because there are just a buffet of GM jobs to choose from. if a candidate is worth having, he should have the ability to identify talent and convince everyone in the organization that his preference of talent is the right choice, regardless of who the coach or owner is. if he can't even convince the team that the player is the right choice, how good of a GM candidate can he possibly be?

Sorry, my mistake. I just feel as though people hating the conference seem to want Rex fired and tarred.

I love Rex, and I have a feeling that we're not going to be a 2-14 team next year.

The other way to look at is that the warden is finally running the asylum. It sure looked like the inmates were in control the last couple of seasons and for a bunch scattered before that.

prior to the start of the season, much like Dirty Sanchez asked, Rex needed to look for a better option at QB rather than extend Mark Sanchez, but now that is water under the bridge, because the GM did it and he was fired. I also remember Schotty getting let go in the off season and Ryan bringing in his guy to run the offense because he was going to take a more active roll then. His guy was let go yesterday.

  6. "Woody's too hands off & only cares about money" "Woody's too hands on & needs to hire a football guy" "How can Woody hire a search firm when HE should be calling the shots" "Woody is in over his head".

Every one of these is PURE speculation. We don't KNOW what happens behind the scenes. It's easy to look at the jets failures and assume the problem is ownership. But talk about grasping at straws. People need to get a clue!

lol, something about their appearance suggested INCOMPETENCE?
it sounds like you just can't stand the sight of them anymore.

A GM hasn't even been nominated. Is it possible you are overreacting just a touch?

Now, if they promote Scott Cohen......then i'll join your rage.

But if they land on of the consensus top prospects, then where will the incompetence talk and conspiracy theorists go next?

I said the best candidate. I am sure they can find someone who will take the job. It just will be one who meets their conditions, who may or may not be the best candidate. In short the conditions matter more to them.

Do you really think it makes sense to come up with all these conditions the GM will have to deal with? Add sucking up to Rex in the upcoming interview as one of them. A guy who has coached his team to 13 losses in teh last 19 games and who just did a 180 on what kind of O he wants. A guy who clearly will have input as well on the new OC.

After today, do you or anyone else here have a good idea of what Rex wants to do on O, and even more to the point what he will do, what he is capable of???

    I sure don't.

There are what five other GM positions open now? If I were a top five candidate, the Jets would be at #6 on my own list of preferences.

That is all I am saying.

Yeah, but who is going to pick the GM? I would think that Rex will have a say in it, which could be a messy situation considering Rex's rather tenuous hold on his job. Obviously, the GM will have to like Rex Ryan...that would kind of be a prerequisite, wouldn't it? In the same vein, if Rex is going to pick his coaches, that may rule out a lot of candidates who may worry about their own job security, considering Rex's status which seems to be on the bubble.

If the Jets have another year like last year (or even 2011), I think there is a good chance he loses his job. That leaves the Jets with a GM that was, at least in part, picked by Rex...and a coaching staff that are at risk to lose their own jobs right along with Ryan after only one year.

The way Woody is going about this is very risky, and I'm not sure how much sense it makes.

One thing is for sure: the media circus needs to stop, and don't tell me that Rex doesn't do a hell of a lot to fuel it. Dude needs to keep his mouth shut and not give the media a reason. Tebow needs to go too, as Rex seems to not want to play him anyway.

What other than speculation do you have to base any confidence in Woody and the decisions he is making right now? Oh yea, that and being a homer. No offense.

You guys are hilarious, analyzing a friggin press conference like its a superbowl. Relax, what could have Rex said right now to make you feel better about this year? Nothing. The only thing that will make it better will be winning next year. So stop with all this nonsense, and stop listening to Francesa, who clearly has an anti-Rex agenda. He's bitter that Rex won't come on his show because he knows all Francesa is gonna do is try to make him look bad. Yeah, cuz i really got out of that press conference that Rex will run the personnel scouting...thats gotta be one of the most idiotic things Francesa has ever said. THEY DON'T HAVE A GM RIGHT NOW!!!

What are all these 'conditions' you reference? I only heard that Rex will be the HC this year.

And at no point in the PC, was it suggested that Rex will be interviewing the candidates or deciding the final choice.

What if the Jets land one of the top choices? Will u admit you were wrong then?
I'll admit i was wrong if they promote Scott Cohen.

you act like all of those other teams likely do not have any conditions either. and you don't know how much control, if any, Rex will have over the GM. the most likely and reasonable situation is just that Woody wants to make sure they the GM and Rex agree on basic philosophy for what the team needs and the style of play. and considering you have no idea whether anyone you would consider the best or top candidate agrees or disagrees with Rex on those points you can't say that a great candidate would not want to work with him.

Are people here really that stupid. Of course they are going to asks Rex opinion that does not mean he has to approve the candidate but give his opinion. He is the head coach of the team why would you not get his opinion?

  18. Upgraded facilities, brand new stadium, unlimited resources(hinted at on many occassions by Tannenbaum while here)well paid/well respected scouting dept... I would say those factors shine at least somewhat of a damper on your anti Woody(No offense) speculation

Well, putting aside you should have said he SHOULD lose his job with another year etc... But of course Woody is Woody.

But you make a great point, which is similar to the one the SNY guys were making after the Buffalo game.

It adds up to this - without a clear basis for thinking Ryan is up to being a positive contributor in a rebuilding process, keeping him is going to hold back the process, in a number of ways. Your point refers to one of them. He is going to pick a guy who may fire him next year? CS candidates will come here knowing the guy they will report to and who hired them could very well be gone in a year?

THink about Ryan hiring the OC. Well, how do you NOT have the HC getting input on such a hire? But on the other hand, we were just here last year, just about right now, and how did that work out? THis time will be much better? Why to think so? Because Ryan says he will take a totally different approach to the O?

They were going to take a totally different approach to the O last year, and they brought in Tim Tebow. How did that work?

And what is the plan for Sanchez? Last year we thought the plan was to use him differently, too. If they do not get rid of him, what are they going to do with him?

I am more convinced now that the Jets should have made a clean break with the past, and I say that as someone who up til recently was more a Ryan supporter than not.

But it does not make sense to me to keep him anymore, and none of Ryan's supporters are offering compelling reasons to do so. Certainly Woody didn't.

It said Rex will have input. Geez, if that doesn't include interviewing a candidate, it's even worse than if it did.
