I just would like to have a single September of Jets football without feeling like I have the worst hangover I've ever had.
Not sure people fully grasp how good AVT is. Or I guess I should say was now. There is a massive drop off between him and Xavier Newman. AVT moved people in the run game and kept the pocket clean. I’m hoping there’s more so less of a drop off between him and Tippmann, then not a big drop off between Tippmann and Myers. Like I said earlier this really doesn’t do much to our 2025 win total but this is definitely going to make us worse and what really sucks is having to fill a position on the line we previously thought would be good for the next five years at least.
Very well said. It’s suboptimizing two positions and weakening our bench significantly. But in and of itself is not going to impact the win/ loss column all that much. But makes us weaker going into the season.
This injury sucks, but it's not the end of the world. Now imagine GW getting hurt, that would be. AVT is a tough loss, but thankfully we have solid back-ups there. Studies showed (@REVISion posted earlier) when it comes to OL, the drop off from a very good player to a solid one does not really impact the outcome that much as long as you are solid across the board. And Josh Myers basically replacing AVT should not be a massive drop-off. If it is thankfully we have some solid Guards as back-ups, like Newman, and even PS. Marquis Hayes reportedly had a very good camp, and we could see he was good in preseason ourselves. People were surprised he made the original 53 since he is a no name player, but he earned it. He was waived in the second round of cuts when we picked up OT from KC, who also had a great camp, but was back on PS, and I expect him to be on 53 when AVT officially goes on IR. I also want to give some credit to AG/Mooge. It seems like they are a lot more ready for OL hit than JD/Bob was (well, they were not ready even before the season but even worse after the injury). Also, a lot of people suggested they should give extension to AVT this offseason, but Mooge did not do that and that was a wise decision. AVT now basically missed 3 years out of 5 in NFL, and it will be a 1 year prove it deal next year a la Becton whether with us or someone else.
This would be the perfect situation to find out if Tippmann can play guard in the pros because he's tragic at center.
I predict Tippman will show well at RG (as he seemed to in spot duty last year), and they'll be looking for a starting center next offseason. From everything I've seen, Josh Myers doesn't offer much hope of being a longer-term solution at C. Hopefully can be serviceable though This also will make decisions on extensions for the guards easier if John Simpson has another strong year. I'd been thinking it would be a tough call between AVT and Simpson if each had similar to their 24' seasons this year. Now obviously can't pick up AVT's option or think of him as anything more than a low-cost, 1-year flier with good insurance behind him. Really sucks for AVT though. A really good player on the field whose had some bad luck.
I may be wrong, but I thought this year is AVT’s 5th option year, so next year he is a free agent…at this point, he’ll have to settle for a one or two year prove it type deal, whether with us or someone else. but again, I may be wrong on the timing
No you're right, that was my mistake. Can't believe he's already been here 5 years. Time flies. But yes, he's definitely in one-year prove-it deal territory. He'll have only played in 27 games between the 22-25' seasons due to injuries.
One year prove it deal or walk... move Tip to RG and Hope Meyers can be adequate (key word here). Draft a C and G next year
I think if you want to criticize the pick, you can do it on terms of trading up and using a mid first round pick on a guard, but the injury thing not sure you can criticize as I don’t think he had significant injury history at USC…hard to predict injuries when the player doesn’t have that history
If they had only listened to me on Day 3 screaming "Trey Smith OG from Tennessee!!!!!" https://forums.theganggreen.com/thr...y-3-rounds-4-thru-7.95707/page-6#post-4082952
Physically talented players are just too fragile for the game with constant injuries Bill Walton and Chad Pennington come to mind.
