I don't understand this. Saleh had so many hallmarks of a bad coach. We were among the most penalized teams in the league during his tenure and got blown out constantly. We didn't have an above average point differential once during Saleh's tenure. I agree that Glenn looks like a bad coach though.
Saleh was bad and the record reflects that…however, he fielded pretty good defenses for the most part, as you would expect a DC to do Glenn has been much much worse…the record is worse of course, but also its not a good look that his side of the ball has been atrocious, and with many of the same core guys on that side of the ball, so he’s worse than Saleh as he can’t even field a good D…on O, the problems mostly start with Fields, but Glenn HAS to own that as he was his handpicked guy…sure I get the options weren’t much, but shit he could have signed Jameis Winston for 25% of the cost…of course Winston sucks too, but Fields is worse
Actually, coaches in a tank always get fired. Always. The most common reason is that you started taking because you sucked in the early part of the season, and why do you want to keep the coach who sucked in the early part of the season?
The '25 Patriots? The beneficiary of an experienced HC. Not sure how long it took the Lions or the Colts. All of them sucked until they hired the HC they needed to make things work. We have no idea what we have in Glenn yet, but in lieu of that we're laying a solid foundation for once. Once Glenn's body of work has a few more chapters in it, perhaps then we can judge him fairly. Glenn is here for the foreseeable future so might as well hope for the best. Mougey is a better GM than Douglas so far and that's what we have to count on for a better future. Given enough time, this CS/GM combo just might be the one that pulls off the turnaround.
I pretty much agree with everything you mentioned, I like Moug a lot and even Engstrand but I saw enough of Glenn 4 weeks in. He made egregious errors week in and week out which can happen with a rookie coach (I've never seen it happen but sure, maybe) but it's how he would blindly defend it in the pressers when anyone with eyes knew he was wrong. He would then admit during the week it was wrong but then do the exact same thing the next week. I deal with hundreds of different people a year for work, I am a pretty good judge of character imo but also recognize my own biases. Now that doesn't mean I am guaranteed to be right but I have worked around and with people like Glenn, I feel like I can almost speak his pressers verbatim before he does. He's not a good coach, hell I would avoid him like the plague if I had to work with him. He's a cheerleader and a damn good one at that but that's it. He has no feel for the flow of the game, preparation seems almost non existent (some of those situational things should have been decided before the game) and he just seems way over his head but wants to gaslight us into thinking otherwise when anyone with eyes can see right through it. He's argumentative with reporters even when he's wrong which is often. I hope he is OK and it can work if we bring in some coaches to help him. He needs a clock specialist, situational coach and for God's sake a PR specialist. If we can relegate him to cheerleader and have coaches coach he will be fine but he won't let that happen so he will dig his own grave.
Everything you said is true. Everything you said also falls under the OJT folder too. Being HC isn't really a plug and play job for the untrained. That's on Woody but sadly, that's also the rules we have to live with so... Glenn will need time to learn how to be the CEO HC. I have more faith in Engstrand than I do in Wilks and I can see Wilks being replaced next year if this defense doesn't tighten up. Ulbrich also sucked his first year here but by year 2, the unit started to jell. If we're lucky, that happens with Wilks. Engstrand's learning curce seems a lot flatter than Glenn's. Means the offense will come along quicker IF Tanner maintains an aggressive role. He can't let Fields' limitations also limit the playbook. Either Fields can operate the system or Fields gets replaced. If by next year Glenn still looks lost, lets have this conversation. I think the light bulb comes on by the end of the season but I'm evidently the optimist around these parts.
I'll definitely give him this season even though I will have to bite my tongue and try to be objective. I really would be shocked if it gets better, tiger can't change his stripes but since we don't have a choice we can reserve judgement. If it doesn't get better by January? How could we possibly bring him back, even Moug at some point might step in and be like shit, we have something here but this coach is an idiot lol.
If Mougey keeps on making moves like this year, his stay with the Jets will be far longer than Glenn's. Although its still up in the air about our HC, we're seeing a GM being developed and showing a certain shrewdness that was lacking in all of our prior GM's going back to Tannenbaum.
Next year is the beginnings of the Mougey team. This year is the purge. There will be more casualties by the beginning of next season. There will be a new attitude and vibe within the team because all of the old guard will be gone. If they’re not pleased with Glenn, that’s the time to move on. I don’t think you start out a young team with a coach you’re unsure of. Young players need stability and leadership, we have a perfect example in NE. Can you imagine if they decided to let Mayo stay as coach hoping he’d continue to develop? They brought in a guy who knows how to coach and lead a team and instantly they turned things around. Coaching matters greatly. There are coaches that would be salivating for the opportunity to lead a young team with 5 1st round picks coming up the next 2 years. I have no doubt that McCarthy or Gruden would welcome the opportunity to work with Mougey to build this upcoming team.
This is exactly it, unless they are all in on Glenn (which I have no idea how anyone could be) then they need to find someone else to steer this ship. 5 1's can be franchise altering but only if you have the right pieces at GM and HC, the NE example while maybe an outlier is exactly it. I don't think they have any where near the same success with the exact same setup if they kept Mayo. Bring in a general, an experienced coach that can bring some stability to this shit show.
That's all well and good but..the reality is that Woody only hires newbies. He's the owner and he's not changing. We have to deal with "what is", not what we want it to be. It comes with the territory. Baked into the cake. Glenn is the HC of the NYJ's and he has to learn how to coach winning football. It's not a job for newbies but that's what the situation is.
Agree 100% Perfect time to admit your mistake and do something different I’m not on the Gruden train, but I would be fine with McCarthy and also fine with bringing in a younger guy like Kingsbury….young offensive guy with HC experience This team has SO much stink on it, but I fully agree…give a new coach 5 first round picks in his first two years and that gives him the chance to build the team he wants I just have no faith in a guy like Glenn being able to develop a QB
Everyone is right that we should replace Glenn with a better coach but it's just not going to happen. Woody is always, always a year too late firing guys. We don't have a single example of him anticipating a shitshow and getting ahead of it before it happens. I guess there's a first time for everything but I'd be utterly shocked if we fire Glenn after this year.
Freakin 8 games man. 8 games. No shit he hasn't been perfect, or even good, but to be this wound up and outraged and demanding change after 8 games is just begging to be miserable.
People say this every single time and every single time the people "overreacting" end up being proven right over time. We have a ton of evidence that the really good coaches in the league turn teams around basically immediately.
Right like Kyle Shanahan who was 10-22 in his first two seasons and went winless the first 9 weeks of his career. Or Dan Campbell who was 3-13-1 his first year and went winless the first 12 weeks of his career. Or Dave Canales who went 5-12 his first season with the 30th ranked O and 32nd ranked D Those are more outliers than commonplace but all of them were labeled one and done by plenty of people in their first. year. Canales was on the hot seat halfway through last year and Bryce young looked like garbage. Now they're 5-4 and Young is a legit starting caliber NFL QB. And all of those guys were handed QBs by the way. Glenn has Fields who was a handpicked stopgap. Bad choice obviously, but the goal (despite coach speak) was not to be world beaters this year. He's done plenty wrong, not gonna find me arguing that.
I’ll give you two very recent examples Denver - fired Nathaniel Hackett DURING his first season, hired a proven HC and bam…playoffs NE - fired Mayo after one lousy year, hired a proven HC and bam…competing for division lead This isn’t rocket science…hiring first time DC’s as HC’s in an offensive league has not worked for us. Ever (ok, maybe you can say Rex worked out over a decade ago I guess) I’m not ready to crown Mougey just yet…as I think it’s not hard to “tear down” really (though kudo’s for getting great value in return), but it’s MUCH harder to “rebuild”. JD was good at the tear down also…we were all singing his praises for getting two first rounders for Adams…but he absolutely failed at the rebuild part. So yah, so far, I’m good with what Mougey has done…his first draft was solid…not spectacular maybe in that we don’t have any rookie of the year candidates, but it addressed huge needs on OL and TE with good players, and the jury is still out on the CB and WR, so we’ll have to wait and see. The returns on AG however have been nothing but utter disaster through half a season. And sure, it’s still early, but as a DC his defense has sucked, as an in game decision maker he’s been more bad than good, and as a player leader/motivator it’s hard to say he’s been good…lots of sloppy play, too much lack of urgency, etc. And I’m not absolving him (or Mougey for that matter) of the decision to go with Fields…yes AG has been saddled with horrific QB play, but that’s HIS choice of guy, he made his bed, now he has to sleep in it. Right now, I feel better about our GM than I do our HC. And we have a golden opportunity to attract a good HC candidate which for us has never been a given…this has not been a destination that many coaches with legit options would consider. But now, with FIVE first rounders in the next two drafts, that’s gotta be a HUGE attraction. Sure, you have to work with Woody and that will always be an anchor for us, but if ever there was a time where we could legitimately compete for a top tier coach, this has to be it. But of course, Woody is a fucking moron and will NEVER see the big picture ever. I just pointed out two recent teams that realized they had the wrong HC, and instead of wasting two to three years to see it, they made the bold move, went with a proven winner, and it paid literally IMMEDIATE dividends. McCarthy is still out there…Super Bowl winner, offensive guy, took the Cowboys to the playoffs…he would be a good choice to come in here, pick his QB and go. I also would love to see us try and woo Kliff Kingsbury away from Washington…we have the picks for him to be able to go get his QB and go. But we have Woody…so we will sit pat and get super excited if AG can win like 5 games next year (see? We’re on the right path!), and then be back looking for a coach after 3 years.
And all three of those guys are offensive coaches…we are stuck with a defensive guy who has never fielded a top defense and certainly is far from it so far here. I get that half a season is way too short a time, but if we end up this year the same way, with no improvement then fuck it, I say let’s make a change.
Context matters here. "Never fielded a top defense" is only slightly accurate. 2021 - 31st in points, 29th in yards 2022 - 28th in points, 32nd in yards 2023 - 23rd in points, 19th in yards 2024 - 7th in points, 20th in yards Is that blowing anyone away? Obviously not. But there's consistent improvement and that 2024 season involved losing multiple starters. I know there's a thought that the defense is better without Glenn this year but by the numbers they are 13th in points and 8th in yards (obviously a big improvement). That defense also got back 5 starters that were on IR last year including one of the best pass rushers in the game. And to cut it off at the pass, I'm NOT saying Glenn is going to work out and we have nothing to worry about. Never once said that. I'm saying that demanding someone is fired after week 8 is a fool's errand.
