Do you truly believe that Sanchez is the best offensive player in this draft? Maybe I didn't watch him enough but I know his coach did not think he was ready when he announced he was leaving. I think people see what Ryan and Flacco did last year and are reaching for straws when it comes to the QB position. I think the JETS are ready to win now and can not afford to draft Sanchez unless they are committed to throw him in the mix right away. If they think he is absolutely ready for NFL action then so be it, I'll get behind the pick. But if not, I say we draft someone that is ready to play now, like Moreno if he is still on the board.
As for the argument that USC produces top players, perhaps. What happened to Leinart? Here's the problem with jumping on the top pick bandwagon. All of those guys you mentioned....Young, Vick...Edwards are hardly the big NFL guns. So what is the point in having a hard-on over the top guys? So what if Sanchez is smart? Didn't we just get rid of a "smart" QB who could never clear the bar in crunch time? One of the greatest QBs of all time, who is currently playing the game, was drafted in which round? I'm sorry but just being "smart" doesn't cut it. There will be times when protection breaks down, and he will have to rely on his athleticism...this IS sports, afterall. All I'm saying is, you can't contradict yourself and expect people to take your argument seriously.
I don't think Sanchez makes it to pick 8. Could be wrong but it wouldn't surprise me if this week QB class goes 1,2.
Oh contrare...Florida is returning almost their entire national championship team with THE best player in college football named Tebow. With or without Sanchez, the Gators were always the odds on preseason favorite going into the 2009 season. Check any line in Vegas now or before Sanchez declared. USC's Defense has huge question marks going into next year such as replacing a Linebacking corp that could all be first rounders on Saturday. Good yes, the favorite, no way.
I love all the Tebow love in college yet he prob will be a backup or gimmick player in NFL. If colleges were smart they would start shifting more to NFL style systems instead of the trend towards the opposite. I Would think it would be easier to recruit players then because they would have a higher chance of getting drafted.
Your entitled to your opinion but you will see on saturday. Like I said, IF the Jets trade up to 8 it will be to take Sanchez and only Sanchez, no one else. A new rumor is we are looking at M Jones who had his off the field trouble last year but if you look at his stats had somewhat of a coming out year and led the Jags WRs. Bring in Jones, with Cotch, Keller, Clowney, Stuckey and B Smith and we have a solid group of pass catchers. Thats not even factoring in L Washington who can score every time he touches the ball. WHY THE HELL WOULD WE REACH FOR CRABTREE AT #8 and give away our #1, 2, and 4th round pics. That is just plain dumb man. The fact is we are much weaker at QB than at WR and if we are going to sell our soul this year to move up it will be to take the guy who plays the most important position on the field....no brainer.
This topic has warranted 200+ posts and 11 pages in less than 24 hours? And the chances it will happen? 10%? Maybe?
Its the last few days before draft we got nothing to talk about till then besides stuff like this
1. I was comparing John David Booty to Young, Vick, and Edwards -- because the poster I replied to try to say JDB was some sort of great quarterback. JDB was ranked behind all of those guys. Matt Leinart is immature and was injured early in his career - remember, the Cards tried to start him and he broke his collarbone. Kurt Warner came out of no where...again. What about Carson Palmer, Eli Manning, and Philip Rivers? All three of their team have benefited greatly from drafting a top QB prospect. Our previous head coach dumped Chad Pennington - Rex Ryan wouldn't have done that...he wants a game manager -- not Brett fuckin' Favre. One of the other greatest QBs of all time, Peyton Manning, was drafted #1 overall. He's a pretty smart guy, wouldn't you say? Mike Mayock on Sanchez: "Recognizes the blitz very well for a player of his experience and often targets the defenses' weak link when being blitzed" and "Can evade the pass rush and will scramble if the defense gives free yards...Rare accuracy on the rollout" -- Does that answer your question about him when protection breaks down? I still don't see where I contradicted myself?
Wasn't it more our owner and GM? Both of them are still here. It ended up costing Mangini his job, though. funny how that works.
Yes, I believe he's the greatest offensive talent in this draft. Over Mike Crabtree, who I think will bust in the pros. Maclin looks like a pretty good receiver, but Sanchez brings more to the table... 1. Pete Carroll was upset because his national championship hopes got a lot smaller when Sanchez declared. He took back those comments and apologized...a lot of NFL teams asked Carroll about that and he cleared things up. 2. I'm sick of the Flacco and Ryan comparisons -- QBs get drafted in the first every damn year. Joe Flacco didn't have to do much last year. The Ravens won with running the ball and with a strong defense. Sanchez would be in a similar situation in New York. 3. You don't have to throw a QB into the fire...just because you draft him high. Sanchez can sit behind Clemens and learn the offense. If Sanchez beats Clemens out in camp, then he can start - but there's no reason to throw him into the fire.
Leinart was hyped as maybe being the No. 1 pick in the draft when he came out. He fell to 10 and was the third QB off the board instead of the 1st as many suspected. Sanchez is clearly moving up draft boards and may well go top 5. Clearly NFL scouting departments see something in this guy. Could be wrong he may fall but I think the more teams have looked at his skill set, the more teams like how he will translate at the pro level. I think with Leinart the exact opposite happened.
Mangini wanted a strong armed QB as well though -- the owner just wanted to sell tickets. With Rex Ryan a new mindset has been installed - Tannenbaum will get him the guys that he wants...see Bart Scott and Jim Leonhard.
I am sorry you can not compare John David Booty to Sanchez they are not even in the same ball park if they were Booty would start for the Vikings right now. Booty started over Sanchez cause it was "his turn" not cause he was better than Sanchez.
This team is losing six starters on defense: Ellison (S), Cushing (LB), Maualuga (LB), Moala (DT), Maiava (LB), and Harris (CB) -- Maiava and Ellison shouldn't really count because they were rotational players. You have no idea how well Pete Carroll has built team -- if a player leaves, a better player steps in and fills his spots. That's just how it is at USC. Ever heard of Chris Galippo? He'll probably be the best linebacker in the country behind Mark Herzlich. Clay Matthews was a backup...and he's still going in the first round. Luther Brown was ranked one spot behind Rey Maualuga coming out of high school. They're fine at linebacker. Taylor Mays is probably the best defensive back in the country alongside Tennessee's Eric Berry. Josh Pinkard, Kevin Thomas, and Shareece Wright round out one of the most experienced secondaries in all of college football. Everson Griffen is a 265 pound defensive end that runs in the low 4.4s - he'll be a top ten pick. Other defensive ends Nick Perry and Malik Jackson are also big time pass rushers. That's just on defense... On offense, they have about five running backs that are potential first rounders. Their receiving corps is incredibly fast and experienced. The entire offensive line returns - 2 starting seniors and 3 starting juniors. They're loaded at tight end with Ayles, Ellison, and McCoy. The only question mark on this team is at quarterback - who will start? Aaron Corp, Mitch Mustain, or the freshman Matt Barkley? I'm banking on Mustain and he'll have success and he'll be a first round caliber quarterback...
So Pete Carroll gives starting jobs to guys that have been there the longest as opposed to who is the better player? In that case freshman and sophomores would never see the field....Try again.
