hell? Richardson ended up being an awesome pick... time will tell with Milliner. As you put it, it is the GM's job to build the team the correct way rather than the Rex way. So far that appears to be a very mixed bag. I sure hope that changes this offseason. To fire Rex is to lose an elite defense and further stunt the growth of Geno Smith, wasting him as a draft pick entirely. I'm for keeping the coaching staff intact, and making some serious moves on offense.
What defensive players? After the 1st round(Milliner & Richardson) it was all offense in this year's draft and from 2012 Coples and Davis who aren't exactly bad. Only other defensive players the Jets took was Josh Bush in the 6th round and Antonio Allen in the 7th in 2012. The only major bust in the last two years is Hill.
Well RR problem is he thinks that we get a 3-0 lead HIS D will do the rest & shut out the other side. RR does not take into account such things as the other side breaking big plays like the Raiders did yesterday & others have done as well during the 2013 season. Then there is the FUMBLE where the other side runs it in for a TD. Then there is the blocked punt which the other side falls on for a TD. That are just a few of the things that blows RR rational to pieces. As I have said over & over this season he should be a "Asst Head Coach" & be just like his bro be a DC & bring a real true HC that can think both sides of the ball
