In actuality, in 2014 they finished 8-8 and got the 14th pick, considered Pryor & Dix but took the CB Fuller We finished 8-8, somehow got slotted 4 spaces down and took the S Pryor ( not like we would've taken a CB again anyway)
Fuller is spitting in the face of the CB being one of the hard transitions from college to the pros narrative.
The tie breaker for the draft is based against your opponents winning percentage which is why the Steelers and Ravens who we both lost to picked ahead of us... waaaaaaack
There are always exceptions to the rule, it doesn't mean the rule isn't valid. Fuller's film before the draft looked to me like the most NFL ready corner we have seen in years. He was great at bumping the receiver at the LOS, clean but very aggressive, and great hands for a corner. That's not an indictment on every other corner coming out of college, it's a way of saying that he should probably have been taken in the Top 10 instead of the middle of the first.
It's not clear that having Pryor develop into a FS is the best thing. It might be the best thing for the current Jet's defense however his value might be a greater if he turned into the kind of asset that Troy Polamalu and Ed Reed did, a free-ranging wildcard that forced TO's at an unusual rate. A lot has been written and said about the fact that Rex Ryan's defenses, and the Baltimore defensive system in general, don't really have a FS but more have two interchangeable safeties that both spend time in the box on a regular basis. This is one of the reasons that Rex and the Ravens defenses are able to blitz more heavily than the average defense and not get burned as often. The QB has nobody to read reliably as the FS and so they can't make a snap decision on whether a throw under pressure is safe or not. The blitzes can come from either side and the QB still doesn't know where his safe lanes are. The Steeler defensive system does it a bit differently, with two interchangeable FS's, with one of them being a true roamer who can be anywhere on the field on any down. This is why Polamalu has had so many impact plays all over the field during his career. He can be lined up over a guard waiting to blitz or outside the tackle or bumping the slot receiver and then in or he can just be covering the TE or dropping into deep coverage. He can do all of these things when he starts lined up 9 yards off of the line of scrimmage as the offense goes into its set. Trying to get Pryor developed as a stay at home FS is probably the last thing the Jets should be doing. Yeah, it opens up room for Allen at SS but he's also a guy who benefits a lot from getting moved around the formation. What the Jets need to do is find another safety who is somewhat interchangeable and let him and Pryor grow together. Then Allen becomes a piece with high value on the field because unlike many CB's he can actually cover a TE and is as comfortable playing in the box as outside on the edge. Just let Rex develop these guys and keep adding pieces. The Jets defense already breaks many of the rules that define a good NFL defense and yet they are consistently good. Once they get the right pieces they will be great.
I think I'd compare him more to a freelancer in the box like Polamalu, if we're comparing to him and Reed. Ed Reed was capable of playing both outside in coverage and inside the box at an elite level, which is why he's one of if not THE best safety to ever play. Polamalu is excellent in space, but his bread is buttered in the box and at intermediate range. That's the sort of player I can see Pryor developing into, although the odds of performing at Troy's level aren't very good.
I never understood how Polamalu is always at the place the ball arrives to give that punch even if the receiver can make the catch he always hit them before the receiver feet hit the ground, its amazing.
This is where you and I differ. I'm less concern about Pryor's future value and more concern about the current Jets' defense. While the Ravens safeties were somewhat interchangeable, they had primary roles on the team. If Polamalu's bread was buttered in the box, as Byz pointed out, Reed's was in coverage. That didn't mean he wasn't mixing it up in the box and/or doing his share of blitzing. With a roster already having a glut of in-the-box safeties, a stout front line and inexperienced CBs, I would have much preferred drafting a safety one in the mold of Reed rather than Polamalu, if we had to draft one. Just like you cite the Ravens and Steelers defense, I can just as easily refer to Idzik's former team. Seattle just won a championship behind the strong play of a young safety duo who compliment rather than supplement each other. I'd gladly trade the a potential Pro-Bowler safety 3-5 years from now, for a complete safety pairing in less time. If I were incline to give Idzik the benefit of the doubt, the argument I might give would be that Idzik did not see AA as a starter, which is coo coo for cocoa puffs on it's own merits.
he's good but his picks were all from bad/dumb passes. They were like gifts. he's not bad though but i know the 3 picks in 3 games is gonna have people overrating the fuck out of him early on.
The bold is all you needed to say. That's all I'm saying and I believe that's about all any have said about him. If that's overrating him, then you are just guilty as the "people" you make reference to. I live in Chicago so my opinion of Fuller is based on more than just the stat line of 3 picks in 3 games.
Fuller also has 4 pass defenses to add to those picks. He's still a rookie and will have his share of rookie moments, like getting shook out of his shoes by Greg Salas, but the guy looks like the real deal.
I was mildly surprised Fuller wasn't available when the Jets were OTC. Fuller's stock was rising fast the few weeks before the draft. I'm happy with the Pryor selection, I think he's going to be a solid pro. I was a huge Fuller advocate and had him in my final Jet's mock draft. Fuller's positives were clear, he was very well rounded in press coverage and zone and had the pedigree and intelligence to be an outstanding NFL CB. I can understand Jet fan's frustration about passing on Alshon Jeffery, but people bitching we didn't get Fuller is a waste of time, he wasn't available.
Ugh, it seems that no discussion can be had on this board w/o someone jumping to the conclusion in bold. How can anyone bitch about a player that was drafted before we picked? SMH
I agree!!! Trust me, some are bitching about not drafting Fuller. This board, like all Football message boards, is nothing but a bitch fest half the time.
People are only bitching about Fuller because we just played the Bears and he owned us so now they know him. If they knew anything they be bitching about not picking Roby or Verrett. Two cb's picked after us that have been playing excellent ball. Of course if we went CB in round one again this year everyone woulda lost their shit.
