I'm OK with him. It would be nice to be set at run protection and pass protection with Sewell in tandem with Becton. I'm not sure when we fix the QB issue though? Do we just need an average QB behind that line?
This would be ideal IMO NFL 2021 Draft: Jets’ big decision at No. 2; Eagles eye DeVonta Smith or Ja’Marr Chase; Justin Fields sliding | Full 1st-round mock projection - nj.com
I don't think I've heard a compelling solution for having to pay either Becton/Sewell less money to play at RT. I also haven't heard a compelling argument for essentially taking a RT at #2 overall, something that is generally considered very poor value. Not saying Sewell is a bad player but taking him at #2 is a nonstarter for me. If we don't like a QB at #2 I think the obvious move is to trade down.
How is it selecting a RT at 2nd overall??? He is and would be the Jets LT and Becton would be the RT. 100% sure of that. How are talking about money 4 years from now? The compeling argument? How about a generational and possibly the best player at his position at 2nd overall? What more compelling argument you need? Also he would improve the run/offensive game massively! What more can we ask? Seriously. I am fed up with the team always rushing a proper squad building by using premium top draft capital to draft bad QB or defensive rusher that bust. We have been circling around for 3 decades can we build a proper balanced team for once. The last semi competitive Jets team at a great offensive line and running game . Doesn't that could be somehow not just coincidence? Everyteam in the playoff have great running and passing game! But somehow we only look at the QB like the next saviour and never look at their offensive line which are even more impressive and their rushing game.
If that's the case then we selected a RT at #11 in Becton, still bad value. You can't just discount the money thing. It's going to be an issue in 4 years, guaranteed. You can't just say we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. Would you take 25% less money at RT after you've already proven you can be a good LT? What do you tell Becton? He's going to be asking for a trade if we do that. You'd better hope we win a Super Bowl in the next 4 years because after that he's gone.
There is something called a trade. You know that if you have 2 pro bowl caliber offensive tackles that your team is doing amazing well and you will easily find a taker for Becton for a significant return if that happen. Just look at the Dolphins with Tunsil. It is 100% better situation than to swing and a miss again on bad QB and circle again in 3 years. We could barely get a 3rd rounder for Sam Darnold now and we used so much draft capital for him. Although unsexy it would have been smarter to not make the trade up and draft the not sexy pick of Quentin Nelson and improve our o-line but we did and we are now worse than we were 3 years ago. Building an elite fondation and offensive line should be the #1 priority everything will improve if that happen.
I'd be open to taking Sewell at #2 and looking to trade Becton. He got chipped up a few times last season but could/should net us a high Rd1 pick+ maybe even the Cincy slot for a stab at QB or WR.
I think the point would be to trade one of them down the road after getting cheap dominant play out of them for a few years.
Agree + there are options. Pay 1, pay both, trade 1... there are teams paying their Qb $40m+/year... I don’t see that being the case with the Jets any time soon. I think when people diss Sewell at #2... they are tired of the Jets having a lack of playmakers and solid Qb play vs actually hating the idea of Sewell. IMO the only way you can take a Qb or WR is if they are a freak. Lawrence, Sewell, Parsons, Pitts are the only guys in the top 10 who fit this bill...
I can see the 'down the road' approach but on travelling that road one of them will be the 'lesser' right tackle which either means Sewell having to make the switch after a couple of seasons working on his right-side technique or Becton having decreased trade value from not having played in the 'crucial' position in years. Becton is still young, cost controlled for many years and has justified his round 1 status. If we had to trade him right now - what would his value be?
Yeah a stud LT is "impossible" to acquire other than in the draft. If the Jets were ever fortunate enough to be in such a position 3 or 4 years from now the suitors would be lining up with fantastic offers. From my perspective Sewell should be the Jets draft pick UNLESS they get some fantastic offer to trade down. Fantastic mini-haul should probably be the #1 hope, Sewell should be the happy backup plan. And probably end up better than the mini-haul anyway in the long run if he's even 80% as good as some of the reports I'm reading about him. This guy is just a fantastic football player and as others have noted in other threads probably the least likely in the entire draft to bust which doesn't hurt either.
