Wilson and Pickens would be a fantastic duo with Moore but I can't see us double dipping that early with the amount of work that has to be done on defense. Wilson and London both are WR1's for me in this draft so we end up with either, I'm happy.
I'd be disappointed if JD stopped addressing WR after taking Wilson or London. We can't go into this season with Mims and Jeff Smith as our #5 and #6 WRs, not if the Jets are serious about ensuring that Zach develops. Wilson and Watson or Wilson and Pickens would be phenomenal. Defense can wait. The Jets need to draft 2 WRs and a TE, as well as OL depth. IMO at least 5 of the 9 picks should go to offense (2 WRs, RB, TE, and OL depth), and ideally it would be 6 of the 9 so that another OL depth player could be drafted. IMO taking an Edge, a S, NT, and LB along with getting 4 players back that missed pretty much the entire season (Lawson, Joyner, Nasirildeen and Sherwood), adding Whitehead, Reed, and Martin, the rest of the D having a year's experience in the system, Ulbrich and Saleh having a year's experience coaching these players, will be enough for our D this season and that should have the D playing at a much higher level. A lot of posters seemingly are forgetting the adjustments that were made to the D during the 2nd half of the season and late had the D playing at a higher level.
Great effort! Again, I disagree with how you drafted, but I appreciate your explanations and they're certainly logical, I'm just not thrilled about it. For example, London at #10 - I have very mixed feeling about him. He could be a great WR for us, but he could also bust. In your draft, I'd take Sauce and get my WR with the next pick or two depending on how the board fell, or I might take Lloyd there, although Saleh says he's happy with his LB crew, IDK if that's smoke or not. And I'm still not sold that Becton can be counted on so I would've taken someone who could possibly step in for him, but IDK who was available in your draft. Anyway. I wouldn't be upset if the actual draft turned out this way since you did cover most of the holes. Appreciate it.
I agree, 5 picks should be used on offense - everything from pick 69 till the end should be used on offense.
Nope, that's too little too late. We need to get two WRs early (in 1st & 2nd rounds or both in the 2nd). The other 3 offensive picks can and should be in the 4th/5th rounds.
LOL How am I obviously wrong? I appreciate the respect, and I respect you The Jets need to add a top notch WR. We're not getting one in the 3rd, 4th or 5th round. We may not get one in the 2nd round. There will be a run on WRs as there always is, and 6-7 WRs will go in the 1st round. I guess that means you're happy with Mims and Jeff Smith being the #5 and #6 WRs or some schlub WR being our depth. I'm not, and I doubt that any other Jets fans beside you would be either. I KNOW that JD, Saleh and MLF agree with me and not you, thank goodness.
I disagree that the Jets need to add a top WR more than they need to add a top EDGE, top LB, top CB, top RB etc etc. Every position sans QB could use some added depth or a quality starter. The Jets want to compete this year, or at least be exciting, as shown by the attempts with Ridley and Hill. Traditionally, WRs don’t produce in their 1st year so I’m not convinced a generic “1st rd qb” will produce this year. If the Jets think London is everything I want him to be and can produce immediately, he could definitely be the pick at #4 and I’d be good with that. But let’s say for a second, the Jets pass on a #1 wr and go D heavy with their 1st 4 picks, what are we left with? A solidified DL with Lawson-JFM-Q-Rookie A solidified/improved LB core with Last Years developmental rookie - Mosley - Rookie A backfield with Reed - Rookie - Whitehead Rookie To me, this looks like a damn good starting lineup across the board with good depth in the 2ndary and decent depth on the whole D leaving no needs that can’t be addressed next year. On the starting O, a 3rd WR is our only glaring need but do we need a WR 1 or a WR 3? Moore, Davis, Carter, and CJ are a lot of starters with the ability to catch the ball. We would be better off, IMO, with securing a lockdown D with our 1st 4 picks and adding depth on O with the the rest. If we trade down to 22 and they’re both available, I’d rather take Zion the Trayvon. We have too many unknowns at WR to add another unknown.
Our WR room needs upgrading and depth. Ensuring that Zach develops and the offense gels is one billion times more important than the d. You don't win with D and a mediocre offense in the NFL. Edge is equal to WR in importance, but neither CB, nor S, nor LB, nor DT are a fraction as important as WR. The analytics folks will tell you that, the common sense folks will tell you that, and the people that understand that the NFL is an offensive league will tell you that. There is no such thing as a "lockdown" D. That's an analytical error, and the house of cards which the rest of your premise is built upon collapses. With great QBs/offense, all one can hope to do is slow them down on D, and keep them off the field. The best way to do that is to have a great offense yourself and have long, sustained drives that consistently score points. The opposing offense can't score if they aren't on the field, and if they're behind, more than likely, they will abandon the run and start throwing every down and that gives our D an edge. Our pass rushers can tee off on the QB, and the DBs can come up with interceptions. You're entitled to your opinion, I'm just thankful that JD and Saleh don't share it.
1 of our top 4 will be WR for sure. same with edge. Likely a DT too. that leaves one of our top 4 open for BPA or even 35+69 for a 3rd 1st (will get us up to the early 20s) after that we do have some needs on offense. o-line depth, 2nd WR, maybe a TE, RB2. but D needs a LBer and safety too
Lockdown D isn’t an analytical argument, it’s a word choice. If you’re uncomfortable with that word choice, please substitute - solid D, strong D, potential for a top D etc etc. If you want to keep the opposing O off the field, it seems like you would want to run the ball more and use 12 pass sets more often. Neither of those need another WR to accomplish. The NFL is a passing league? Really, I’m shocked!! Next you’re going to tell me Miami just got a top flight WR? Say it isn’t so!!! When everyone else brings a gun to the party you should be afraid of the guy with a built proof vest-helmet-facemask and a knife. Neither of us know what JD will do in the draft, you claiming you do is just kinda sad.
Please feel free to take a look back at 1.0 and 2.0. Can't believe I called Whitehead! (was wayyyy off on the contract though!) Quick recap all of the re-signings and FA signings below: Re-signings: Braxton Berrios Will Parks Mike White Eddy Pineiro Joe Flacco Conor McDermott Lamarcus Joyner Nick Bawden Tevin Coleman Nathan Shepherd Free Agency: Laken Tomlinson, IOL (SF) CJ Uzomah, TE (CIN) Jordan Whitehead, S (TB) DJ Reed, CB (SEA) Tyler Conklin, TE (MIN) Jake Martin, EDGE (HOU) Now for a bit of speculation as I think we're about 95% of the way through our FA moves but I think there will be a few more smaller moves play out before the draft: Cuts: Ryan Griffin (3.2M) Free Agency: Tre'Quan Smith, WR (NO) Taylor Stallworth, DT (IND) Draft: (Utilizing TDN's Mock Draft Machine) 4th overall: Kayvon Thibodeaux EDGE, Oregon. Same pick as 2.0, except this time around this pick looks to be fairly likely for us. Top 3 went, Hutchinson-Hamilton-Neal, for those that are curious. I thought about taking a trade back with the Falcons, which seems like a plausible scenario now with the Matt Ryan trade but having the option of taking KT was too much to pass up on. 10th overall: Drake London, WR USC. This one was a very difficult decision for me. Garrett Wilson just went 8th to the Falcons so he was off the board but the Seahawks took Malik Willis as QB1 at 9 which pushed Sauce Gardner to 10th. Trying to decide between London and Gardner was like trying to decide between pizza and tacos....both are great but it just depends on what you want the most. For me, it had to be WR with how we've handled the offseason. It seems like JD wants to draft a young WR that can grow with Zach over the next few years. 35th overall: Jaquan Brisker S, Penn State. Even with the addition of Whitehead and re-signing Joyner, I think our S group needs some more bodies. Jaquan Brisker is arguably the best S prospect in this class after Kyle Hamilton. He's played in a variety of roles on the Nittany Lions D which has to be appealing to JD and Saleh who value versatility. 38th overall: DeMarvin Leal IDL, Texas A&M. A former 1st round lock, Leal has seen his stock dip quite a bit in the lead-up to the 2022 draft but don't let that fool you, Leal would be a fantastic fit in our 4-3. He will need to bulk up some and get closer to that 300lbs range (weighed in at 283 at the combine) to unlock his full potential IMO but even with where he's at, he'd contribute immediately and would give Saleh the DL rotation he's coveted since he took the job. 69th overall: Dylan Parham IOL, Memphis. A former LB/TE in HS, Parham is an excellent athlete who has since made the transition to IOL and best projects as a C in the NFL. Similar to Leal, he will need to bulk up some and learn to play at that new weight to fully reach his potential but he would be a great player to take here and learn behind McGovern for a year before finally taking over the position in 2023. 111th overall: Cam Taylor-Britt CB, Nebraska. At 6'0" 205lbs, Taylor-Britt has the necessary size to be a developmental outside corner in Saleh's system. He seems to be adequate in both man and zone and has decent ball skills (6 INTS at Nebraska) and is also a very good tackler. Seems like the perfect fit for Saleh. 117th overall: Jelani Woods TE, Virginia. A guy who has seen is stock rise quite a bit as of late, Woods is very much a developmental prospect at TE, but who better to take a mid-late round flyer on than a guy who stands at 6'7" 253lbs with elite athleticism (as evidenced by his eye-popping 9.97 RAS score)? While TE might not be quite as much of a need with Uzomah and Conklin on board, those guys are not long-term solutions so JD drafts Woods with the understanding that he'll serve as TE3 as a rookie but look to start eating into someone's reps as early as next year. 146th overall: Max Mitchell, OT Louisiana. JD takes a shot on an athletic OT with good lateral movement and agility. He'll need to add some upper body strength to compete at the next level but the tools are there. 163rd overall: Romeo Doubs WR, Nevada. Doubs put on a show at the Senior Bowl so I'm not 100% sure he'll make it this far but if so, he's a great addition to the WR room. Offense: QB: -2 Zach Wilson -19 Joe Flacco -5 Mike White Yes I double checked. Its cool can't wait till draft day RB: -32 Michael Carter -23 Tevin Coleman -25 Ty Johnson -35 Austin Walter -22 La'Mical Perine FB: -48 Nick Bawden TE: -## CJ Uzomah (87) -## Tyler Conklin (83) -## Jelani Woods (0) -85 Trevon Wesco -48 Kenny Yeboah -## Lawrence Cager -## Brandon Dillon WR:
You're talking two very different things here. I agree that getting a top notch WR will definitely require an early pick. But as for the replacing/upgrading from Mims and Smith, while I am fine with doubling up at WR in the first 3 rounds, such an investment is not necessary in order to upgrade on Mims and Smith, especially with the way TE has been significantly upgraded.
I disagree. Upgrading the TEs has zero to do with WR depth if Moore and Davis get injured again. If we have any hopes of getting anything out of those two WRs this upcoming season, than more than likely we need to double up in the first 2-3 rounds. I seriously doubt a 4th or 5th round WR would be any better than Mims or Jeff Smith or be able to contribute anything this season.
It does matter because it means you have more viable pass catchers, you can better adjust for when injuries do hit. Being a more 12 personnel team when injuries hit was not viable because they did not have one functional receiving TE, let alone two. I have no problem drafting a second receiver in round 3 if it's a guy, who can make a legitimate impact/be a 2023 starter. Drafting a second receiver that early because "we have to do better than Jeff Smith" with all of the other holes on this roster is short-sighted.
We'll just have to agree to disagree. Yes, having solid TEs will help, but the WR corps still is in need of serious upgrading. Ensuring that Zach develops and the offense gels is the #1 priority. Nothing else matters in comparison. If need be, everything else can wait. Fortunately it won't have to be everything, else just one other position. We're not going to be able to fill all of our holes anyway. We can not trot out the likes of Mims, Smith, Black, Montgomery at WR again this season or ever again.
Yeah, Ty JOHNSON is still a member of this team through this upcoming season (2022). You said Ty Montgomery in your original post which is what had me confused.
